Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

I have never encountered a single smoker who understands that the Heat/AC unit built into the wall of a hotel room is actually a giant hole that pulls air and smoke into it.

I frequently have hotel rooms where some marijuana smoker is smoking outside their room and then suddenly my whole room fills up with weed smell.

Also, I have been at red lights and the person next to me is smoking and then my car fills up with the smell of weed. It happens if the windows are open or with the Heat or AC on.

I actually believe the government shouldn't regulate what we do with our bodies but the since marijuana smokers cannot be considerate of other people they shouldn't have the right to take away others rights.

Smoking it in the car is already illegal. Making it illegal in my home isn't going to help you.

This. In my area smoking within 10 feet of access entrances to buildings (both Marijuana and tobacco) is also not allowed, has to be done in designated areas to the side.

10 feet is not going to cut it with pot smoke. You can smell all pot smoke from 10 feet away.

Cigarette smokers are more common and worse.

Here the law is no smoking (anything) within 5m(16ft) of a door, window or fresh air intake. Most places have signs (mandatory can’t expect everyone to know every grill is/isn’t an intake vs say an exhaust) to tell you can’t smoke there.

Yes, but marijuana smoke is much more pungent and travels further. You can smell it from far away and it seems to linger unlike tobacco smoke.

At last, a truly unpopular opinion here.

Bro, I smoke at my house. I live alone on my own property. I agree for the most part about smoking in public, but also, if I want to enjoy a joint in the majesty of nature I don't think I should be precluded from doing so in a way that doesn't harm others. Personally, edibles are better for that purpose. But don't make laws about something because you don't like it. That's fascism. Hit me with hard facts, then you can make some laws. Otherwise it's just another unjustified war on people you don't like.

I don't have a problem with the smell - if anything I love smelling it everywhere. It reminds me that the world can get better.

But people vaping large stinking clouds annoys me, so I can sympathize. I don't think that people should go to jail for annoying others though.

Upvoted for unpopularity!

I don’t do weed anymore, but I like the way it smells.

Always check the star rating before checking into a hotel. The Motel 6 might save you money but guests are more likely to smoke weed outside their room than they are at the Hilton.

I agree with you but then someone else's nasty habit and inconsideration is costing me more money. I'm not costing anyone any money by minding my own business in my hotel room.

[–] carbrewr84@kbin.social 1 points 7 months ago

How is someone else smoking weed costing you money?

As someone in recovery, I totally feel what you're putting down. HOWEVER, most places that have decriminalized/allow recreational already make it illegal to smoke and drive and (typically) public use is also forbidden. Just think of the smell as an unsavory fart or a water treatment plant; it's unpleasant, sticks to the inside of your nose, but passes shortly. Nothing you can do about it but wait for the TEMPORARY unpleasantness to pass.

Having worked in a hotel as well, if that happens just ask for a new room and explain the issue. Most front desk people (even late at night) are more than happy to do what they can to accommodate you.

I get that people don't like the smell of pot and/or cigarettes but is there actual harm from a breath or two of it occasionally? I suspect it is negligible.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 1 points 7 months ago

and your solution to that is... prison?
