Is it just me or have the prices of commodities also been skyrocketing

[–] FluffyPotato@lemm.ee 67 points 8 months ago (5 children)

It's not just you. The price of literally everything is skyrocketing.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 35 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Well, except sky rockets, which have been cheaper to launch.

Something Something AFTERNOON DELIGHT!

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 12 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Turns out you can simply keep raising prices and the idiot consumers (us) will keep buying.

The dumb assholes need food to survive.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 11 points 8 months ago

And housing too, the losers!

Rice and beans is still ultra cheap. So, I agree a family needs more than that to "live well" they don't need more than that to "survive"

Edit why downvote?

1kg of rice was 0.90 euros 5 years ago, now it's 2.40 euros.

One of favourite cheap meals is my vegetarian chilli recipe but about 5 years ago all the ingredients cost me about 5 euros for a whole week of food, now it's about 15 euros. It's still affordable but the cost of everything is still skyrocketing.

Gotta get your rice in bulk. I recommend Asian or Indian markets, they often sell huge bags of delicious rice. I bet you can get back towards your old rate

[–] FluffyPotato@lemm.ee 2 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Hah, this is Estonia, the most Asian market we have is one shelf of Asian food in the largest grocery stores.

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Well, somebody is selling bulk

[–] FluffyPotato@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago

Oh, yea but those are the bulk store prices. Do people buy non-perishable good any other way?

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 months ago (2 children)

How well rounded is that nutrionally? I already have a big bag of rice...

[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 5 points 8 months ago

You will survive. Throw some milk and some greens in there and you are well on your way. If youre actually in this spot, I have more poor as fuck, but need calories for manual labor tips, but don't wanna preach

Lentils, chickpeas, quinoa. The latter is pricier, but has all the animo acids you need without meat in your diet, which is really, really pricey. Costco generally has 5lb bags in the $10 range if you have a membership.

... quinoa. The latter is pricier, but has all the animo acids you need

That's called a "complete protein", and many combinations of food result in complete protein, including rice and beans. Lentils and chickpeas is probably complete without the need for quinoa.

I'm from the future and bananas are still $0.29¢/pound in 2024. I was surprised that fruits and vegetables still exist in supermarkets.

Alrighty, that said I'm adding bananas and strawberries to my cricket protein smoothies now

[–] Rodeo@lemmy.ca 1 points 8 months ago

They're 90¢/lb where I am. Damn.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

When we're at wits' end, remember that it costs nothing to sit and do nothing.

Except that it will cost your health & sanity.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Everything except Arizona Iced Tea, Costco Hotdogs, and weed.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago (1 children)

weed

Unless you live in a legal state.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 3 points 8 months ago

That's fucked up dude. Even the most expensive legal weed is still around the same for a gram in my prinvince. It the lack of bulk discounts that is a problem.

But being federally legal the illegal markets are still great.

You will own nothing and you will be happy.

It includes mouseover text (if on mobile, just tap the image) and an extra panel (push the red button)

Maybe next time you link to it?

The end of hope of accumulation of wealth has ~~driven~~ liberated a lot of people from the need of a daily grind. Thats why we see the silent resignation, the negative responses to RTO and the "lack" of workforce. This is actually not a bad thing, if only the filthy-wealthy weren't activelly working to destroy olthe only planet we can live on

[–] mcmoor@bookwormstory.social 3 points 8 months ago

People in poor countries are sometimes happier only because they can't sell their happiness
