Terminal in swedish is slutstation

[–] clark@midwest.social 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Is it? Unless terminal is another word for final station.

[–] Kacarott@aussie.zone 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes, terminal means "end" or similar. Eg. "Terminal cancer", "the airport terminal" etc. same root word as"terminate"

[–] Rubanski@lemm.ee 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And are termites the "enders"?

[–] Iapar@feddit.org 11 points 2 months ago

No, the "sluts".

[–] umbraroze@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Computer terminal is literally called a terminal because it's the thing on the user side end of the long long wire that starts from the big big computer.

One of those things that make a lot more sense if you think hard of the history.

[–] Malgas@beehaw.org 7 points 2 months ago

Well, it is where everybody gets off…

[–] dQw4w9WgXcQ@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago
[–] AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 3 points 2 months ago

Time for me to go to the terminal.

[–] Deestan@lemmy.world 75 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Certified Professionals: "Fagfolk"

[–] Wxnzxn@lemmy.ml 32 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh, like German "Fach" then, I assume? That does actually make sense

[–] Deestan@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Yep. Same word, just mutated slightly.

[–] Deconceptualist@lemm.ee 14 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Yeah I feel like 80% of Norwegian is just mutated German.

e.g. Tier --> dyr (animal)

[–] deus@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

Germanic languages do be like that sometimes

[–] Kacarott@aussie.zone 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

There's also quite a bit of English, eg.

Window -> vindu

Leather (animal skin) -> skinn

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 7 points 2 months ago

That's the other way. English got a lot of words from the vikings.

[–] ziggurat@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

There is a word for that, it is cognate. When words from different languages stem from the same word

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 48 points 2 months ago (5 children)

The word fag needs to be taken back from the haters. My first encounter with it was in the context of cigarettes.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 32 points 2 months ago (1 children)

While I applaud those who can, it's too traumatic for me personally.

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

That’s fair

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 2 months ago

I mean, queer people use about/among themselves sometimes. Over time it might get more reclaimed like "queer" was

But it will take time, either way, and some people will never be okay with the word, as they have too much bad association with it, just the same as with "queer"

I sometimes use it for comedic value, though relatively rarely. I avoid using it among people who I don't know well, though

[–] Toribor@corndog.social 9 points 2 months ago

"Smoking a pack of fags" can be a bad idea or a truly horrible one depending on where you live.

[–] Thann@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 months ago

It refers to obnoxious harley riders

[–] c0smokram3r@midwest.social 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Always reminds me this clip from SouthPark S13e12 "The F Word" 😅😂🤣

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I hate South Park. It’s occasionally funny, this is not one of those occasions

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

We've had the plan for taking back the word laid out for a long time.

It's not the fart (speed) that kills you it's the smell (crash). A Norwegian English joke.

[–] SteveXVII@pawb.social 1 points 2 months ago

~~Dutch~~ Norwegian isn't real.

[–] NostraDavid@programming.dev 8 points 2 months ago

Barely related, but in Dutch, it's called "Informatica", which is a much better name than "Computer Science". "Computer Science" is like called Astronomy "Telescope Science".

[–] Sparky@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Speed bumps in Norwegian are translated to "fartshumper" :)

[–] Malgas@beehaw.org 5 points 2 months ago

As Norwegian race driver Petter Solberg once said, "it's not the fart that kills you, it's the smell".

"Smell", of course, being Norwegian for crash.

[–] niktemadur@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Anyone remember that mid-00s comic, Everybody Loves Eric Raymond? The one about Linus Torvalds getting antsy upon learning of Sony busted for installing rootkits on user's machines, running up to his room? Google "ELER" with "Sony rootshit".

"Strange behavior... even for a European code fag."

[–] colin@lemmy.uninsane.org 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

link for the lazy

unless not linking is part of the joke somehow in which case tell me off & i'll delete this.

[–] niktemadur@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Haha, no, it's fine, and thank you for bringing up a great point that I've never really thought about before, it's like there was a blind spot in my autopilot when I wrote that here, just going for what felt easiest at the very moment.

It's just that I'm on a tablet that tends towards the older side, I'm really quick at those things on the computer, but on the tablet the formatting process is just a little too formal for me with a finger and a touchscreen and apps that are regularly sluggish to respond.

Yeah, on the computer I can make a meme here and there, edit photos, etc, but on the tablet... all I can do comfortably is read, write, and the most basic copy-pasting of images on messaging apps like Signal. And I'd never really stopped, turned and regarded that before.

EDIT: ideally, instead of linking, it would be great if we could display the image directly here in the thread, and maybe on the computer I could try and find a way, but I mostly use the tablet nowadays. And if it's too much of a server load for Lemmy to allow that, I can live without that "luxury".
