Summary

Unidentified drones were recently spotted over the US air base in Ramstein, Germany, and facilities belonging to German arms maker Rheinmetall, according to Der Spiegel.

Similar sightings occurred earlier in Brunsbüttel, with some officials suspecting Russian espionage, though no evidence has been confirmed.

The US Air Force stated the Ramstein base experienced “no impacts” and is monitoring the airspace with German authorities.

This follows reports of drone sightings in New Jersey and at UK air bases, which US authorities say do not currently pose a national security threat.

You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a box of drones with the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone
Back at base, sparks in the software
Flash the message "Something's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
99 little drones go by

99 little drones
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
The 99 little drones go by

99 Decision Street
99 ministers meet
To worry, worry, super scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The President is on the line
As 99 little drones go by

99 knights of the air
Ride super high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a superhero
Everyone's a Captain Kirk
With orders to identify
To clarify and classify
Scrambling the summer sky
99 little drones go by

As 99 little drones go by

99 dreams I have had
In every one, a little drone
It's all over, and I'm standing pretty
In this dust that was a city
If I could find a souvenir
Just to prove the world was here
And here is a little drone
I think of you, and let it go

Nena - 99 Red Balloons, for those that are too young to remember

It's probably on youtube

Or 99 Luftballons in the original.

And I don't know about old... it's starting to feel like we're right back in the eighties... at least for the bad bits...

We don't have zombie Reagan and Thatcher..... yet

[–] leftzero@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 1 week ago

We do have another senile hollywood "actor" in the white house, though...

(As for the perfidious Albion... as much as I despise that witch at least she didn't pull a brexit on them... luckily I ain't afflicted with being British, so I'm not up to date with the extent to which they are fucked, but from outside things are looking about as bleak as when she was infesting the place, though thanks to brexit the effects seem to be more contained to the isles, at least...)

wtf, did you just do this whole cover for this simple post?

The diamonds you sometimes find on lemmy...

I just replaced “red balloons” with “little drones”.

The song has always been about world war three being triggered by a silly innocent little thing, and the English version is almost as old as the original German.

It kinda sounds like something that leads to a threat when put together like that

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You can make anything look like a threat if you frame it correctly.

Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action--but this only applies if they're related. Thousands of people are flying drones around all kinds of places every day.

[–] intensely_human@lemm.ee 2 points 1 week ago

Heuristics are hackable. If your heuristic is “once is happenstance” then your enemy can just conduct their operations once and you’ll never recognize it.z

My wife is not into metal, but she took her brother to a Rammstein concert in the 90s and said it was absolutely amazing, so I'm not surprised they've incorporated drones into the act.

They also had a bit of a scandal around alleged sexual assault, and coersion of sex from fans semi-recently. Big in German media, probably less so internationally. Great shows, but I'm not willing to give them any more money.

Drones over Rammstein!?

Feuer frei!

So far I have read reports of drones or other "UFOs" over the Capitol, off the Oregon coast, in New Jersey, and now over a U.S. air base. The article about the Oregon UFOs theorized that they were starlink satellite flares. Am I being a conspiracy theorist or is this weird? If it's our friend Leon, what would be the point? Intimidation?

[–] Bosht@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeeeah...there's been a lot of drone reports from a wide enough area now that I'm starting to get paranoid as well.

[–] PagingDoctorLove@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Even Magic The Gathering is tweeting about the government drones. Usually I ignore her but... I don't know, this is all so much.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I imagine the drones are some product launch by amazon or some delivery service-- or some idiotic stunt by Elon Musk. The amateurish and ineffectual buzz manufacturing has Musk written all over it.

The fact that the government knows its not a threat means they know exactly what it is and just dont feel like telling us. I hope people remember later that this nonsense went down on bidens watch.
