Might not be that obscure but Ratatat. No idea why it's not a mainstream success.

[–] wreel@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've listened to Wildcat so much

Yeah! I like his insta posts about what he listens to too.

death's dynamic shroud. I don't do vaporwave much anymore, but I can sit there and listen to a dds.wmv tape for an entire week on repeat. Personal recommendations are the "Evangelis" tape, and the "I'll Try Living Like This" album.

It’s tough to say whether they are obscure or not, they are “obscure” in the West but I believe all these artists are moderately well-known in Eastern Europe: I love Воровайкии, Uamee (Hardbass) and Молчат Дома, to be fair I think Molchat Doma is kinda known in the West also bc of Sudno memes.

[–] lemat_87@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Comrade, I am so happy that you enjoy Hardbass. In the west, the whole genre may seem obscure, however, it was (maybe is) popular in UK (called Scouse House, maybe not exactly Hardbass but very similar), it is very popular still in Spain and Basque Country, still known in Poland (sadly, less and less, but we have good DJs like Clubbasse or Gopnik McByat), they are some good DJs from France. There are excellent DJs active, but the best club player for me is Sonic Mine from Sankt Petersburg, now sadly not active much. When I will have some spare time, I will upload somewhere his podcasts which I downloaded from some obscure Russian website, which is down now probably.

[–] ButtigiegMineralMap@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Awesome! I liked Gopnik McBlyat but I thought the name was a tad on the nose lol. It’s like if an American artist was named “Hipster O’Yankee” so I figured they weren’t actually from Eastern Europe, I’m glad to be wrong about that one 😂

[–] lemat_87@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Actually, you are not far from truth. The word "Gopnik" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopnik is not in use in Poland, we have a similar notion of "dresiarz" (one who wear only tracksuit, likes to beat people), but not many Polish people even know the word "Gopnik". Poland is a strange country, which is not fully Eastern, but also not fully western, even if many politicians want it. There is artist from Spain, as I remember, called Sukahard, while "suka" is popular word in Slavic languages, meaning "removed", and Spanish artists also frequently borrow the gopnik culture elements. BTW, this is one of the best, in my subjective taste, and most hardcore sets of Gopnik McBlyat, unless you already know it: https://m.soundcloud.com/tri-poloski-records/gopnik-mcblyat-at-tri-poloski-utrecht-04-02-23

[–] ButtigiegMineralMap@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ahh! Три Полоски🤣 I love this one, I used to play this one to my Polish friends and they liked it, I bet none of us knew we were listening to Polish music lol. Do u mind if I PM u some of my fav Hardbass songs?

I guess Igorrr and Naked City are some of the most, I don't know if exactly obscure, but hard to listen to, for sure.

[–] pax27@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Made a comment myself and then found yours, I also mentioned Naked City. For some reason I really like them, it could just be my brand of madness.

[–] sovietsnake@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well John Zorn is a true innovator and knew how to mix all of the vanguardism stuff with the punk/grindcore scene, it's something completely natural if you like to listen to music that breaks boundaries.

[–] pax27@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago

I do enjoy his shenanigans, at least the (by his standards) more approachable stuff.

I remember asking about the concert after my cousin saw Zorn for a forth time, ages ago and he just said "Well, I'm not sure it's really music anymore".

I dont know how obscure these bands actually are, but i havent met anyone irl who listens to them...

King gizzard and the lizard wizard

Kikagaku Moyo

And

Altin Gün

Are some of my favorites

[–] ratboy@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Kikagaku Moyo are do amazing. Sad that they broke up and I never got a chance to see them!!

[–] CohortCzort@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Although it is sad they broke up, that last album was great, and a welcomed addition to their discography.

King gizzard and the lizard wizard

Nice PFP :)

[–] ratboy@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

That's a hard one because the majority of my music taste is pretty obscure, I am a huge music nerd. Here are a couple:

Comus - First Utterance fucking dope dark/psych/acoustic folky band from the early 70's. Think like, evil Jethro Tull. One of my favorite albums, highly recommend

Elizabeth Color Wheel - Nocebo Seen this band 3 times and they always make me cry, so good. Heavy noisy wall of sound chaotic melodic hardcoreish goodness. If you like My Bloody Valentine this might be up your alley, they are heavier.

Pinnochio - S/T Fast, fun, femme vocal punk rock that makes you wanna pogo

[–] Spanish_Commie@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 year ago

Derek Messink. YT algorithm recommended one of their tracks one time and I listen to their music since then.

Theeeeeere's
Antimony Arsenic Aluminum Selenium

[–] CPCsStrongestWumao@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Pete Seeger is most definitely NOT obscure in any sense of the word, but i wanna share my favorite song of his: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJBksL69gX4

[–] AlbigensianGhoul@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I really like Danny Schmidt and Satellite High but the Nightvale Weather Report has some 240 very high quality songs each from a small group or individual musicians. Might be worth a look on shuffle and you'll likely find a couple small artists you really enjoy. Jerusalem and "Bill and Annie" have completely different vibes to illustrate how diverse the playlist is.

[–] Gatsby@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The Bus is Late is one of my top 10 tracks

[–] ComradeSalad@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Whitewoods, also known as Bug Your Parents.

Made somewhat popular by Pyrocynical from his use of their song Beachwalk in his outro, along with Whitewoods revolutionizing Vaporwave by basically founding the genre. However many of their songs are extremely obscure and I assume that absolutely no one knows who they are.

Beachwalk: https://youtu.be/oF9yHO-UUws

12 million views, so definitely a hit, but they are overall very small and obscure in the grander scheme of things.

There is this super obscure Australian prog metal band (in a King Crimson kind of way, not the Dream Theater kind) called Serious Beak that released this awesome album 9 years ago called Huxwhukw. It's some early djenty stuff in there too, I think it sounds amazing. I've always tried to get people into it but with no luck.

Serious Beak - Huxwhukw

[–] Leninismydad@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 year ago

Faux Fiction. They are a garage rock band from Minnesota in the US, love them.

[–] ybl@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Too add some Indian indie flavor to the mix, MALFNKTION is relatively obscure, the guy samples dialogues from old Bollywood movies to make funky electronic tracks.

[–] Big_Farto@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Scale the summit is pretty good if you like instrumental music focused around the guitar

I listen to a lot of metal and some of the genres and bands I like are kind of obscure to people who aren't familiar with the genre. I really like Mongolian folk metal (i.e., Nine Treasures) but Vvilderness released a great album I basically listen to on repeat lol

I also like Lana Del Rey though.

I loved Slugabed's and Samuel Organ's collaborative project Peter Talisman. There's only one album out though and I don't know if they're going to make more. I've never heard music like that and so hasn't the Internet, because neither spotify, youtube or last fm is able to give me something similar to it.

I doubt they're considered obscure, just a bunch of indie bands, but some of my top listened to artists of the past few years have been these:

[–] pax27@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago

I don't know how obscure they are, but the band Naked City made quite an obscure album called Leng Tch'e (not the band called something similar) that I simply love. I wouldn't call it easy listening, but there's just something about it that hits the spot for me. I can recommend Naked City in general if you're down for some jazz-grindcore-surfer-metal. Yeah, they don't really fit into any one genre, or any five even.

I have a few but The Private Sector is a good one.

Probably Nothingface. I feel like my music taste is mostly stuff that’s avant-garde in a popular way (say Limp Bizkit, or Xxxtentacion). That’s why I’d say nothingface, because it’s like what I generally like, but I’ve never heard anyone mention it, irl or online (I found it in a search result for the word communist). In additions Sankara’s great, and only known online.

[–] silent_clash@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Lawrence

Phoebe Katis

Been listening to Trousdale recently.

I could get more obscure but I personally know them and I'm trying to be anonymous on Lemmy.
