I admit, first time I read that headline I was like, "WHAT? Israel adding Asbestos to their bombs now? How sinister. What's next - radon?" It took a minute to get up to speed.

[–] beefbot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 70 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Same. Per the article, the structures being destroyed have asbestos in them from when they were built; this is the cause of it being released

Edit: I’ve never before seen a comment like the reply to mine here below that was so clearly made by an AI bot

Asbestos is a massive curse that the world should never have been put into their buildings. There are tons of buildings all over the world that still have asbestos in them.

[–] rigatti@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

It has great material properties aside from, you know, destroying people's lungs. So I can understand why the world was eager to use it before understanding the risks.

[–] Almrond@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The ancient Romans made it a point to not buy slaves from the asbestos mines due to their poor health, it has been known for far too long that asbestos is harmful. It also happens to be insanely useful.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

The ancient Romans used asbestos?

Edit: damn, it has been used since forever...

I am aware of its incredible fireproofing ability. Also it is one of the few, if only, minerals that can be woven into fabric.

[–] Ultraviolet@lemmy.world 33 points 3 weeks ago

I wouldn't have put it past them.

[–] poo@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Me too - wouldn't put it past them, Israel is disgusting enough to sink to that level.

[–] Assman@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean.. the effect is the same. The buildings didn't explode themselves.

[–] bazus1@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Well, my second thought was, "that's pretty short-sighted if you're gonna Zionist all over the destroyed area.. why would you introduce a carcinogen when..." and by then it clicked. The zionists don't want carcinogens either, but explosively spreading existing asbestos is the price they're willing to pay for genocide.

[–] SassyRamen@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah the problem is the building material used. The headline had me confused as fuck too.

[–] index@sh.itjust.works 55 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This is the sort of collateral damage nobody talks about. Even for these cheering at the bombing of terrorists, you still have to take into account the consequences of your actions, bombing everything to dust has a price.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 41 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The people claiming to cheer at bombing terrorists cheer at murdering brown people. The entire "war on terror" narrative has been a veil and continues to be a veil for white supremacists to enjoy murdering brown people.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Israel also was heavily backing the war in Iraq. While they weren't the sole or even main factor behind it, the resulting nearly 1 million Iraqi deaths the complete destruction of the country, and the subsequent Syrian Civil War (which was a direct consequence of the Iraq war) really destabilized the region big time.

Israel wants their neighbors to be as unstable as possible because stable and prosperous Arab nations piss them off.

Jordan is practically their ally yet they speak of Jordanians like they are foaming at the mouth to kill israelis when every Jordanian/Israeli skirmish was provoked very blatantly by Israel.

I simply cannot believe just how monstrous a people can be. They are entirely on par with the Nazis. In some cases even worse.

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemy.lol 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This may surprise you, but "white supremacists" 🙄 Aren't all that fond of the jews, regardless of their skin tone.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

Well, being antisemitic and supporting Israel can go hand in hand. Be it because they share the idea of ethnically homogenous nations, because they want to send the Jews to live somewhere else, or because they are happy for Israel to murder Arabs for them.

Some of the greatest supporters of Zionism were antisemites, like Lord Balfur.

Every last one of those IDF crooks involved in this needs to be hanged for this crime.

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Dont be so violent

They would be better put to use doing manual labor rebuilding Gaza and Beirut after conviction

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 6 points 3 weeks ago

OK, hang the higher ups, make the grunts do the grunt work.

[–] Randelung@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Don't give them the opportunity to sabotage.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 41 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Don't worry, they'll fix that by bombing them directly, fixing that pesky living habit they have, so they don't have to worry about dying of cancer. It's really a service when you think about it /s

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 16 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, it's probably way down the list of shit they have to worry about right now. There's bombing, snipers, starvation, lack of potable water and polio that will kill you way before the asbestos gets you.

[–] idunnololz@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Ohhh I see. Israel is just helping Gaza demolish their old and aging builds so they can build newer, better ones! /s

[–] shroomato@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Why the half measures? The should just nuke them outright so that all that asbestos becomes safe by turning into glass.

[–] Doorbook@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I think they cannot due to close approximately with their own cities. Otherwise they would have done it way back.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

It's okay, I hear that asbestos got a bad rap and the movement against it was run by the mob.

https://www.motherjones.com/2020-elections/2020/06/the-trump-files-asbestos-mob-conspiracy/

But it's "100 percent safe, once applied."

[–] WhatYouNeed@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

New campaign slogan:

Trump for cancer 2024

[–] nutsack@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I apply it directly to my nuts constantly

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 13 points 3 weeks ago

How nice of Israel to help dismantle all those dangerous old asbestos filled buildings for them.

[–] Gemini24601@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Is there any justification for this? Is it still about Hamas now?

[–] LordCrom@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Was it ever just about Hamas? Or could the desire to get that waterfront land and remove more of those "people" be at the heart of it all
