/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Hating someone off of their race, culture, creed, sexuality, or identity is not remotely acceptable. Mistakes can happen but do your best to respect others.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon' and fuck over our artist friends.

Fun will now commence.

B'elanna would have no idea what Sarsaparilla is. (And apparently the lyrics spell it wrong)

B'elanna would have no idea what Sarsaparilla is.

Serious question, why not? She grew up with a human family.

And if you hang around Tom Paris long enough, you willl become an expert in 20th century pop culture.

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Being with Tom, he would be the one most likely to inform her. She doesn't show much predilection for 19th-20th century culture. Oddly enough, root beer made it forward. No word on sarsparilla.

You bet your britches it’s in the Starfleet replicator database.

So if data (or is it data?) is plural, what is the singular form then? Date? Like in … dating? 😍

What happened to Data's Proctologist?

He started the exam but then... Data rectum.

To see why this is, replace the word "Data" with the word "cows" in a sentence:

"I need to transfer this cows."

No

"I need to transfer these cows." = "I need to transfer these data." - This is correct!

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

now change the word "cows" in your example to "water".

[–] thenextguy@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

I will not buy this record, it is scratched.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works -4 points 15 hours ago

If you did that, then you would be wrong.

[–] satanmat@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Fun fact.

1 fish

10 fish (e.g. all blue fin tuna)

10 fishes (different kinds of fish)

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago

I’m not sure what your point is here. Are you making a joke?

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

“I need to transfer this herd.” = “I need to transfer this data.” - This is correct!

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works -2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

It’s not. Herd is a singular noun, and data is plural.

[–] sin_free_for_00_days@sopuli.xyz 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Actually, data can be singular or plural based on context. I realize English is one bitch of a language.

Either you edited your comment or I misread it

~~Can you back up that claim with any…DATA, my good chum?~~

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

I don't see the edit indicator on it so I think you misread it.

collective nouns are like "team" or "group", they're happy to be "a team" or "one group"

data doesn't work like that, people say "a data point", or "one piece/item of data". (because datum is almost a dead word)

it's more accurate to say data is a mass noun, a. k.a. an uncountable noun, like air, sand, rice.

That's beautiful

[–] _bcron@lemmy.world 8 points 16 hours ago

Not pictured: that one guy that said "you probably meant to say datum" (he's in 4 pieces in a tree)

I love how this medieval knight decided to use a recently invented folding lawn chair to do battle with his opponent.

Who do data like they're data
