I, personally, like to take the opportunity to express aspirations: not just trying to stop doing things I feel are harmful, but also to try new things or practice positive things more. A couple from me:

  • Avoid sarcasm when dealing with people, especially strangers, it does not go over well when they don't get the joke
  • Do something positive, helpful, and non-criminal to counter the right wing political trend. (granted, this one needs more detail)

How about you?

I want to be more mindful of the things I buy. I want to support local business first even if that means taking an hour or two to find something I like, instead of a few minutes.

It has a second benefit of filtering what I really need instead of what I want.

It is another small step to reduce my carbon footprint.

[–] Randelung@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

My goal has been for ages to lose weight. Biking to work was not feasible for time efficiency reasons. I gave up Coke (for something better). Now the food season is upon us and despite some progress I'm back where I was last year. So now I got a stationary bike for in front of the TV. It costs as much as a year of gym, but I can do it anytime. At least that's the theory.

Also I'm probably going to pay for a dating app now. My request for friends and family to take pictures of me has largely gone unfulfilled, though.

Get a car. I've never actually needed one but I'm staying in Thailand this year and the rainy season will be tough in 2025 so some shelter would be nice. It's a big learning experience and the 2nd hand market here is really scammy so it's not that easy to find something without investing a big chunk of time.

My biggest goal is to get a new band together. After moving across the country in 2021, I have desperately missed writing, recording, and most of all, performing.

I resolve to give up New Year’s resolutions. It’s too god damn much pressure.

Unfortunately now that I’ve made my resolution, I can’t figure out - did I succeed or fail at keeping my resolution?🤔

Not bust a nut for whole entire year

Hahaha fr dude, Visit my profile.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago

Someone I knew told me that instead of making resolutions, they used the new year to review the last year, and then maybe adjust their ongoing goals in response. Seems way more useful to me. I've done it a bit, and it gives more of a sense of direction/velocity, and less opportunity for guilty failure.

[–] grasshopper_mouse@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

Drink even less alcohol than last year (and I cut way back last year, too)

[–] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 7 points 20 hours ago

Try to be able to comfortably run a half marathon. This time last year I set the same goal but for 10k and I've definitely hit that goal, but want to go further.

[–] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

To remember to make resolutions next year

Same as last year and the year before.

[–] Kit@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 18 hours ago

Tryna not drink so much, starting with Sober January. I've been drinking heavily after an incredibly rough year of personal BS, and I need a break from it to get my head on straight.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

To either finish projects or cancel them and move on. No more lingering crap.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

That has been mine a few years ago inspired by the cult of done manifesto and I found it very compelling! Maybe you'll find this helpful

[–] dirtySourdough@lemmy.world 11 points 23 hours ago

Slow down, live in the present, and enjoy who and what I already have in my life. That includes being more forgiving to myself and others, worrying less about all of the possible things I could be doing (personally and professionally) and instead choosing one thing at a time to focus my energy on, and being more aware of my own thoughts and feelings, then expressing them in a healthy way.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

All of it?

(Seriously, that's actually a good resolution if you have anxiety)

[–] DudeImMacGyver@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 hours ago

Maybe, we'll see.

To only focus on what I can impact locally and build out more mutual aid.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 6 points 23 hours ago

To do dry January at least. Been drinking way too much lately

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I plan to cause more chaos.

[–] Bosht@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Hail Chaos!

[–] Monster96@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'd like to travel more this year. I have a list of places I'd like to see.

  • Fremont Street in Las Vegas
  • Hawaii
  • Big Ben
  • Akihabara
  • A sunlit beach

Now that I have steady work, I can finally afford these things.

[–] janus2@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

If you're going to Vegas, see if Meow Wolf's Omega Mart immersive art exhibit might be up your alley. It's so ridiculously cool.

[–] Bosht@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

I'll second this! Worth every penny, and I recommend paying for VIP as it gives a whole story / background / lore and gets you more involved in the installations. I seriously can't wait to go back and check more out.

[–] ComradeMiao@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

A sunlit beach? Is this different from a normal beach during the day

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Monster96@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

Nah, maybe just a normal beach

[–] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 8 points 1 day ago

I would also like to do more organizing, politically.

[–] QualifiedKitten@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

None of these have Jan 1 as the start date, but...

  • I'm getting laid off, so getting a new job is top priority.
  • Continue improving my physical fitness by being more consistent in my running and strength training. I cancelled my gym membership a little over a year ago, and have been struggling with consistency ever since.
Running outside is so much more enjoyable than running on a treadmill, but I struggle to get myself moving when it's too cold/wet/dark/hot/sunny outside.
  • I deleted Windows and installed Linux Mint on my "primary" laptop, and it's good enough for my basic needs, but I want to spend some time getting more comfortable with more complicated things, as I've already run into a few tasks that I had to either give up on or switch to a different device for.
[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Just to do good to people and stop being so negative to others.

I've given up on trying to figure out other people. I seldom get it right in trying to understand where others are coming from, what they are thinking, what they want, or in figuring out what they are really saying. I'm middle aged now and at this point in my life, I'm not bothering much to figure out what the other person wants ... if you can't make it clear, it's not my job to figure it out. I'm open to different opinions, ideas, genders, identities, races or ways of living but I get tired trying to understand someone new who can't make themselves clear.

So from now on, I just treat everyone with kindness and patience.

This also doesn't mean I'm going to roll over and let people abuse me or take advantage of me. I'm not that gullible and I won't take any right wing rhetoric, hatred or fear mongering.

[–] Bosht@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Honestly I'm not sure on your age but I get exactly what you're saying. I'm not sure if it's a recent thing but I feel like there's a layer of bs with younger generations and a lot of beating around the bush as opposed to discussing issues and facing problems. Idk, maybe I just have less patience for it. My ranting aside, hope you the best and make sure you're not holding things against yourself when it is an issue with the other person.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

Just a hunch with no evidence, but I suspect that this might be a bit circular, and that by giving up and being kinder and more patient, you might get better at understanding people.

Very good resolution (even if I'm wrong)!

[–] BenVimes@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's stereotypical, but I want to continue getting fit.

After decades is putting it off, I finally felt inspired to start exercising regularly back in September. I'm going to try to keep that up, and I know it's going to be hard because we'll be welcoming a child into the world early in the new year.

I guess another resolution would be, "try not to lose my sanity dealing with a newborn and toddler at the same time."

[–] Corno@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Get better at my art.

[–] Tywele@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

Do more voice training.

I don't really do resolutions, but I'm looking forward to 2025 being a (hopefully) better year. I've already started a few things but I have a lot on my sort of to-dos.

  • Find a new place to live
  • Finalize divorce
  • Focus on healthier foods, better habits
  • Take my dog to a wide open beach and let him run
  • Take back my independence
  • Hope and pray the new political administration is more incompetent than they want to be
  • Focus on my friends and found family, be a good person

The future holds so much right now and while I'm still struggling to feel optimistic, I do get the small tingles of hope now and again.

focus on myself and my art and my programming, get better at it, become popular!!! and give people valuable and good lessons, and stop eating junk food

[–] Platypus@lemmings.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nothing. I never reach anything anyways.

[–] Coskii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 22 hours ago

The only thing I want to reach are my toes. This year I'm going to try to increase my flexibility.

[–] Vaggumon@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

New Years Resolutions are a complete and total waste of time and energy. If you want to improve an aspect of you life, just do it. An arbitrary date on a calendar isn't going to make that more or less likely to succeed.

[–] DavidDoesLemmy@aussie.zone 0 points 12 hours ago

It is going to make you more likely to consider resolutions though.
