This poster's got red on it.

Holy shit! That felt like only 5 fucking years ago. I feel it now

[–] BobbyNevada@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 month ago

Yeah, we are old now, man. I remember seeing this in the theater. I was just talking about how Netflix used to come in the mail.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Disappointed it's not a sequel 20 years later

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not everything needs a sequel. This is one of those movies that feels better left alone.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world -3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Re release is lamer than nothing tbh.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 1 month ago

Being able to see it on the big screen is a nice feel. Digital upgrade would be nicer but the look might be lost.

While it might be nice to see how the world has changed, I don't want to tarnish this amazing movie's legacy.

[–] variants@possumpat.io 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

it'll be just as good as super troopers 2, or jay and silent bob reboot, or robocop 3

[–] BananaPeal@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

In that case, hell no. 😂

[–] VanHalbgott@lemmus.org 3 points 1 month ago

Alright! Is it coming to my local theater too?

[–] Banichan@dormi.zone 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No good movies left, so we're just rewatching old ones. Again.

I actually really love this current trend of releasing older movies to theaters. There are some that I've always felt I missed out on. I recently got to see Alien in a theater and the experience is so much more vibrant it's hard to describe

Getting to see The Matrix in theatres for a re-release is an experience I'm so grateful for. I wish there was a dedicated revival theatre in my area.

[–] variants@possumpat.io 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

a lot of theaters show old movies on random weekdays

[–] blackluster117@possumpat.io 4 points 1 month ago

Oh yeah, I go to the Fathom events and whatnot, but I'd still like the feel of a dedicated revival theatre. There was an old Laemmle theatre in my hometown that had that vibe. Maybe I'm just chasing the nostalgia...

Time to pop in the DVD/Blu-ray

Why do I see so many news about re-releasing movies? Do people seriously want this? Especially with how expensive movie theaters are? This seems more like the last breaths of a dying branch of entertainment, milking people one last time.

It can be fun to go see a classic movie in theaters with the hindsight of the cultural impact it's had since release. Like I can't go back in time and watch SOTD in theatres on opening day, but I could go participate in this and it might give a similar sense of being part of the fandom for this movie. Maybe even moreso since the fandom wouldn't have existed in the same form 20 years ago.

[–] criitz@reddthat.com 8 points 1 month ago

Id like to see some of my favorite movies in a theater setting sometimes. I'd be more likely to buy a ticket to this than gamble on another new generic superhero release.

It’s a play on nostalgia and FOMO as an advertising / service offering to get people back into theaters. Their decline due to digital / streaming has been exacerbated by the pandemic, so that’s why you see / hear about this a lot more now.

Personally, I think it’s the right call because I’ve been loving seeing or re-seeing classics in the theater. The experience is nice and like the other poster mentioned, helps me feel more connected to the fanbase. Definitely going to see this!

Seeing the 4k extended edition of the LoTR trilogy, in theater, is a goddamn EXPERIENCE

Between this and popcorn buckets, it is.
