MODERATORS

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s open acknowledgement that he and his wife used fertility treatments to conceive their two children and his candid discussions about that generated one of the most moving moments during a rally in Glendale, Arizona, when people chanted the name of his firstborn daughter, Hope.

The positive reaction to the candidate’s discussion of the topic confirms the thumbs-up that Vice President Kamala Harris got for choosing her running mate from every faction of the Democratic Party — from moderates such as Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va.; progressives such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.; and even erstwhile conservative Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va., who left the party this year.

But Tim and Gwen Walz also deserve positive attention for the way they’ve discussed their son, Gus, who came into the national spotlight thanks to a piece in People magazine, about his nonverbal learning disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. That makes him double-neurodiverse.

"Double-neurodiverse"? Look I'm all for more acceptance and understanding of me and my ND homies, but I'm pretty sure you only get the buff effect once no matter how many conditions with that flag you have; it doesn't stack.

[–] Sanguine@lemmy.world 38 points 3 weeks ago

Lol @ referring to it as the buff 🤣

[–] ValenThyme@reddthat.com 30 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

the suicide rates for some comorbidities do have an additive effect though. the debuffs stack.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 9 points 3 weeks ago

And many are on a spectrum. Its more complex than just stacking or independent of each other. Some may be linked traits that we dont understand yet.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.ca 23 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Two separate ND diagnoses, but yeah I agree this doesn't make it double.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 28 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Yes, if someone is pregnant with twins, they are stil pregnant. Not double pregnant. It’s more to handle but it’s not a seperate pregnancy.

[–] RaspberryJam@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

What an elegant analogy!

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

But it does mean that the meat mech has double occupancy more akin to Pacific Rim, rather than a single pilot design akin to Battletech.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Meat mech mom could be a band name.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

Sounds like a grunge band name circa 2003.

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

...I thing double-extra pregnant is amazing, and love it.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago

Double extra pregnant is the last week and when youre overdue waiting....

[–] Sanguine@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Maybe the second diagnosis isn't multiplicative.

[–] Caesium@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

gotta min max my ND buffs yaknow

[–] Lexam@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 weeks ago

Nah, being non verbal is it's own extra challenge.

[–] iamtrashman1312@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, right? I have a diagnoses both mental and physical that qualify me as "disabled," but I haven't seen a box I get to tick anywhere yet that says "super disabled"

[–] eee@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago

If you get a super disabled parking tag, you can push away cars with disabled tags from disabled parking lots and use it yourself

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

It's the other end of the spectrum from "extremely normal"

[–] Crikeste@lemm.ee 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I actually think it depends on order and priority 🤓

Jokes aside, I think it’s a fine term given the large differences between the two forms of ND he has.

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Fine, but I wanna be super mega doubleplus extra neuro-ultra-diverse (/s, in absence of a trollface emoji 😂)

[–] Crikeste@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I use 3 mana to cast Dyslexia on your Mental Faculty

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

In my experience, people with multiple disabilities (MS + UC for instance) call themselves "twice blessed."

It's humorous, if that's unclear.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

It’s great when you melt cheese between the layers. I prefer to add onions as well for extra crunch and flavor.

[–] ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com 71 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

It's another article that shows Walz as a good guy who isn't here to play power games and politics - honestly, he would be catnip to rural voters if Fox News didn't exist.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

Give him time. He everything wholesome to Trumps fucked-up bloodshed and vengeance horseshit

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Seeing what shit's like in the rural south, I'm not so sure that good guys that don't want to play power games is what actually sells-politically--in rural areas.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, it's what they claim they want... and then they elect a daddy's money billionaire playboy reality TV host asshole who's been married multiple times to immigrants. Words don't mean shit.

However, I'm unsure how much of this is due to the effect of Fox and how much is genuine. Can they think for themselves or are they just doing what they're told?

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah in rural Ohio they want a carpet bagger that’s on their side not some genuine person who just wants what’s best for everyone

[–] ultramaven@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

All I think of every time he speaks is Henry Wallace

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 41 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's great Walz is exceeding standards, it sucks that they're this low.

And I'm pretty sure the plural for Walz isn't "Walzes"

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 20 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

And I'm pretty sure the plural for Walz isn't "Walzes"

No, I would say that is correct.

What if the Walzes' favorite dances are waltzes?

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Tim is actually a ballroom dance enthusiast, and designed his own training apparatus to help people learn to dance without a partner and without taking up any floorspace. They sell them as Walz' Waltzes Wallses.

[–] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This guy just keeps getting perfecter

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

If walls could talk, that would be what the wall says.

[–] Fosheze@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Did you really just say "if walls could talk" in a thread about a walz with a nonverbal learning disorder?

~Just a joke if that isn't clear~

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 2 points 3 weeks ago

I was going for the “wall says” / Walzes, and didn’t realize till much later that the “if walls could talk” was even a thing.

[–] zaph@sh.itjust.works 30 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Seeing Gus last night made me tear up every time the camera went to him. He was so proud of his dad.

[–] Dkarma@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Same. I'm getting emotional just thinking about how frigging happy that kid was to see his dad and hero in the spotlight finally getting the attention he deserves.

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Huh, I just thought their son wanted to not be in the spotlight and they were honoring his wishes.

[–] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

this whole election is above my weight class.

i wish i could just vote today and then ignore all of this until the election is over as i am so beneath the people that i want to vote for it makes me feel badly.
