I wish I knew how to hack my hearing aids. They aren't even that bad, it's just minor functionality like managing Bluetooth pairings and the ability to create custom setting names so I'm not using "church mode" in meetings

I'd say to jailbreak your early bionics before they firmware upgrade out the exploits, but the risk of bricking your brain is probably a bit worse than a phone.

I'll still fucking do it out of spite, though.

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 30 points 5 days ago (1 children)

bricking

Not sure if that's a correct term for the brain since it's not a hard object like a phone, router, etc..
How about puddinging?

[–] TheRealLinga@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 days ago

Or puddling, as in melting le brain

[–] SalaciousBCrumb@lemy.lol 84 points 5 days ago (2 children)

That’s why we use FOSS body parts.

Really stupid comic.

Even a 1:1 rip-off is still preferable if it's FOSS.

Not to mention, we don't need to re-invent the wheel every time. A photo editor for example doesn't need to offer innovative new features to differentiate itself from Light Room, it needs to offer the tools generally used by photographers and not be Adobe.

In fact, the more like adobe tools it is, the more likely it is to be adopted by adobe users. One of the most often cited reasons for not switching to linux by individuals (ie not businesses) is "I need Photoshop/clip studio paint/premiere". Literally those exact tools but FOSS would bring more artists to linux.

Is this coming panel implying that obsidian is FOSS?

[–] universalfriend@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

moreso trying to underline the potential for stagnation the pinned tools may lead to; many of the would-be pioneers of genuine innovation seem to use extremely bloated and nonFOSS tools

Bruh they abandoned libretina2 and I can't install libretina3 due to package conflicts 😭 What do I do?

[–] InnerScientist@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You are about to do something potentially harmful. To continue type in the phrase 'Yes, do as I say!'

[–] amon@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Can't see anything trying to install screen reader

Thanks, that's actually the article I was looking for.

We're literally living in a cyberpunk dystopia.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 4 days ago

a boring cyberpunk dystopia

[–] poplargrove@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

And another: https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/26/24255074/former-jockey-michael-straight-exoskeleton-repair-battery

Michael Straight, a former jockey paralyzed from the waist down, was left unable to walk for two months after the company behind his $100,000 exoskeleton refused to fix a battery issue ... "I was told they stopped working on any machine that was 5 years or older,”

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

We really need standardization in batteries. I usually think that about ebikes, but this is another good example.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Okay as a Middle Eastern guy I have absolutely zero respect for Iraq war veterans so honestly I couldn't give a shit about this guy specifically, but from a realpolitik perspective isn't this just bad for morale?

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

TBH I think at this point hating the VA is so universal that it's become a group morale building exercise...

[–] SolacefromSilence@fedia.io 2 points 4 days ago

Doesn't matter, had war.

[–] adam_y@lemmy.world 35 points 5 days ago (1 children)

We don't even allow autonomy of the flesh, I suspect the chrome is going to be subscription only.

[–] zurohki@aussie.zone 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Corporations lobby to defend their products, so I can imagine people swapping out flesh for artificial parts because you can control your own artificial uterus without permission from the government.

[–] adam_y@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

As always, the wealthy will sidestep the horror.

[–] Remotedeck@discuss.tchncs.de 22 points 5 days ago

I want robot parts as much as the next guy but bodily autonomy is crucial.

[–] Omega_Jimes@lemmy.ca 19 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Isn't this basically what all early cyberpunk boils down to?

[–] Xanthrax@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, but also Japan is cool

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 4 days ago

except ironically the visuals are more taiwan

[–] weeeeum@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Yeah this part kind of confused me. I feel like japanese stuff is just shoehorned into everything for no reason. Especially cyberpunk type things

[–] Omega_Jimes@lemmy.ca 20 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Man, in the eighties, the rapid development of Japan technologically and in corporate culture, we were convinced everyone was going to be working for some branch of Mitsubishi.

It was actually scary how fast they were developing tech, and how fast it was overcoming domestic appliances.

[–] Xanthrax@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

You should watch the new Wallace and Gromit movie!

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 19 points 4 days ago

It's one of those things you kinda had to be there for. Japan used to be practically synonymous with new tech, and now it's just been baked into the aesthetic of the genre.

[–] Xanthrax@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

It's because of the crowded neon advertisements and the vertical streets. It plays into the whole fear of the US being taken over by a foreign government, as well. They're also known for their robotics.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

It also serves as an overwhelming and visually interesting tableau of everything vying for your attention to sell you something. All without being recognizable as one of the places like that in America such as times square or the Vegas strip

Johnny Mnemonic is calling.

[–] latenightnoir@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago

That moment when the next step of your species' evolution is turned into an ethical horror show by greedy assholes...

[–] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Ok. I'll return my pacemaker.

[–] zeca@lemmy.eco.br 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

why having a paywall if that scenario enables people to become absolute subservient machines deprived of any subjectivity?
