Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

Lemmy really needs something like topics, categories or tags you can opt-in or -out of. There are just too many communities to subscribe one by one and if I browse everything theres so much super boring niche stuff, like some Go library releasing version 0.02-beta. I mean that's nice for those 5 Go programmers waiting for that, i guess, but they are probably subscribed to it anyway.

I calles this ages ago. The federated nature is counter to community growth and discoverability.

Lemmy as a platform needs support built in for this problem.

[–] mihnt@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

It's a problem in browsers too. I'm constantly running across broken links, previews, and other small things that really hinder it. I'm used to it as I've been around many forums as they were coming up. The general public for sure won't like when they come here and they see a link to content but, wait, there's really no link or no preview and it's content they really want to see.

[–] virku@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago (3 children)

Even that is better than the massive waves of posts in languages I don't understand.

[–] MisterFrog@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You can change this via your account in your instance (not all apps have these settings)

I leave Undetermined, English and German.

I only ever get English and German 👍

[–] virku@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Thank you! I didn't know about this setting.

[–] kratoz29@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago

I suffer from that in Mastodon because I follow hashtags, but in Lemmy? No way, all I see is English in Everything.

Also I have more than 800 subscribed communities so I have a better understandable feed.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I've stuck with sorting by "local" and that seems to work for me. At least on Connect for Lemmy

[–] SnuggleSnail@ani.social 12 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I am new here and I do not understand how to find the stuff I want to see. So far I blocked a lot of porn, though.

[–] LazaroFilm@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (3 children)

I have two accounts. One has NSFW off and the other on.

[–] Sphks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Too bad there is no option for "NFSW only"

[–] scytale@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

I remember someone attempted to create an instance to centralize all content from nsfw instances so your All feed is explicitly nsfw and you don’t need to subscribe. Dunno what happened but I think the instance is gone now.

[–] LazaroFilm@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

lemmynsfw.com and pornlemmy.com do that.

[–] scytale@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Not exactly. When you join either of those instances, you’ll only see their hosted content by default and you’ll have to manually subscribe to communities on the other. The instance I was talking about was intended to federate with all known nsfw instances only. So when you browse All, it’s strictly only communities from nsfw instances giving you access to purely nsfw content.

I do this too, but also use separate apps. Dont want to open the app after forgetting to switch accounts.

[–] ARk@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago

Until some communities stop marking their shit as NSFW. Not everyone wants to see that MMA bodies fetish shit in the middle of checking news.

[–] squiblet@kbin.social 3 points 11 months ago

I browse an All > New to find communities I like. There’s not really so much content that it’s overwhelming, unlike if you did that with a huge site like reddit.

What’s with the big and blue username?

[–] Speculater@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago
[–] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Theres more apps than users. I mean I'm grateful for the apps tho

[–] anonymoose@lemmy.ca 14 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I hope at some point more people start contributing to the core lemmy codebase as well. I don't suppose there's that many rust devs out there, but I think that would have much more of an impact in the long run.

[–] Fal@yiffit.net 15 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I'm pretty sure Lemmy is like 95% software devs

[–] anonymoose@lemmy.ca 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Devs, yes, but I think very few of us program in rust :)

[–] Fal@yiffit.net 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] anonymoose@lemmy.ca 2 points 11 months ago

lol, can't disagree

[–] JCreazy@midwest.social 4 points 11 months ago

I must be the 5%

[–] 0x4E4F@infosec.pub 3 points 11 months ago

Mhm, agreed. Way too many apps, not enough PRs to main codebase.

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

And the users too.

No, they just sell lemonade. But it's cold, and it's fresh, and it's all home-made.

Call me a fuddy-duddy if you like, but I just browse Lemmy in a browser via the default interface, on both desktop and mobile. And this has not yet caused my spleen to spontaneously catch fire or anything.

I'm really not convinced everything needs to be an app.

[–] MajesticSloth@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago

Fuddy-duddy.

(You said I could)

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 6 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

For some reason, I can not log into any instance of Lemmy on FireFox mobile. No errors or anything; I log in, it goes through reloading the page after submitting my credentials, and then I am not logged in. :/

Desktop FireFox is fine. I do have problems with the posts (but not the page containing them) loading when trying to view it through Steam's overlay browser though.

[–] drasticpotatoes@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I can log in only after deleting and retyping the final characters on my login and password. Apparently it has a problem with password managers.

This coupled with it randomly logging me out has forced me to use an app instead, however.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

It works for me on Firefox mobile on Android. Some kind of extension issue for you, maybe? I dunno.

[–] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 3 points 11 months ago

I like endless doomscrolling

[–] Bongles@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

I used it until boost released and it was perfectly fine. Losing boost was why I left reddit to begin with though.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 2 points 11 months ago

Props to the Lemmy-ui devs for designing a mobile capable site that's light and works well.

I use Jerboa but I have to switch to browser to view other Lemmy server links but it's seamless, and better than what I can say for 95% of modern mobile websites.

[–] mrnotoriousman@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The mobile version of kbin is great. I don't feel it needs an app although there could always be qol improvements

[–] livus@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago

@mrnotoriousman yeah it's aesthetically pleasing too.

Been a happy Boost for Lemmy user for 2 months now, before that was using Jerboa.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 5 points 11 months ago

I heard about one called Raccoon being made and now I am waiting for that to have a download all for the name alone.

[–] ooklamok@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Are there any apps that have swiping between posts?

[–] Chadus_Maximus@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

I have no idea what that means.
