Summary

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. vowed to overhaul parts of the FDA, specifically targeting the agency's nutrition department, which he claims "are not doing their jobs" and failing to protect public health.

Kennedy, a known opponent of vaccinations and the pharmaceutical industry, said he could “clear out” corruption in health agencies. President-elect Donald Trump has indicated he would give Kennedy significant influence over health policy, though Trump’s campaign denied he would lead HHS.

Experts and family members warn that Kennedy’s anti-vaccine stance could have serious public health repercussions.

People had no idea how good we had it. Guess we all have to learn the hard lessons again.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 81 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Those of us who survive it anyway

I'm serious folks, a lot of people died the first term and a lot will die again.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 51 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Calling it now:

Bird flu will make the jump this summer. It will be just like The Spanish flu and start at a pig farm in Kansas.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

My bet is a poultry farm in Iowa.

[–] aStonedSanta@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

T for trumpetta. Lmao god I hope not

[–] wolfpack86@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Well, then maybe we will be cured of the republican problem when boomers die and younger conservatives sacrifice their children to their emperor via antivaxxing.

Nature always finds a way.

[–] Clent@lemmy.world 63 points 2 days ago (3 children)

How presumptuous of you to assume they'll learn anything.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They sure didn't learn anything from the 1940s.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

If your referring to the fox trot you are correct. I take the electric slide the best I can

[–] ApexHunter@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago

They'll just blame illegal immigrants for spreading disease, and the liberal Hollywood elite for letting them come here.

[–] APassenger@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

The only thing to learn from history is that people don't.

Hey, kids! Do you want to know what diphtheria is?

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 82 points 2 days ago (3 children)

We're gonna rediscover all kinds of wonderful words. Polio is a good one, too. Hey, with global warming, we ought to be able to brew up some malaria all across Trump country, right?

You know what, let's just not have doctors. That will cut healthcare costs really fucking quick.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Well, when you stop enforcing licenses, anyone can be a doctor!

[–] No_Eponym@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 days ago

let's just not have doctors

Why not? Bunch of liberal elites anyway. Probably Jewish or turning kids trans or something too.

Instead, for a small monthly donation, Pastor Jim can write you a prescription for Jesus! If that doesn't work, you were a sinner anyway and God wanted you dead. Perfect system, praise be, onwards to greatness America! /S

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 12 points 2 days ago

Hey! I live in trump country, and I voted against him all 3 times as well as his down-ballot cronies.

That said, bring on the malaria. It sounds better than living in trump country.

[–] theherk@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Wanna see all your countrymen die of cured diseases that end in “ids”?

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 74 points 2 days ago

We had one good option, one bad option, and one stupid option.

And somehow ended up with both bad and stupid.

[–] kirbowo808@kbin.melroy.org 41 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This is honestly a complete disaster Genuinely can’t believe its actually happening tbh. 2016, but ten times worse.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 53 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think the first term was actually traumatic and we've spent four years trying to put it behind us, now he's back and prepared, with the whole government at his command for at least 2 years. The long term damage is going to be atrocious in every sense of the word.

I'm fucking heartbroken

[–] kirbowo808@kbin.melroy.org 3 points 1 day ago

Oh same here tbh. We honestly have learned nothing at all from the last time Trump was in power and yet, I’m far more disappointed that my generation (whose supposed to be at the forefront of change) did absolutely nothing to stop this from happening. I’m honestly so angry and disappointed at the same time.

[–] PlantDadManGuy@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago

At least back in 2016 I could forgive people for just being plain ignorant and not understanding the consequences of their votes, but this time around I really think people are just hateful racist bastards.

[–] terraborra@lemmy.nz 41 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This bodes well for everyone if bird flu makes the jump to humans.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] terraborra@lemmy.nz 15 points 2 days ago

Yeah I’ve been following it and seen that it’s crossed into pigs and onto a pig farmer. CDC’s work is going to become even harder under the new administration.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (3 children)

One of the few saving Graces of this whole thing, is that I know deep down Trump is going to turn on this guy. There's no way he keeps him around. He served his purpose and now he's going to dump him.

[–] _thebrain_@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

A lot of Mr brain worms plans would seriously cut into the profits of major pharmaceuticals and agricultural behemoths that are major donors of Trump's campaign. I can't imagine them allowing trump to cut into their profits like that.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 hours ago

I can't imagine them allowing trump to cut into their profits like that.

Yeah, that's not how the dynamic between business and government works under fascism. I would advise you to read about Germany and Italy in the late 1930s/early 1940s

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm not sure that vaccines are actually profitable without subsidies. They'd probably rather milk their cash cows like price-gouged insulin and trendy medications like ozempic.

[–] _thebrain_@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago

Afaik profit is profit whether it's from subsidies or sales. On top of that, the government gave them grants to develop said vaccines, so r&d was highly discounted... Production of most vaccines as way cheap compared to r&d, so I doubt there is ever any "selling for a loss". Combine that with state mandates requiring kids to get vaccines before attending school (I'm not saying this is bad... Public health is a good thing), and you have a captive customer base.

Ironically that is trumptards only saving grace. He’s so nacissistic and disloyal he discards his sycophant followers when they are no longer useful.

[–] WaxiestSteam69@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I look for Trump to turn on everyone. It's the only thing he's consistently done his entire life.

[–] LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago

What a time to be on an immunosuppressant.

[–] randon31415@lemmy.world 29 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I think it is as good time as any to introduce everyone to the four theives vinegar collective. Their diy drug making system is only as safe as the people using it are careful - but if kennedy running the show, probably be as safe as corporate.

Thanks, I'm usually better about that. Fixed in my comment as well.

[–] wolfpack86@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Very few manufacturing facilities for the US would not also carry European approval. Generally speaking you can expect the medication to be as safe as it was before.

Obviously some firms perform better than others at inspections and not all drugs are in all markets... But it won't be the wild west.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 hours ago

Why do you have any reason to believe this would stay the same if we remove regulation entirely? Makes no sense.

[–] clutchtwopointzero@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Americans will be required to produce health certificates to travel everywhere else

I hope so. No one should travel without proper protection. It's like not using a condom with people you don't know. You may hurt them, or they may hurt you. And by hurt I mean murder them and their families.

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

I really hope all this will hunt the garbage that voted for the orange f*ck. Even if they have the IQ of a pumpkin, they may get this.
