There are actually people in the world who put milk in the bowl before the cereal? Why? I'm genuinely curious at the rationale behind it!

[–] CraigeryTheKid@lemm.ee 15 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I, OCCASIONALLY, am one of those people. And to me it makes PERFECT sense.

Most cereal, cereal then milk, hands down.

But what if I want a super crunchy bite of something like frosted flakes, or honey bunches, the entire time I'm eating it?

  • Pour milk first
  • Add one single layer of cereal
  • Enjoy crunchy bite of cereal for every bite
  • Add a fresh layer of cereal
  • Enjoy crunchy bits
  • Repeat until milk gone
[–] variants@possumpat.io 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Why not just leave the milk in the bottle and drink it direct

[–] activ8r@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

This is what confuses me. No one is making these people work so hard. Just have a bowl of dry cereal and a glass of milk.

[–] UrPartnerInCrime@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I was converted to milk first by a kid i was watching. It's better for keeping your cereal harder for longer. If you're a fan of mushy cereal then go milk second so everything gets wet. But if you're a fan of the last bite still being crispy then milk first is the way.

[–] zero_spelled_with_an_ecks@programming.dev 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

If you didn't want soggy cereal, why bother with the milk in the first place?

[–] UrPartnerInCrime@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Sometimes I do just grab a cup and eat my cereal dry. Then I dont Even have to use both hands while on the move, just pour it in my mouth single handed.

Someone's I want some milk though

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

They want more of the protein and fat from the milk as opposed to the sugar and carbs from the cereal.

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

How does that effect the order they go into the bowl though? They would still end up with the same amount of milk and cereal wouldn't they?

[–] nifty@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

IME experience, adding in milk before the cereal fools you into thinking your bowl is fuller, so you add less cereal.

[–] RustyNova@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Most people that put milk first actually warm up the milk in the microwave rather than put it on the stove or something like that. I personally do it because it saves on dishes

As for me, I have another reason. When you run out of cereals, do you put more in another bowl, then transfer the milk in? Obviously not, you just add it on top of the milk, which is the same thing as putting milk first Also, putting hot milk on the cereals sometimes makes them all soggy and I rather have them stay crips

I really don't see how this debate is so heated over which step to start the cycle of cereals eating lol.

[–] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Who the fuck eats cereal with hot milk?!

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

This dude saw the meme and went "I can top that".

[–] RustyNova@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

YOU DON'T EAT CEREAL WITH WARM MILK!? That's genuinely the first time I hear that people eat cereal with cold milk. I tried it once, and it felt soulless.

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I have never in my life met anyone who put hot milk on breakfast cereal lol are you maybe taking about like porridge or cream of wheat? Those are technically kinds of cereal

[–] RustyNova@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

No just some regular cereal like corn flakes or wheat based cereals. And technically I don't put milk on cereal, I put cereal on milk or else they get soggy.

And I hope it's not fridge cold milk, because this seems even worse. All the warmth of a good old breakfast replaced by just cold milk is just so weird

For information, I am french so this might be why we have such a rift in cereal eating culture. And no, I'm not trolling. I'm genuinely doing this when I'm eating cereal. But now I'm wondering, why not warm milk? Is it just because no one tries or just that warming it up worsens the taste?

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I've always eaten cold milk (yes fridge cold, the colder the better) with cereal. If I'm in the mood for a hot breakfast I generally just make something else like toast or oatmeal or eggs and bacon. I realize that you're not trolling, this is just genuinely blowing my mind lol

[–] lowleveldata@programming.dev 3 points 4 months ago

People who live in places with cold winters?

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Hot milk with cereal?!?!!?! 🤢🤢🤢🤮

[–] cley_faye@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Makes you put less cereal if you already filled with milk, so you eat less tasty garbage.

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (2 children)

You could just measure how much you're putting in. Like just put a cup of cereal and then as much milk as you want.

Ultimately anyone can eat their cereal however they want, but adding milk first doesn't actually "make" you do anything lol

[–] tubaruco@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago

if it makes them think they already put more cereal than they atually did, it's completely fine to do. also you wont have to clean up a cup afterwards.

and whats the difference between putting milk before or after anyways? i dont like cereal so im really curious as to why people care

[–] cley_faye@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

It skips the "measure" part, since the bowl itself is of fixed size. But as you said, anyone's free to spend their time however they want.

[–] lowleveldata@programming.dev 1 points 4 months ago

That way you can dip and eat the cereal. I hate fully soaked cereal.

[–] Harpsist@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I heat my milk so I can eat a HOT breakfast like a human being.

I also always eat it at a table to avoid a -1 mood debuff.

Cold cereal? No thanks. I'd rather starve.

[–] XEAL@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago

There are dozens of us! DOZENS!

[–] LoreleiSankTheShip@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 months ago

Don't worry, Randy's going to help you with that sooner or later

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

I'd laugh, but I can't since this is more nuanced than it seems at first glance.

Pros of cereal first:

  • Accurately gauge the amount of cerial
  • Controlling quantity of milk pouring is very easy.

Pros of milk first:

  • There's always enough milk to soak the cerial at the time of pouring cerial.

This post however misses the true way to maximise crunchyness which is to have a pool of milk and pour only smaller quantities of cerial and immediately eat them.

So to conclude, this post misses the mark on many accounts because of oversimplification of the subject and reactions should be moderated accordingly.

However, it is very representative of having the ocean as the pool of liquid and dropping the dry in it. Therefore I believe this is worthy of my upvote and stamp of approval.

[–] Duranie@literature.cafe 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

My boyfriend bought his kids special cereal bowls that have a divider in the middle. Cereal on one side, milk on the other. Spoon the dry cereal, dip into the milk side.

My old ass feels like either that's too much trouble, or maybe I just don't appreciate cereal that much lol .

[–] root_beer@midwest.social 2 points 4 months ago

I’m with you, that seems tedious as hell

[–] RustyNova@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)
  • as I discovered, this only applies in case where cold milk is used, and not warm milk
[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I should rewrite the post to remedy this gross negligence.

[–] Toes@ani.social 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What about the people who dump out the milk after eating the cereal?

[–] XEAL@lemm.ee 6 points 4 months ago

They have a reserved place in hell right next to the people who just lick Doritos and then throw them away.

[–] tubaruco@lemm.ee 6 points 4 months ago

does it count if i dont put the cereal in, and just drink the milk?

[–] Branch_Ranch@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Only reason to put the milk in first is when theres only a little milk left. Then you just add cereal until its right.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] tubaruco@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago

the problem is too little milk, not too little space to put the milk

[–] nfsu2@feddit.cl 2 points 4 months ago

I would argue that those people are the ones dropping the corpse, they are just psychopaths.

[–] moistclump@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I put the milk in and then just a handful of cereal at a time so it don’t get soggy.

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Cereal > milk > cereal to eat leftover milk with, trying to perfectly balance until the last bite.

The only acceptable way that you can have cereal after milk is if you already ate a bowl and came back for seconds without drinking all the milk

[–] Peptoshotz@lemmy.world 0 points 4 months ago

Pour a bowl of milk and put the jug back in the fridge so it's not sitting out. Then add cereal once you get set up in front of the TV or whatever else you're trying to do while you're eating.
