I keep thinking I should look into this MrBeast drama, then I remember I just do not give a single fuck.

I went through a h3h3 phase when I was like 20, then realised that any YT drama is just toxic and it’s best to avoid it entirely.

I miss Tom Scott, just made quality videos with none of the BS. Nothing over the top, just interesting content from a genuine guy who cares about his audience.

Technology Connections is a nice breath of fresh air in the YouTube space if you want something tech related

[–] Agrivar@lemmy.world 51 points 2 months ago (11 children)

He's GREAT! I just wish he had more content... but then it probably wouldn't be as good. I guess I really wish I hadn't already binged his whole channel!

Cathod Ray Dude.

EDIT: There is also

  1. Calum - dude does weird deep dives on niche topics like secret bunkers from WWII, snow mobiles or camper planes.

  2. Our Own Devices - mostly 10min videos on old military devices.

I love how subtly unhinged he is.

Tom Scott was a good YouTuber because his ego was able to handle him voluntarily stepping down.

[–] pwnicholson@lemmy.world 37 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Destin at Smarter Every Day and Steven Mould seem like solid guys, and content similar to Tom Scott if you haven't seen them.

[–] zero_spelled_with_an_ecks@programming.dev 51 points 2 months ago (15 children)

Destin's religion is a turnoff for me along with the inclusion of children. His reactions are way too over the top, too. Used to watch it a bunch but have slowly drifted away.

Destin at Smarter Every Day

I enjoy his content and like him and his style but I still have a bitter taste in my mouth from him being a former missile guidance engineer at Redstone and making this low-key military ad series. I mean he has been pretty upfront about his past career and such but he also knows that his channel is probably watched by a lot of children.

I don't know, something feels off about it.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 23 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Destin is so American and military power it creeps me out.

[–] Eldritch@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Mould is great. Matt Parker too.

Primitive Technology: Just a guy out in the forest making stuff by hand, absolutely no talking, no drama. It's somehow relaxing to watch. He may have even built the camera itself out of sticks and stones.

Channels with absolutely zero drama that are still active and I would describe as " interesting content made by someone who cares about it" :

  • cracking the cryptic: solving sudoku puzzles twice daily

  • chessnetwork: explaining famous chess matches and occasionally playing online chess, but with none of the bro culture that has grown up around chess recently

  • Folding ideas: great video essays about film or modern phenomena like NFTs

  • Technology connections: already reccommended, but in depth explanations about how electronics work

  • Language Jones: videos about linguistics and learning new languages

  • Numberphile/StandUpMaths- interesting math videos

you can just make up two stupid names in your head and get all the benefit of youtube drama - here:

did you hear than Zzzamboney copied a video from Mr457? Turns out that the latest in ZB's "I'm a chicken" series is actually 457's "Birdalike" vid but with the turkeys swapped for chickens.

[–] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 18 points 2 months ago

10/10 would be outraged again

[–] teft@lemmy.world 22 points 2 months ago (4 children)

You might like Anton Petrov. He’s a science youtuber that does a different video every day. He mostly focuses on space science but he's pretty uncontroversial. I like his videos a lot.

Ill post this comment here too since it's the same video, but you might want to put a content warning on this video, it's pretty rough.

The first video is largely about him running illegal lotteries, which is pretty terrible given the scale they operate at, but it's something that the average person might not know about or really think about it being essentially child gambling.

This second video is an interview with a former employee who was put in solitary confinement for a video that never made it to YouTube because it was actually just them torturing him. Like, legitimate Geneva Convention war crime torture. Constant noise, no idea what time it is because you can't see the sun, constant lights so you can't sleep, constant monitoring, and him running until his feet bled.

If any of it is anywhere near true they need to be sued off the face of the planet in addition to going to prison.

Mr. Beast’s suppurating carcass should be fired into the sun.

EDIT: along with anyone who downvoted this comment. Sorry, pacifists.

I've never watched a single video of MrBeast. The topics just don't interest me at all. I really don't see the hype.

[–] sunzu@kbin.run 40 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Showing your age bro...

His audience are kids, maybe early 20s now

You have to be a kid not to see the grift

It's funny you say that, because last summer a coworker of mine became completely obsessed with Mr Beast. He's a 50y/o retired marine captain. Not the kind of person that fits into the normal beast demographic.

Fuck Mr. Beast. The real heroes worthy of praise are your friends and neighbors who are out there volunteering and/or doing good things for others without making a fucking spectacle of it.

Mr. Beast with his bucky ass face and products plastered on every last corner of the earth has left a bad taste in my mouth for years, but up until recently people have been unable to criticize him in any way without a thousand others rushing to his defense and declaring what a beautiful, selfless person he is. It's Ellen all over again.

People truly are blinded by philanthropy-for-clout and mistake it for genuine goodwill. Truly good people do not film themselves handing out food and money.

I've never watched a single video of his and I could have told you that he's a sociopath. Normal people do not act like he does.

I think Dogpack is brave. Jimmy and his attorneys can cook up a worthless lawsuit to hurt Dogpack financially. Jimmy is so rich legal expenses won't be problematic. While Dogpack may have a hard time with legal expenses, I think.

It's like Logan Paul versus Coffeezilla. Logan is so rich; Coffeezilla isn't.

No shit. Billionaire pays poor people to embarrass or endanger themselves, uses it to promote himself.

Here’s an idea for a video: Mr. Beast and the Box of Knives. Him, the people he exploits, and a box of knives. Whoever kills him gets to keep his money.

That’s the content I want to see.

[–] IGuessThisIsForNSFW@yiffit.net 25 points 2 months ago (2 children)

This is what I've said about Mr.Beast from day 1. First video I saw of his was putting his friends in a taped off square in some backyard and the last one to leave keeps the car. So a rich asshole makes people dance for money and then he profits off the video for more than he paid. Mr.Beast is 1 of 2 youtubers that I have used an extension to explicitly block me from seeing his videos in my feed.

I've got to say, I'm disappointed in Lemmy for the amount of upvotes you're receiving for a comment as sickening as this.

Killing someone just for revenge should never be the answer. That's the kind of tactic that makes dictators and fascists what they are. The desire to watch something like that is even more alarming.

i literally had no idea who this guy was until like last year.. my partner showed me some clips and i immediately got bad vibes. i told her i thought he was just doing these nice things for the money and attention and she was shocked. but here we are lol

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Someone showed me a video of him giving 100 people (age 1 to 100 or something) a chance to win money

The whole thing was gross and exploitive but he’s just laughing at them

Guess who's gonna make the alt-right turn in a month?

That's right! It's Mr ~~Beast~~ Couch

[–] VirtualOdour@sh.itjust.works 30 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I went into these two videos expecting them to be overblown and petty, totally changed my mind with a good solid string of evidence and explanations.

I’m not a YouTube guy; I only follow one channel I found during the Covid lockdowns, this kid called Technoblade who was low key while being really good at the game Minecraft. They worked together sometimes. Didn’t make Mr Beast seem very cool.

From what I’ve seen, he just inserts his loud personality into things by throwing money at people. It was never “hanging out with Mr Beast”, but “Mr Beast is giving out money”. Those guys are generally bad people, I cannot think of an exception.

[–] Daxtron2@startrek.website 20 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'm not sure if you know already but techno passed away not too long ago :(

The whole “content cop” vibe of this video is fucked considering its such a serious topic. We need an actual journalist to dig into this.

[–] Casual_Harper@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

I don't use the word cringe much, but the way this was presented gave me second-hand embarrassment. It was hard for me to watch, content notwithstanding.

What's with the recent traction for the Mr Beast hate train? There have been a few posts lately talking about how bad this guy is.

[–] TheMinions@lemmy.world 56 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There’s a part 1 to this video that goes into it. Basically:

  • videos are faked (reality level TV stuff - making the timers look like they’re still counting down)
  • there was a person who was recently on staff who was a sexual deviant named Ava Kris Tyson who also seemed to be obsessed with teenagers and ran a discord server talking about inappropriate stuff (this is worse than my description sounds)
  • Beast was on this server for a time but doesn’t seem to have been an active participant
  • Illegal lotteries from the Streaming “giveaways”
  • claiming his chocolate is “healthy” and encourage kids to eat it to have a chance at randomly winning a prize
  • in Aus, having an app for the chocolate that says you win a prize when you pull the slots but you actually don’t win anything (basically getting triple 7s and getting told you win nothing)
  • safety issues with the beast games, moving to Canada so no union workers can join, etc.
  • this video explains some horrible stuff Mr Beast and team did for a single video

Really the biggest deal I think is the illegal lotteries. Because those are actual criminal acts

[–] QuadratureSurfer@lemmy.world 20 points 2 months ago

Part 1 also shows some evidence of fake contestants (who are actually actors) that end up winning the prize.

[–] Iapar@feddit.org 16 points 2 months ago

Just people finding out that Santa isn't real but in fact a company which uses psychological warfare to sell you something that is bad for you.

A story as old as capitalism.

This fella loves using his leverage manipulating people into whatever the fuck he wants them to do. The border between good and evil is so close it is nearly indistinguishible. Stay the fuck away from him if you can.
