Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

I do understand people don't want homeless camps parked outside their houses. But cops harass people sleeping in their cars wherever they are. Some rest stops only allow you to stay for 3 hours. Some cities ban any sleeping in a vehicle anywhere in city limits from 10PM to 6AM.

If it weren't prohibitively expensive I'd buy an old semi truck and drive it around without a trailer. It would be like the ultimate cheat code for sleeping in towns without getting harassed.

I'm assuming you're genuinely asking and don't understand why... Living out of a car is a sign of being poor, and businesses, police, etc. don't want poor people loitering around. That doesn't apply to truck drivers because it's a profession and they will reliably leave where they're sleeping after several hours.

I'm not saying it's right, that's just reason for the difference in treatment.

People who sleep in their cars regularly do this a rule. The rule is: "Your sleeping location is for sleeping only, pull in, go to sleep, wake up early and leave." No one that is a veteran at it hangs out where they sleep.

class divide. as someone who occasionally sleeps in my car, invest in window covers. ppl should mind their business

The number of churches who don't welcome people to sleep in their car in their parking lots is too damn high.

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

There's a church in SF where they let people sleep in the pews, and will go around and quietly announce when they are serving meals so folks who are awake can go get food. That is the kind of church even I would donate money to.

What am I supposed to do if I strongly agree with you?

Unpopular opinion, upvote and move on. Although I think this should have been posted in no stupid questions, since it’s more of a question than opinionated statement.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It's not an unpopular opinion so he should downvote and move on

It also shouldn't be in nostupidquestions because this is a bait/vent post

Join an Elk's Lodge, they are everywhere and have RV hookups for cheap overnights. The membership is really reasonable.

Sleep in your car at a truck stop or rest area like, uh, truckers do. Trucks can't just park anywhere for the night, especially in a town or city. Not sure where you are getting that idea from.

"In its majestic equality, the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread." - Anatole France

However, as you note, it also allows anyone to sleep at a truck stop or highway rest area.

In the more caucasian parts of the US, I have definitely experienced state troopers who will complain that people are sleeping in a rest area. Some rest areas specifically have signage saying you can't sleep outside of the truck area (and cars are not allowed in the truck area) and others will make it a point to knock on your window every 30-40 minutes to say "Hey, just checking that you are okay. Oh, sorry, didn't mean to bother you."

I've also noticed this increasingly happening in some of the more popular climbing destinations. And... in that case I can't at all blame the locals. The popularization of #VanLife coupled with the increasing tendency for dirtbag climbers to actually be ridiculously rich teenagers during a gap year and "Leave no trace" has become more about hiding your macbook and jackery charger than not literally shitting all over the trails and parking lots. It really sucks for those of us following good practices on a weekend (or week long) trip but I've also grown to increasingly hate the vast majority of "dirtbags" so...

But, generally speaking: If you park in a rest area and don't have a car packed to the brim with boxes and luggage, nobody cares.

Not sure where you are getting that idea from

I never stated that idea. You just did.

Truckers can park in the streets in various business/industrial parks. Try doing that in your car and someone will notice you and rat you out.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 0 points 7 months ago

You might be mistaking that with Walmart (?) and other stores that pride themselves on offering RV (and, where possible, semi truck) parking in their lots during off hours.

The vast majority of businesses will call a towing company or even the cops if they notice you are sleeping in their parking lot for an extended period of time.

I generally strongly discourage people from sleeping in parking lots (you tend to be pretty isolated and don't have the regular patrols/traffic that rest areas do) but as long as you get there at or around closing time and leave the next day, the vast majority of counties will not care. The issue becomes when you are there long enough that the employees notice.

Honestly OP? It mostly sounds like you just don't know how to "correctly" get your vagrant on. It increasingly seems like you are just pulling off in residential areas or setting up shop at a Trader Joe's.

Who are you arguing against here? The cops?

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

I’ve been to this town and their streets can’t support car-dweller nor semi truck-dwellers.

The argument is t wrong, it’s just that this isn’t the town to fight it on. San Luis Obispo is a tiny town that depends on tourism and has like a few roads that all of the tourism occurs on.

Is there enough air in a car?

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Yes. Also car windows can open and close.
