World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

How the hell can you be a chain smoker and run a marathon?!
It's China...
Smoking a filtered cigarette might be better air quality than just breathing the air...
The winner of the 1904 marathon was given rat poison. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletics_at_the_1904_Summer_Olympics_–_men%27s_marathon
Entire story is wild.
For podcast people the dollop also did an episode on this olympics. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KFLjcX163WI
I read the whole article. I wish Wikipedia articles had a comment section just or this article. What a wild ride.
Those are...surprisingly good marathon times, considering.
It's a stimulant.
What, the rat poison?
Maybe but the guy was wrecked pretty much afterward and barely even finished. Could hardly walk for part of it.
I see, that's too much then. I mean it's primarily a poison but I think it's from the same family as nicotine, interestingly enough.
Right? I can’t even finish one.
Something about the professional, detached tone combined with the absolute slapstick insanity of the article's content makes this perfect comedy
Holy hell this is definitely worth a read 😂
That was amazing. Thanks for sharing.
You should give the podcast a listen, I forgot the 1904 olympics was 7 months long.
A relayed video that's worth a watch for the sheer insanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myM5SY1mHoA

I knew a guy in the army who would smoke a cigarette right before and directly after his 2 mile PT test run. Dude would run it in under 12 minutes. Some people are just built differently than us normal humans.
Nicotine is a potent stimulant. If you don't smoke all the time and get tarred lungs then I could see why that would be very bit official. like running a marathon on Adderall to a lesser degree
Had a whole gang of dudes like this in the Marines too, you said they're just built different, I say they're just nicotine addicts.
There's like a whole thing with marathon and ultramarathon runners just shitting themselves while running. There's something physiological that happens when you push the body that much. So I'm not so surprised that "pit stops" in the bushes were an issue that required a ruling.
Im salty about the smoking guy though: Justice for Chain-Smoking Chen! China has the world's only living train and they treat him like this!
Every once and a while you hear about a "serial pooper" in the news...
Some idiot that runs a lot everyday, and just starts shitting in random people's yards then running away.
And everytime they're caught, they always act like they don't understand why everyone is mad.
They're so wrapped up in competitive running, they assume shitting in someone's front yard is totally cool.
Someone just got caught on video doing it at the last Boston Marathon
https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a43646468/boston-runner-takes-a-pit-stop-in-yard/
But my city had some lady who was doing it everyday recently. She ran a new route everyday and would just drop deuces anywhere in broad daylight then sprint away, so it was hard to catch her.. I think they may have done DNA analysis on her droppings, because of course she wasn't bagging up either.
火车人!
Fortunately, he was not guilty of that. The article was just listing more rules from the rulebook.
Magnets?
I hope that's an American Dad reference...
He was chasing them with cocaine.
