There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

I write political economic reports as a hobby just a neutral slightly cynical take on things. The challenge is finding a platform that doesn’t collect data while also being active and having users interested in these topics. (Mainstream social media is out of the question. No) Platforms i've tried : lemmy, mastodon, substuck, writefreely

I do not want this to be a political debate nor an opportunity to post recent headlines. However, in my opinion, this administration seems to be taking actions which history suggests may lead towards a near or total economic collapse. Whether you agree with this or not is irrelevant.

This post’s question is: If one were to have a concern that they’d no longer be able to afford common household goods or that mainstream (S&P, Nasdaq) financial investments were no longer sound, what can one do to prepare for “the worst”? What actions could someone take today to minimize economic hardship in the future?

I would also like thoughtful insight from older adults to offer younger adults about how they should be better preparing themselves for an uncertain future, outside of current events or place of residence.

Got Ollama set up with an 8GB AMD graphics card at my disposal. Any recommendations for the most unhinged model I can run on this? i.e. I can ask it how to annoy my neighbors and it won't go on a rant about morals or its supposed purpose as an LLM?

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/25256388

Unfortunately lemoa has stopped development and its repo is now archived since a year now. Current install on AUR (Arch, Artix, ...) doesn't even render...

But I like gnu+linux native clients, in particular gtk ones. On the apps recommendations I see no real gnu+linux native client similar to what lemoa was. Are you aware of any fork, or any similar client, hopefully low on resources?

Thanks !

I think its unnecessarily convoluted, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) are morons and need to get a life.

Including their cousins like the MPA and RIAA.

I am currently doing research around this topic for my University work and have created a google form for people to respond, but I need to make sure it is clean and respects everyone's privacy.

You can request my signal group through direct messages if you would like to fill it out once it releases, I have other plans to have a talk as a (focus) group.

What are your thoughts on Generative Machine Learning models? Do you like them? Why? What future do you see for this technology?

What about non-generative uses for these neural networks? Do you know of any field that could use such pattern recognition technology?

I want to get a feel for what are the general thoughts of Lemmy Users on this technology.

Greetings!

A friend of mine wants to be more secure and private in light of recent events in the USA.

They originally told me they were going to use telegram, in which I explained how Telegram is considered compromised, and Signal is far more secure to use.

But they want more detailed explanations then what I provided verbally. Please help me explain things better to them! ✨

I am going to forward this thread to them, so they can see all your responses! And if you can, please cite!

Thank you! ✨

The US blocked high power graphics cards to specific countries, and then got all shaken up when their money moat was pole-vaulted by an embargo'd country wielding jank cards.

Why is this a big deal, exactly?

Who benefits if the US has the best AI, and who benefits if it's China?

Is this like the Space Race, where it's just an effort to spit on each other, but ultimately no one really loses, and cool shit gets made?

What does AI "supremacy" mean?

Artificial Superintelligence, AI systems that are more intelligent than humans across every domain, may or may not be coming soon

What could we do to prepare now for a future where it has arrived?

I have been considering:

  • starting local community groups
  • updating my investment strategies to be more resilient to market disruption
  • diversifying personal income streams
  • staying up to date with the latest news and learn to better use the latest tools/technology
  • upgrading personal skills towards the harder to replace industries

It's a bit difficult to imagine a truly "safe" way of life. Barring UBI and more progressive taxes it seems like it may be quite challenging for the average person to exist comfortably.

Some industries that are already impacted at the level of technology we already have

  • programming
  • ui design
  • creative writing
  • technical writing
  • customer support
  • graphic art
  • data analysis

I think almost every other industry is at risk of significant disruption. A capitalism based society will always stray toward the cheapest option, "if AI can take customer support calls for $1/day and customer satisfaction doesn't dip, why would I pay a person $150/day?"

I want to hear you reasons, why do you think that.

. . . just "Lemmy?" "Lem?" Something else entirely?

Another possibility could be "Stan" or "Stanislaw" (because of Stanisław Lem).

Lemmy of Motörhead's real name is "Ian Fraser Kilmister," so our guy could also be named "Ian" or "Kilmister;" Fraser probably not being a great choice for obvious reasons.

(Have I spent way too much time thinking about this? Is it way past time for me to stop drinking coffee and go to bed? You bet! ☕🤪)

I'm interested in leftist opinions of employee-owned companies. If that's still too broad, could you give some examples of employees buying their employer out? Or are there other ways, like with a union?

Also, what's up with King Arthur's and Bob's Red Mill?

For me it would be a full copy of wikipedia, an offline copy of some maps of where I live, some linux ISO's, and a lot of entertainment media.

I love the thought of people thinking of me obsessively and wanting to be just like me.

It appears to work fine (it contains my home partition for my main machine I daily drive) and I haven't noticed signs of failure. Not noticeably slow either. I used to boot Windows off of it once upon a time which was incredibly slow to start up, but I haven't noticed slowness since using it for my home partition for my personal files.

Articles online seem to suggest the life expectancy for an HDD is 5–7 years. Should I be worried? How do I know when to get a new drive?

The modern relationship between Russia and China is often portrayed as a burgeoning partnership, one driven by shared strategic interests in countering Western dominance. However, beneath the surface lies a more complex and fragile relationship, one that is shaped by historical tensions, diverging economic trajectories, mutual opportunism, and the influence of other key global actors.

  1. Russia and China have shared an uneasy relationship. Despite ideological alignment during parts of the Cold War, the Sino-Soviet split in the 1960s underscored the deep mistrust between the two powers. Territorial disputes, ideological divergences, and competing ambitions in Asia have left scars that persist today, even as both nations publicly present a united front against perceived Western hegemony.

Implications: – Historical mistrust suggests potential fault lines that could be exploited to weaken the partnership. – Unresolved border issues could resurface, requiring close monitoring of regional military movements.

  1. Russia’s pivot to China for energy exports has grown markedly since the imposition of Western sanctions in 2014 and their intensification following the Ukraine conflict. Projects like the Power of Siberia pipeline highlight this dependency. However, China’s diversification of energy sources, including investments in renewables and partnerships with Middle Eastern countries, limits its reliance on Russian energy. In 2023, bilateral trade between the two nations reached $190 billion, with China exporting high-tech goods to Russia while importing raw materials such as oil, gas, and timber. This dependency underscores an unequal partnership where China holds the leverage.

Projections: – By 2030, China is expected to reduce its reliance on Russian energy by 25%, as renewable projects and Gulf partnerships mature. – Russia’s GDP, already constrained by sanctions, is projected to grow only 1% annually, compared to China's 4-5%.

  1. China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) encroaches on Central Asia, a region Russia considers its sphere of influence. Similarly, China’s growing ties with Eastern European and Arctic nations challenge Russia’s geopolitical ambitions. Despite their growing economic ties, there is a clear power imbalance. Russia remains a resource-driven economy, heavily reliant on energy exports, whereas China has become the world's manufacturing hub and a leader in technological innovation. This discrepancy often leaves Russia at a disadvantage in negotiations, as China can leverage its economic size and diversification to dictate terms more readily than Russia can.

Recommendations: – Strengthen alliances with Central Asian nations (e.g., Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan) to counter China’s growing influence in the region. – Expand energy partnerships with Gulf states to further reduce China’s reliance on Russian resources. – Central Asia may become a flashpoint if Russia feels cornered by China’s expanding influence. – Arctic militarization could accelerate as both nations vie for dominance.

  1. The trajectory of the Russia-China relationship is heavily influenced by the actions and alignments of other nations. India’s historical ties with Russia, primarily in defense procurement, provide Moscow with a counterbalance to China. However, India’s rivalry with China over border disputes and its alignment with the U.S. through the Quad alliance complicate this dynamic.

Insights: – India's growing economy (expected GDP growth of 6% annually) could present Russia with alternative trade and investment opportunities. – India’s procurement of Russian weaponry keeps Moscow relevant in global defense markets, but U.S.-India ties could dilute this influence.

  1. China’s deepening ties with Saudi Arabia and the UAE position it as a key energy player in the Middle East, potentially sidelining Russia.

Insights: – Encouraging Gulf nations to diversify their energy exports further weakens Russia’s leverage over China. – Military Insight: Any instability in the Middle East could force China and Russia to reassess their global strategies, potentially leading to discord.

  1. The EU’s sanctions on Russia and cautious engagement with China make it a critical player.

Insights: – Europe’s focus on renewable energy and reduced reliance on Russian gas will shift global energy markets, affecting the Russia-China dynamic. – Strengthening EU-China trade relations could incentivize Beijing to distance itself from Moscow.

  1. While both Russia and China oppose U.S. dominance, their strategies diverge significantly.

Insights: – The U.S. pivot to the Indo-Pacific, coupled with NATO’s expansion, creates pressure points for both nations, but particularly for Russia. –The U.S. can exploit this divergence by engaging China economically while isolating Russia militarily.

Brief: Economic Independence: China’s diversification of energy sources and global trade partnerships limits its reliance on Russia. Technological Disparities: China’s advancements in AI, manufacturing, and green energy technologies further widen the gap between the two nations. Regional Rivalries: Central Asia and the Arctic are becoming contested zones, testing the limits of their partnership. Global Alliances: China’s need to maintain strong ties with Europe and the U.S. conflicts with Russia’s adversarial approach to the West.

It's hard to characterize in a single sentence, so I'll just break it down into its constituent parts.

The Beep

When the laundry cycle finishes it does the following:

  • It beeps super loudly for 5 seconds
  • If you don't run to switch it off, it will wait 30 more seconds and then continue to beep super loudly for 5 seconds
  • If you switch it off whilst it's beeping, it will continue to finish its beeping
  • There is no volume setting nor any way to switch this off.

The Door

When it's finished. It does not release. That beeping sound from earlier to tell you to come get your laundry? No no no, that was just the "come and watch me drain" alarm.

  • Switching it off has no effect on the door release.
  • It releases whenever it wants. It could be 5 minutes, it could be 20.
  • When it does release, all you will get is a sound, so you better be around to hear it.
  • If you miss this sound, it will lock itself again 10-15 minutes later and rotate your clothes.
  • It will then repeat the release process.

HELP ME. HE-ELP ME.

I'm trying to build up my feed using rss, but some sites just don't have it or doesn't let me filter through it as thoroughly as I want to.

I found this website, rss.app, that seems to be the solution to these problems, but I never really heard of this site before. Is there anything I should know about it?

I'm asking because the site requires you to make an account there to use it which asks for your name and email address and I don't want some random company spamming my email.

Hi Lemmy,

Apologies if this is a dumb question.

I have a trans person that I supervise and I know he is having a hard time after Trump's only two genders executive order.

Is there anything I can do to make sure that he feels supported at work?

I have regular check-in meetings with my staff so I was hoping to see how he was doing, but don't want to force him into an uncomfortable discussion.

Note: His performance is still excellent at his job so this isn't a "coaching conversation" or anything like that
