10 months without moderation and it looks that clean?! Not a single pair of anime titties and no link to a prescription free online pharmacy? Lemmy never ceases to amaze me...

[–] Blaze@lemmy.zip 22 points 5 months ago (2 children)

The modlog shows some moderation, I guess it's the admin doing it: https://programming.dev/modlog/1025

[–] some_boring_username@lemm.ee 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for pointing that out, although it still seems to be unbelievably civil in here...

Keep in mind, for the target community, the most strident arguments tend to be fights over licenses or which shade of black make the best socks.

Yeah, half of those entries is me stepping in as an admin to ban/remove users breaking instance wide rules, which supersedes community specific moderation. In fact, all of those entries are either admins or automod stepping in.

for us admins we generally tend to let the community mods handle their community's reports

and for communities that are either:

  • not on our instance or
  • is on our instance but has no current active mods,

then we'll take over for moderating those communities till we find people who want to try becoming moderators🤗

No modding experience, but Linux & tech news remain a strong ~~hyperfixation~~ interest of mine. If that's enough, I could give it a shot.

Thanks everyone who volunteered, going to reach out to some people soon (will be prioritizing people with programming.dev accounts)

edit: modded adr1an and dwraf to start off since I like to start communities with two mods. They can choose what they want to do past that. Ill be the primary mod for a bit and then will transfer that to someone in the future

As a side note, there are still issues with federations of reports, so there would need to be at least one mod with a programming.dev account in the meantime, and hopefully the other mods will be able to see the reports "soon"

Oh bummer, forgot about that. Assuming it needn't be my only/main account, I could create a p.dev one, if it helps.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That would be great! Feel free to comment here with it once it is created!

More people than I expected volunteered, which is nice to see. Since I ended up creating an account, I'll leave it here anyway.

I volunteered because I worried for the community. There were few comments and I couldn't sit by when it seemed so straightforward to step up for the sake of something I care about.

Later, admins shared that they'd been taking care of it (things were never as dire as I feared), and they've since appointed actual moderators. Even one with actual experience, too! I trust things will be fine, now.

All this to say: I'll be here as an option, should you want more people, but I'm happy with how things turned out. Much better than the communities that (sadly) spend months looking for volunteers.

[–] anzo@programming.dev 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Count me in. I am moderator of another communities here, no problem.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 months ago

Seems like you made it, congrats!

I would also volunteer to mod the community. I'm a big Linux enthusiast and would like to help to keep the community a nice place to visit. Not really a lot of modding experience under my belt yet, though.

[–] 299792458ms@lemmy.zip 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I would love to but I am just an enthusiast...

[–] Blaze@lemmy.zip 11 points 5 months ago (2 children)

That shouldn't be an issue. Hopefully other people will volunteer too, and you'll have a group of people to mod it together.

[–] 299792458ms@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 months ago

Then I volunteer :)

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 6 points 5 months ago

I'm available

[–] ricdeh@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

I would like to try. I am a very passionate GNU/Linux user and advocate who spends much time on Lemmy and who would like to keep future discussion in this community civil and on-topic. But I do not have any modding experience so far, however, I have successfully helped transition friends and local institutions (partially) to GNU/Linux and to use FOSS programs.

I can do it, I don't see many people from this instance. From what I know cross instance modding is still buggy. I can help if there is a need for someone from programming.dev

My only qualification is that I use Nix(btw) :-)

[–] Blaze@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 months ago

Seems like you made it, congrats!

~~I'm down~~

I currently mod !freesoftware@lemmy.zip and !Linuxquestions@lemmy.zip

I've actually thought about starting a Linux community that isn't on lemmy[.]ml but I never got around to it.

Edit: You might want to choose someone from this instance. I'm down if no one else wants to but it seems we have lots of volunteers

[–] secret300@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 5 months ago

I'm on Lemmy all the time so why not
