Hello everyone! Thank you for being here, and thanks to every one of our members for supporting us.

It's only been 22 days since this community started, and we never stopped gaining momentum ever since! The friendly and sincere atmosphere you've all managed to create so quickly here, that's what originally made the internet a great place. You've all visited us from many different corners of the internet, and we've always stayed willing to put in time and effort as required. You swayed toxicity away and established attitudes & we put it into writing to define our rules and approach. We love working with you, as we should :) I hope you feel welcome here.

This week, we didn't change a lot of things. We had to replace two inactive moderators and add @Rooki & @Thekingoflorda to our team. They've been absolutely amazing and Rooki might just come with a gift for us soon ;)

We also added a new rule:

9-Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

The previous Rule 9 is now number 10, so number 10 is not a new rule haha. That about sums up the past week. Oh, and we also banned two(3?) trolls. We try not to ban unless we absolutely have to. You can see them along with their deleted content on our mod log.

What change would you like to see in this community? Are you happy with the rules & management? Please feel free to let us know any suggestions & questions you may have in the comments.

I've been flossing usually twice a day, sometimes only once a day, pretty strictly for the past 2 weeks or so. mostly because my grandma bullied me lol. However it still hurts? when does it usually go away?

Someone told me Thoth was a messenger god but I and everyone else are too dumb to understand what his message was.

I'm asking about this section of U.S. Code specifically:

I'm watching both of these shows in their entirety and I don't know why they've historically gotten so much backlash. One reviewer called TBL "a dumpster fire of a TV show" and others seem to think M6L is downright abusive. However, I can't find anything particularly bad in either.

Although it's true that in TBL the contestants are losing an egregious amount of weight each week, it's likely (actually almost certain) that most of this is water weight and it would have been more dangerous to instead not lose the weight. The intense exercise scenes seem pretty typical for anybody who's serious about athletics. Finally, the famous "damaged metabolism" study that shut down TBL turned out to be debunked due to "damaged metabolism" being a boring, normal adaptation under high physical activity.

And although there are tons of bare naked shower scenes in M6L, everyone knew that going in and they agreed anyway. Some also complain how the stars don't receive enough support for things like therapy and other cost centers. I would say that would actually have been a great thing to add, but it would be impractical at scale and have a high chance of bankrupting the production with how much healthcare costs, resulting in a net loss of benefit for those who need the surgery.

So, what's your viewpoint here?

Staff and guests? Will they all have to vacate with no notice if the property gets seized on Monday 3/25/24?

I feel like with rampant bot/AI posting the traffic into social media sites are being spoofed. And companies know this and allow it to happen because it will inflate the ad value and then the stock value. Is this true to an extent or is this taken into account?

I saw a map of undersea internet cables the other day and it's crazy how many branches there are. It got me wondering - if I'm (based in the UK) playing an online game from someone in Japan for example, how is the route worked out? Does my ISP know that to get to place X, the data has to be routed via cable 1, cable 2 etc. but to get to place Z it needs to go via cable 3, 4?

For example, if you said that someone had been fooled by something, would they take offense and think you're calling them a fool or foolish?

What if you say someone's been "played for a fool"?

Trying to wrap my head around the fediverse. Is each instance like another person with a server? Could that person just shut it down whenever they wanted to?

Are there any companies that have invested in hosting Lemmy/ other fediverse servers?

Sorry I'm sure I messed up some of the terminology, I hope my questions make sense! I love the idea of the fediverse as I understand it, but I like to dig into these details.

In such a case, will the concept of money be wiped out from existence ?

As hinted at in the title, assuming the technology/means existed that could absorb energy fast enough, would it be possible to stop a star from going supernova, effectively "calming" it?

This is for a novel (not exactly a sci-fi one) but I'd like to keep in the realms of "technically possible".

Edit. Thank you to everyone for providing answers and specific thanks to @Solemn@lemmy.dbzer0.com @radix@lemmy.world and @Deestan@lemmy.world for the for the further reading/watching materials that have inspired a narrative solution that is kinda hand-wave-y but should be good enough to hold up to scrutiny until the moment someone with a PhD (or good enough knowledge) takes a closer look at a fictional word with a soft magic system and smashes the big ol' BS button which I think is about as much as fantasy novel writer can ask for.

Does mucus have calories? (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) by Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works to c/nostupidquestions@lemmy.world

There must be some caloric input required to produce mucus, however my question is what happens when you swallow your own mucus vs spitting. Do you retain calories by swallowing mucus?

Initial disclaimer: I'm very much a progressive person.

Recently listening to podcasts like Heavyweight, Reply All, Invisibilia, Underunderstood etc, I noticed that while the episode - or podcast overall - is investigative journalism lite, something incidental but progressive might happen (using the correct pronouns for a trans person, for example.) I also recently rewatched the Some More News episode on why conservative comedy is so awful, which sparked my pondering.

So... while I'm not interested in veering to the right, this did get me wondering what content might be out there that I've not been exposed to at all. Are there (relatively) apolitical podcasts out there that mirror those lite journalism examples above?

Is the Universe 13.8 or 26.7 billion years old?

Our universe is actually 27 billion years old, almost double the current age estimate

According to the "Standard Model" of cosmology, the Universe is 68% dark energy, 27% dark matter, 5% normal matter, and is 13.8 billion years old: as measured since the hot Big Bang.

Recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), however, have found numerous galaxies that appear early, but look surprisingly grown-up. A new theory claims to solve this "early, grown-up galaxies" problem by changing the age of the Universe to 26.7 billion years old.

I don't see much the point: cotton breaks easier than polyester, is not as expandable as spandex, cotton absorbs moisture, whereas polyester keeps it out.

Maybe I'm wrong?

I remember that it was possible at one point but now I don't seem to be able to find the option to do so.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

And I don't mean cancelling the membership.

Solution: At some point Patreon turned all "Followers" (there used to be an option under the creator name in the 3 dots menu to "follow" someone) into "Free Tier Memberships". On the website you can't see these "Free Tier Memberships" under Settings->Memberships. You have to go to each creator you have in your list on the left, go to the membership tab and click on the pencil icon to edit your membership, where you can cancel it.

In the app this whole thing is much easier as you get to see all your memberships including the "Free Tier Memberships" under the memberships point when clicking on your profile. From there you can click on every creator, then on the 3 dots menu in the top right, select "Your membership" and there you can cancel the membership.

I have no idea why this has to be so convoluted.

Edit: Oh and if the creator doesn't exist anymore you need to block and unblock them again to remove them from your list because you can't cancel a membership of a creator that doesn't exist anymore.

The closest word I can think of is a sycophant but that's too strong word and not exactly what I'm looking for. The word I'm thinking of has negative connotations and it's for someone who is friends with different groups but only at a superficial level and isn't necessarily honest about who all they're friends with. This person would be seen as untrustworthy.

I know bike tires will lose pressure in colder seasons because the air temp causes the pressure to drop, but is the inverse true? Does bike tire pressure go up in summer due to heat?

If so, do I need to deflate the tires a bit in summer? Do bike tires ever explode because of a temperature change?

I bought some leggins for running, cycling, stretching... for winter (sale) and summer.

The summer ones have some translucent bits on the back side of both knees.

There are other summer leggings, completely closed from the same brand that I didn't buy because to me those bits are well placed to get rid of moisture, and are more expensive than the completely closed ones. Maybe the seller used my naivete to convince me to buy the ones with translucent bits?

So, fashion or function? because to me the completely closed ones are more fashionable.

The closed ones are cheaper than the ones with bits, so I assume the ones with bits are better
