Shaun of the Dead. The kickoff of the Corenetto trilogy has layers that reward repeated viewings.

[–] TheWozardOfIz@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

Love when they start throwing the records at the Zombies. My favorite scene.

~~Go to the Winchester~~, have a nice cold pint, and wait for this all to blow over was my ‘Rona strategy

[–] jesse@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Shaun of the Dead, easily. This is one of my annual re-watch films.

28 Days Later. It was unlike any other movie like it when I randomly came across it on tv

[–] BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one 5 points 1 year ago

It still is. Nothing hits like London depopulated and one dude wtf-ing for 10 minutes.

[–] CynAq@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

I watched it in theater on its first week!

It was glorious. Still my favorite, hands down.

[–] PigglyWiggly@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The eeriness of the deserted streets of London makes for one of the best opening scenes ever!

[–] TheWozardOfIz@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Definitely. It also may have been my first real exposure to Cillian Murphy. Became one of my favorite actors.

[–] BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Army of Darkness

Incidentally also my favorite skeleton movie.

[–] PigglyWiggly@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Dang, a classic I haven’t seen yet. For sure going in the list.

[–] Brawndo@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

And this is my... BOOMSTICK!

Going to need some twinkies if I’m going to rewatch Zombieland!

Arguable if it's a zombie movie or a virus movie, but The Crazies (2010) was excellent.

[–] hrimfaxi_work@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

Have you seen the 1973 original directed by George Romero? Also very good!

[–] evil_ostrich@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I have a soft spot for the original Romero trilogy, and I dig the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead and the 2004 Dawn of the Dead.

It's my favorite too. One of the first zombie movies I remember going to see in theaters. The crowd was great and laughing a lot. The opening alone was awesome.

[–] Bobo_Palermo@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

Return of the Living Dead

[–] parallax@local106.com 6 points 1 year ago

Shawn of the Dead. A romantic comedy using the context of a horror file. It is brilliant.

[–] saplingtree@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Unironically the first resident evil live action movie. I say this as someone who watched all the classics.
I'm not sorry.

[–] wesker@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago

I will personally endorse Resident Evil.

Pontypool was so good. It's about a radio station during the zombie apocalypse. So they're torn between reporting and staying safe.

That movie is insanely and hilariously gory. It is so gloriously over the top gross but also funny as hell.

[–] autumn@reddthat.com 4 points 1 year ago (3 children)

World War Z!

Completely unrealistic but the way zombie hordes are shown stampeding is amazing.

[–] breadsmasher@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

shame it diverged soo hard from the book

[–] autumn@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I only saw the movie so i never knew what i was missing lol

[–] Gerbaire@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

Oh boy, definitely read the book. It's one of the most well thought out and realistic pieces of zombie fiction I've ever experienced. The only other one that I'd put on the same level is This Book is Full of Spiders (seriously dude, don't touch it) by David Wong, which is the sequel to John Dies at the End.

[–] Tigbitties@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'm with you. It's a zombie detective. Awesome!

[–] eraitch@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

That pile up against the wall in Israel - yikes!

[–] kronicmage@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

Not a movie but I was a big fan of All of us are Dead on Netflix (except the last 10 minutes)

[–] Conman_Signor@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] zalack@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't remember much from that movie besides loving it.

[–] Conman_Signor@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Oh don't get me wrong, I loved it but dammit it tugged at heart

[–] RandomStickman@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

I have a soft spot for Juan of the Dead. It sounds like a cheap knock off/parody (it kinda is) but it also has a lot of heart in it.

[–] Allan8795@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Dawn of the dead 2004 is my absolute favorite, has immense repeat value for me.

A close second would be french movie The Horde (2009). It has one of my favorite zombie moment in a movie where one of the protagonist fights till his death chopping / killing zombies on top of a car.

I love so many zombie movies but my favorite will always be the one that popped my zombie cherry. Dawn of the dead 1978.

[–] Dave_r@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago

I still like I am Ledgend

[–] Flyspeck@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Poultrygeist

[–] Lauchs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Kind of a cheating answer but One Cut of the Dead. It's more a movie about making zombie movie, but the movie they're making is a single take short movie.

Really fun stuff.

[–] justooon@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

One I don't see get mentioned often is #alive! Really enjoyable with classic zombie premise in a city setting. Went in blind on the recommendation of a coworker and had a great time

[–] CorrodedCranium@lemmy.fmhy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm a big fan of Zombie from 1979

[–] PigglyWiggly@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

I remember seeing a VHS of this for rent back when they were still a thing lol. I’ll have to track down a copy!

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 year ago

If you can get it with the deleted scenes, Zombie Strippers. That movie is a lot better than it has rights to.

[–] hrimfaxi_work@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)
[–] PigglyWiggly@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ooh, I’ve never scene this. Going on the list!

Let me know what you think!

It's a 70s malaise slow burn, so be prepared for that kind of energy when you fire it up 🤗
