I hate that everything is labeled as concepts instead of what the smell is. I don't know what a fucking Riptide Rush smells like, or a Cool Wave, or an Arctic Handjob.. just wtf is it???

[–] euphoric_cat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 4 months ago

yeah no for real

[–] virtueisdead@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 4 months ago (3 children)

gender binary reinforcement memes suck just as much as other ways of reinforcing the gender binary

[–] FakeGreekGirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, this would probably be better with a bit of a wording change (like "how deodorant is sold to women/how deodorant is sold to men").

I mean, there's definitely a real phenomenon at play here, but I think it has more to do with how the system indoctrinates us than any real, actual preferences.

[–] nexussapphire@lemm.ee 8 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Yeah, I prefer the more "feminine" smells from Old Spice. I've never been a fan of pungent chemical almost cologne smells in general. I really love that they did that because things aren't that black and white. I'd try a scent and almost gag from it.

[–] Shou@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I have the opposite. I dislike the excessive fruity smells of feminine deodorant. Plus, I don't nearly sweat as much as man and so I only need a little bit of men's deodorant. That can lasts for ages!

[–] nexussapphire@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Just going off of the point bigbananadealer@lemm.ee made.

I'm going to be honest I don't care what the scent is when you're in a relationship you grow fond of that. I had a girlfriend that smelled like cologne probably because she smoked and was still 17. I grew fond of that smell despite not caring for it much initially.

It kinda just doesn't matter what other people think because if they care and spend enough time with you they'll probably start missing it when you're gone.

[–] Shou@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

That's actually wholesome. Thanks for sharing!

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

well deodorants are actually for smells that the opposite sex generally likes more, not the wearer

Yeah I agree, not really a fan of them.

And that's why I use womens deodorant. Certainly not because I'm trans, goodness no, what are you accusing me of?

[–] euphoric_cat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 months ago (3 children)

hey im not judging, if i were a cis man i probably would too

[–] Binzy_Boi@supermeter.social 7 points 4 months ago (4 children)

Token cis man, much prefer the women's hygiene products, just worried about stares I'd get at the store lmao.

[–] LuckingFurker@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 months ago

I look about as typical a dude as it's possible to and literally no-one has ever even acknowledged when I'm buying women's deodorant 🤷‍♀️

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

Here in California, its normal for guys to get hygiene products for wives, partners, sisters, etc. Though in the cities no one cares who wears what either.

I'd assume in other states it's normal for guys to do the household shopping. Maybe not in Texas or Florida.

[–] DessertStorms@kbin.social 2 points 4 months ago

Beyond it not actually mattering what others think, and as others have said - the chance of anyone even noticing being miniscule, if someone looking at you really assumes that only women can use "women's" hygiene products, then they probably also assume you're buying it for a woman in your life and couldn't care less...

[–] FateOfTheCrow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 months ago

Most people would just presume you're buying for someone else anyway.

I struggle to find unscented deodorant and it makes me so angry. Should not be difficult to find.

[–] azertyfun@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

This thread is throwing me for a loop. Here in Belgium most deodorant I've interacted with is either unscented or at worst lightly scented (I just checked, mine is not marketed as scented but has "perfume" in the ingredient list and smells only slightly).

Axe body spray is a thing for lazy men who don't want to bother with a separate perfume and have a distinct lack in taste, but it's not the norm for anyone over the age of 16.

Maybe try to buy in bulk online, I'm sure unscented antiperspirant exist if only due to allergies.

What the actual fuck?

I am 48 and don't know a single man who wears perfume daily. For me a fragrance is reserved for special occasions, like weddings or dates and to wear it to work would be considered quite unprofessional (like dressing up above your boss). But I guess we must all be lazy and lacking your refined taste... yeah

At least I am not the only one. As far as I know, they are widely sold in Japan along subtle scents like "Soap", but I guess that's about it.

[–] larouxn@beehaw.org 4 points 4 months ago

Can confirm, can get just about anything unscented in Japan. Thankfully likely due to the general societal norm of not having a strong smell wafting about oneself. Though not all abide, most do.

[–] FuryMaker@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

We can't be alone here.

Unscented; it only serves the purpose of not making me sweat or smell bad. And one that doesn't stain.

[–] Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I've seen them at target, aimed at women but they're there.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

If you buy it, expect advertisements for baby products in your spam.

[–] noxy@yiffit.net 2 points 4 months ago

I spent like ten minutes in both the deodorant aisles at a local target (WHY ARE THERE MULTIPLE AISLES FOR THAT??) and found none, sadly

At least "womanly" scents are descriptive, so you know more or less what you're getting, if I want to try out some "manly" scents (they get stronger more effective antiperspirant and I don't mind what "gender" I smell of), I'd have to order all of them (am housebound, can't just go around a drugstore, sniffing) just to see what iceberg, shark, and attack helicopter actually smell of lol.. It's easier to just smell of orchids.. 😂

[–] RacoonVegetable@reddthat.com 5 points 4 months ago (2 children)

This post is a fake. I have never seen an F16 deodorant.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 months ago

Duke Cannon sells Naval Supremacy, which might be F4 Tomcat soap.

I only use Sub-orbital Tactical Rocket Shark Extreme™️.

[–] TalesFromTheKitchen@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

When buying perfume I pick the unisex ones, because most men's perfume smells like toilet duck. Also I like smelling like flowers or honey and smoked vanilla.

[–] TalesFromTheKitchen@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Ah, yes, toilet cleaner, thought it was universal, seems to be a European(?) thing.

[–] FakeGreekGirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 months ago

We definitely have it in the US as well.

[–] Gork@lemm.ee 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I wanna smell like a fighter jet.

Bitches love the smell of avgas.

[–] name_NULL111653@pawb.social 2 points 4 months ago

Oh yeah! They better have a 100LL option for us Skyhawk-flying folk (mostly volunteer search and rescue pilots and students).

Okay, but icebergs go hard as a smell.

[–] euphoric_cat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

i dont even know what they smell like can you describe it

[–] Binzy_Boi@supermeter.social 3 points 4 months ago

Think of smelling a glass of ice cubes fresh out of the freezer. Very neutral, but also has a slight "freshwater" scent.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I remember the overly macho ads for men's deodorant. The Axe brand is the biggest culprit back in the 00s. Men think women dig the smell and spray too much. But little do men realise that women hate the smell. And men who overspray with Axe tend to be douchebags. So, the Axe spray becomes a huge signal for the women that the guy is a douche.
