Well Ya, the GOP thinks abortion is 100% voluntary. It's not! The vast majority of abortions are done for medical purposes and very few are done just because the women just doesn't want to have a baby

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 91 points 4 months ago (3 children)

But really, it doesn't matter why. A woman shouldn't be forced to carry a fetus for the same reason one of those anti-abortion fucknuts would object to being forced to give someone else one of their kidneys.

You would think nearly half the voting population would agree and not support those that do. But here we are. Boggles the mind.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 30 points 4 months ago

The only moral abortion is my abortion springs to mind... too bad those laws don't care.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

It hasn't been put that way to many of them in the Fox News bubble they live in, which is a big part of the problem. They hear "abortion is murder" and don't think about it further than that.

Total abortion bans are not actually popular among any voters. But us-vs-them extremism works extremely well.

Exactly. But lots of anti-abortionists think pregnancy is a punishment for having sex. Ignoring, of course, the fact that the majority of women who get abortions are married.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I agree. It's pure lunacy to think women in the modern area won't be able to get abortions when cave women 20,000 years ago figured it out. Yes there will be some, most younger women forced to carry a pregnancy to term. But the majority of abortions will go unreported and the GOP will think it's a win. Also, women forced to carry usually have less children over their life than if they were allowed to get an optional abortion. The GOPs main argument is that we need more children to support our nation but abortion bans have the exact opposite effect.

I'm not sure what "cave women" (I hate that misconception) 20,000 yeas ago you're talking about, but abortions outside of medical settings are extremely dangerous, so women getting them some other way or just figuring it out on their own is going to kill many of them.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Once again, I 100% agree with you. It's the GOP that's not reading history books. There was a time in our history abortion was nationally banned. Women will get abortions regardless of the legality and personal health risks. Actually after roe v wade was passed we saw a spike in population growth because spoiler alert, dead and unhealthy women due to a dangerous pregnancy have way less children.

I hate that misconception

Same here. I'm guessing the term stuck because cave environments are better at preserving remains than most others.

"'Cah-vay Dwellers', wasn't he in-"

"No, it's 'Cave Dwellers', Joel, it's the name of the movie."

I does feel like it's not giving our ancestors enough credit, like they were too stupid to make their own shelter and just used caves.

[–] eran_morad@lemmy.world 30 points 4 months ago

Republicans are an ongoing health crisis.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 24 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Well... there is a federal path to handling state level health care crises.

Two magical ingredients.

First is to actually declare a state of emergency in the Y'all Qaeda infested regions of the US on the basis of denied healthcare leading to the current and worsening humanitarian crisis in those areas; and in doing so, enabling the VA to provide abortion services to non-veterans under section §1784 of title 38, United States Code.

Second is federal enclave, which pretty much states that on federal facilities, state law can eat a bag of dicks.

This dystopian GOP shit is maddening. We need to stop trying to argue with it, and start finding ways to just work around it. Fuck em.

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 12 points 4 months ago (2 children)

That could end up whiplashing as the administration passes between US factions, no?

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Absolutely, but it's a lot better than whatever the hell we're doing now. And it can happen fast - biggest holdup would be the sudden change in supply/staffing demands at relatively few facilities, but the VA can limp along while doing its best until those needs are met.

This is speaking as a veteran who receives care at the VA - if there's one thing they can do well, it's juggling a clusterfuck while still somehow remaining operational.

[–] homura1650@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago

Yes. Anything other than a new law or new decision by the Supreme Court is subject to the whims of the current administration.

[–] Feliskatos@lemmy.world 18 points 4 months ago

Irony: Most expensive healthcare in the world and an anti-abortion healthcare crisis.
