latest one is making pixel art.

wanted to get into the hobby, so for Christmas I am making my wife a picture of each of the vacations we've been on.

this is a work in progress of a church on a hill we saw in Iceland:

https://i.imgur.com/TqLk5G0.png

Also, smoking meat.

Has been so much fun to learn and has resulted in some of the best food we have ever had.

Also, setting up a retro emulator with an old phone.

Currently procuring ROMs, organizing them, and getting a good front end and emu cores configured.

Playing through pokemon ROM hacks has been fun.

Fermenting. Kraut, pickles, cauliflower, hot peppers to make my own hot sauce, horseradish, garlic honey, etc

Kombucha, water kefir, milk kefir.

Sourdough. Made my first caraway seeded sourdough rye today. Chefs kiss.

Growing mushrooms of the legal and illegal kind.

I'm doing a first attempt at brewing beer as well as wine right now.

Just put some mj seeds in a paper towel. Decked out the basement for a full grow.

Raising chickens for the eggs, a lot of which I also pickle.

Gardening with my wife. We mainly only ate our own back yard goods this summer and fall.

I'm going to try to make soap this weekend hot a mold kit and some sodium hydroxide.

Growing plants in a kratky hydroponics system. We made so much pesto this year from that.

And I still somehow work a 40 hour week :D

Beer. I've visited 100's of micro-breweries in 18 states and 4 countries. This January will be the 5th country (Mexico).

It's kinda like Raiders of the Lost Ark... I'm looking for the most delicious fresh beer.

[–] vladmech@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

What are some fun or weird stand outs you’d recommend?

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Weird: German Rauchbier. Literally smoked beer. Actually good, but you can't really drink much of it. It was designed as an accompanying drink for smoked food and / or cigars.

I like restoring antique radios. Mainly just the electronics, but I'd like to learn how to restore the exteriors as well. It's nice to work on something tangible after working on a computer all day

[–] LadyLikesSpiders@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I don't know why, but a hobby like this is kinda cute

[–] mkwarman@lemmy.mkwarman.com 4 points 10 months ago

Thanks :) My wife is very supportive despite constantly having to find room for more antique audio equipment...

Tabletop RPG. There are other hobbies, but this brings me the most joy. Shout out to all sci-fi Fate players! There are dozens of us!

cycling is fun, i love riding my ebike around even in the cold

[–] two_wheel2@lemm.ee 9 points 10 months ago

I like riding my bike a lot and camping. Just did a ride down the Oregon coast this last summer and it was a total blast

Self hosting and software of course, but that's probably pretty common on here

Disc golf! It's often free to play, discs are pretty cheap, good exercise, enjoy nature, fun with friends. Give it a try!

I didn't find any good enough hobby in this 35 years of life that didn't fade after some time. At moment I'm very empty inside, I spend half day sleeping and other half working, everything looks expansive to do, I give up on everything, I'm keeping myself alive because I'm just scared of the pain and I can't imagine stop existing.

[–] GreyTechnician@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago

Ah, hang in there man. I'm sure you will pull through.

[–] jeena@jemmy.jeena.net 3 points 10 months ago (5 children)

Why do you expect it not to fade away? There is limited time so obviously you can only do something for a limited time otherwise you can't try anything new which might be more fun, but that doesn't mean you don't and didn't enjoy doing the older thing before.

I enjoyed cooking and baking as well as needle felting and crochet to make amigurumi toys.

I also liked to read, study languages and collect the odd die-cast model cars.

No longer as much since I rarely have time anymore, but I played piano and other keyboard instruments, and dabbled in drawing.

-Tabeltop gaming

-Videogames

-Playing Guitar

-Walking/hiking. Just casual stuff, I'm not hoofing it out in the middle of the forest

-Worldbuilding and story writing

-Watching anime, other cartoons, shows

-Not so much a hobby, but a probably unhealthy fascination and love for the victorian era. If a subject counts as a hobby, this is one of them

[–] Moonguide@lemmy.ml 6 points 10 months ago

Gaming, cooking, and reading. I've taken up dungeons and dragons recently, acting as DM for some of my friends, their first time playing DnD as well. Currently prepping for my second campaign, a cold war-inspired Song of Ice and Fire setting during the Andal invasion of the Vale. Almost done preparing the classes available, and nearly done with the overarching plot. Still have to do the maps and the wiki, though.

I really enjoy making ice cream. It’s fun coming up with a concept and trying to translate it into ice cream. My favorite idea so far was turning a black diamond ski run into a flavor: swirled herb blackberry and vanilla ice creams with broken pretzel sticks and crushed oreos. I call it Yard Sale.

I also enjoy trying to make classic flavors into non-dairy because dairy ultimately isn’t sustainable but ice cream should be sustainable.

Oh no… I always feel guilty when I think of the list of hobbies I tried and half-heartedly try to keep up with.
The ones I consistently get back to are reading, writing, singing (to myself), gaming, drawing, coloring (yes I like to color in coloring pages :) and generating AI Images.
Other than that, I have a 3d printer for which I try to create 3d models when I have the time and energy. I still need to teach myself Blender some day but whenever I open up the software, I immediately give up :)

My latest big hobby has been Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), basically medieval sword fighting. It's a great workout for mind and body and is filled with nerds into swords and the history of it haha

Also big into swing dancing, ultimate frisbee, and board/video gaming

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Boardgaming. I’m a graphic designer and love seeing the quality of some of the components and also like putting my design talents to work creating cheat sheets and player aids. It also helps me to learn the rules that way, since I usually have to figure out what’s most important in the rules and I need to organize the information.

Tabletop games, writing, doing little engineering problems at home, and recently I got into bookbinding to restore old crumbling paperbacks!

[–] Xamith@lemmy.ca 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Okay so flying kites is a very good time. Two line sport kites can be reasonably cheap and easy to learn. You can transition into larger power kites that are a total blast and quite a workout to control. I've never done it but you can move up to kiteboarding or similar sports as well.

Tabletop wargaming. Lots of systems, and I lot painting and especially scratch building or converting models. I love converting and the history of wargaming so much I made my own website (shameless self promote scratch-that.org) and I have dug deep to try and save old Web 1.0 stuff, much of which I haven’t posted for various reasons.

Airsoft. Love running around in the woods as the hunter or hunted.

Brewing mead. Super easy. Way easier than liquor.

Running. I’m terrible at it but oh well.

Lifting. I can do a 1005lb leg press!

Making 3D assets for video games. This is lapsed but I used to love helping make stuff for game jams.

Firearms. I’m American, I don’t have a choice on this one. I like both history and mechanics of them. Used to do 3-guns and I didn’t place at the bottom.

Is reading a hobby? I like to read when life stops roaring (rare).

Learning French because I fucking love the French, and cooking for myself and people I care about. I also strangely find comfort in math, like I'm genuinely happy solving math problems which is why I'm going to uni for actuary.

RC cars. I was into local club racing in the 90s, dropped out of it when my kids were born, now I'm getting back into it.

The technology improvements in power, battery capacity, and radios have been frankly astonishing. Setups that would have cost $1000+ back in the 90s come as ready-to-run kits for $200 now, and perform better.

Obtained my motorbike licensed recently..really enjoying learning how to get good at riding a motorcycle..I don't get time.tonride as it is and I really need to make time to do slow manoeuvres as this is what is required to pass the next stage of licensing.

I love seeing live music, however, where I love it's just not an option to do each week. I love listening to records.. me and the kid put a record on when doing the housework..teaching them the ways!

Used to play video games every day for a few minutes..but haven't played one in 5 months.

Love baking baguettes, couronnes, bagels, pizza

Art mostly, I would post more of it if not for Lemmy changing the picture settings. I have thousands of scattered works.

My other hobby isn't so open.

Cryptography

Primarily... gaming, cooking, and makeup. Also reading, listening to music, and (if you count it) watching movies and TV shows.

I'm a creative person who likes to write/make other art as well, but I don't do it nearly as often as I'd like to.

[–] jwagner7813@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Outside of gaming, I play softball regularly. Run multiple teams and sub when I can during the season.

Probably going to pick up electric guitar soon too. Been dying to learn just haven't had time.

  • Painting Warhammer figures. Not really into playing the game, it’s too complicated for me in my old age, but I like building and painting the models
  • my neighbour just got me started on playing darts. It’s a lot more difficult than I would have expected
  • gardening. This week I put up new trellises and tied up the wild climbing roses
