You can smell that place, can't you. I also really respect my man who's the only one who lugged his CRT there.

[–] Sphks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

This looks like a TV for his XBOX. Back in my days, we all had a CRT. I remember using the shotgun place in my car just for my CRT screen with integrated subwoofer and speakers. This thing was huge.

Edit. This one ! https://www.easyinfo.co.za/htm/custom/necpackard/packardbell/monitors/pb5480.html
Weight : 15kg

[–] RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 8 months ago

I used to lug my 17 inch CRT around like that too. Total pain in the ass but what alternative did you have back then...

Not a single gamer chair in sight!

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 20 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Yeah, but one dude brought a whole ass arm chair and a giant cat

[–] idunnololz@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

I'm guessing it's his hoose

[–] LucidNightmare@lemm.ee 3 points 8 months ago

That’s a pillow, friend.

[–] Mango@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

I see a dozen of them. Real gamers are too dedicated to gaming to be able to afford good gaming stuff.

From this angle, I'm assuming the guy with the duct tape is the photographer

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 4 points 8 months ago

Astute observation

[–] Crozekiel@lemmy.zip 22 points 8 months ago (1 children)

disappointed this isn't the picture of the guy duct taped to a beam in the ceiling...

[–] binomialchicken@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 8 months ago (2 children)

The thing about that photo is how it wasn't even an exaggeration of lan parties at the time. Fire code be damned, you get every single person in that room you physically can, no matter how poor the ventilation. Stick one guy in the closet sitting his screen on a file cabinet with a nightstand for a seat. The guy with the smallest monitor sets up on the window sill, with the window holding the monitor in place like a window unit. One guy sets up in the hallway where the power strip barely reaches and everyone for damn sure was screaming so he didn't miss a call out. Everyone memorized where to step over his six cables because absolutely nobody will turn on a light. There was the guy with the real full tower atx case stuffed with all the hdds and cd drives passing around 3 full binders of burned games and mods and maybe a spindle full of porn if you asked. Anyone who needed to sleep would do it straight on the floor under the folding tables with rigs blowing hot air in their face. When someone gets the last kill in the match and half the room screams WHAT?!, and then everyone steps outside for the council meeting as the AC struggles to make the room almost bearable before next match.

This write up really makes it sound more heroic than it would have been, but that's because smell doesn't parse well in text. Good piece though.

[–] kernelle@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

This guy lanparties

HEY! This is after 2010! There's a Tron poster!

[–] ThirdWorldOrder@lemm.ee 9 points 8 months ago

Yes it’s from 2011

[–] tacosplease@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

Yeah they're playing Xbox 360.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Oh wow, that's much later than I would've guessed!

Lol at the Mountain Dew.

So the fireplace says someone's house, the wooden chairs say old gathering place. Thoughts?

[–] 0110010001100010@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

It for sure looks like the basement of someones home. Best guess someone borrowed chairs from their church or something. Same with the tables. But I could be way off.

From the OP (this pic is from 2011)

“This was at a house my parents owned. They were renting it out and the previous tenant had left a few weeks prior to this so in exchange for getting the house cleaned up for the next tenant, they let me host a LAN party in the house! It was a great weekend!”

I respect that we made the same top level comments as reddit. Nothing ever changes, we really are all bots.

I'm thinking It's someone's house, but knowing they're are likely to throw a LAN party they opportunistically found a community centre/doctors office/gathering place that was throwing out the old chairs and grabbed as many as they could carry.

I grew up in a house that hoarded chairs. Between Dad hosting card nights, mum hosting social clubs, and me and my brother throwing LAN parties, any time any 4 of us were walking home and we saw an old chair on the curb, we'd carry it home with us because we always felt like we could never have enough chairs.

Our side shed had like a 60 mismatched chairs all stacked up in it. And at Christmas time we'd use them all when extended family came for a BBQ.

My brother and I would throw LAN parties in the garage. As if LAN parties weren't already stuffy and sweaty enough, we had a corrugated iron box on a concrete slab in the Australian summer. Often my parents would throw a party of their own at the same time because they knew they weren't getting any sleep with 20 kids in their late teens screaming cues in the backyard, so more chairs was more good.

Plus dad never slept during a LAN party because he was so paranoid about his garage catching fire, which I'm still surprised we never did . (at least, not an electrical fire. Every friend group has the one guy who's obsessed with fire and is always burning stuff.... That person was me, I may have set fire to my own pants and hair one party, but nothing else took damage)

The wooden chairs say "I went to goodwill and bought a bunch of wooden chairs for next to nothing."

[–] someguy3@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 months ago

Not stackable, I don't think I'd do it.

[–] steal_your_face@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 months ago

I see a code red

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 12 points 8 months ago

Not a cellphone in sight. Just people living in the moment.

[–] negativenull@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I could totally be in this picture

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Same. I had that same Metallica shirt that the guy in the foreground is wearing.

[–] negativenull@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

I didn't do gaming consoles, only PC games (Starctaft, Counterstrike, etc). I think the record we had was 26 people in one house.

[–] HappycamperNZ@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

I was black shirt, 3rd on left.

[–] s_s@lemmy.one 5 points 8 months ago

Is that a can of Code Red (bottom right)?

[–] gibmiser@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

I never understood the popularity. Mountain Dew tastes awful, and I don't ever remember any of my friends being into it.

Is it a meme, like everyone has it on their desk, but nobody is actually drinking it? LOL

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I had always heard that it contained more caffeine than other sodas, so that was enough for most teens back then to want it.

[–] roguetrick@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I was a guarana antartica drinker in my teens. More expensive, but damn is that delicious. Great drink mixer too. If you ever get a chance to try making a guarana antartica mojito, holy shit.

[–] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Ah! Well, that might explain it. I didn't even realize it was a caffeinated drink, but my god, it still tastes terrible. 😂

[–] BreathingUnderWater@lemmy.ca 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

In Canada it didn't use to be caffeinated (non-dark pops weren't allowed to contain caffeine, but things labeled as an energy drink were). That law changed a few years ago. Maybe that's why it wasn't as popular here back then?

[–] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 months ago

That would make a lot of sense! If it was only popular because of the caffeine, and it didn't have any, that would more than likely explain why I never really saw it in the 90s.

[–] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

Back in my day we mainlined mountain dew like it was water.

[–] marduk@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 8 months ago

That one guy with his 360 in portrait mode on the shaky plastic table... Livin' on the edge

[–] Mango@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

Anyone else disappointed that isn't a cat?
