You don't have to wait until all the states have had their primaries but it seems prudent to wait until a candidate has a majority of delegates. Even just wait until Super Tuesday in 3 weeks after which 40% of delegates will be assigned.

You say it's imagination; I say it's the actual most likely outcome if Trump falls off the GOP ticket, regardless of how it happens.
And I'd go a step farther and assert that this is the real reason Trump is laying personal claim to the RNC now and putting a family member in, much like Napoleon putting relatives on all the European thrones he could.
To Trump's solipsistic brain, he IS the RNC, the Republican party, and still the president, so why is there a pot of money that he does not yet control?
But it's not just the money, although the money is certainly the most important thing. Remember that caucuses and conventions are not dictated by the Constitution, only the Electoral College and the actual counting of the presidential votes are. The rest is up to the states and to the individual parties, and they rely far more on tradition and handshake agreements as opposed to actual law.
Thus, if Trump controls the RNC, I'm not entirely sure there's a mechanism to prevent him from simply naming himself the Republican candidate, even if he's in jail or off the ballot or Nikki Haley gets more votes.

Say what you want about the RNC and Republicans, but they have a lot of sway over their base and are much better at messaging than the DNC. They could dump Trump with a unified effort (and naturally have some temporal fallout), but the fact that they haven't really tried says that they like being his cucks.
The RNC has the far right on lock because the quiet part is largely out loud now. Meanwhile, the DNC needs everyone else but actively tells anybody further left than mid right or so to fuckin shove IT. Even Democrat voters are more hostile to leftists than they are Republicans/MAGAts.
As long as the DNC is capitalist first and political second, they're just rolling over for Trump.

I said this in another comment, but caucuses and primaries are not dictated by the Constitution. They are run by the individual parties in each state and are based on a combination of state law, traditions, and handshake agreements, which Trump has a history of simply ignoring and/or steamrollering.

I don't think there is one, and for anyone who believes this can't be done, I would refer you back to 2020 which was the most recent time the RNC shut down the primary season and called it for Trump:
In February 2019, the Republican National Committee voted to provide undivided support to Trump. Several states canceled their primaries and caucuses. Other states were encouraged to use "winner-takes-all" or "winner-takes-most" systems to award delegates instead of using proportional allocation.

The cynical view would be that a big part of US democracy is the media spectacle and election extravaganza to make people think they have a meaningful impact.
