Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

People always want to say if you're a Liberal you're stupid or if you're a Conservative you're stupid but in my opinion the ultimate in IQ tests is if you see a blockage up ahead and instead of taking your foot off the accelerator, and instead of applying some brake pedal, you actually continue to accelerate.

Like what do these people think is going to happen? Is Moses going to descend from Heaven and part the cars or change that red light to green?

When two semis are side by side on the interstate and there are only two lanes and one semi is overtaking the other by going a mere .5 mph faster can't these people do some simple calculations which tell them, "hey, you're going to have to wait a few minutes before you can get through this"? Instead they mash the pedal down and then have to apply the brakes on the interstate. It makes no sense.

The only explanation I have come up with is that these people somehow won a lifetime supply of brake pads and they are determined to get their value out of it. Or they are brake pad design engineers who are doing real world tests.

I'd argue merging in to 65 MPH traffic going 35 MPH is a better gauge of low IQ. But, I guess both instances show an absolute lack of any foresight, which is associated with Low IQ...

For me it's the tailgating, regardless of whether the brake lights are on. It's not a race. Whether you follow half a car length behind, or 8 car lengths behind, it's not going to change when you're getting to your destination. I woupd rather keep my distance and show up a few seconds later to my destination, than tailgate and wreck because I didn't leave enough braking room.

I need to get this bumper sticker:

The closer you get the slower I go.

I don't think that this opinion is going to prove all that unpopular

[–] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago (1 children)

People won't like me saying this but Star Trek was honestly pretty good!

Yeah. This is gonna be just like Reddits 'unpopular' opinion was.

It being the “ultimate” sign maybe. But this shits just normal everyday annoyances that everyone hates.

They hated him because he spoke the truth

[–] andrew@lemmy.stuart.fun 9 points 7 months ago

They hated him because he posted a pretty obvious opinion in c/unpopularopinions. And they don't hate him. Just this post.

Not sure about "ultimate" but yeah it's a sign of either low intelligence or high methamphetamine.

[–] ivanafterall@kbin.social 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The ultimate sign of low intelligence, in my opinion, is multiple experienced doctors agreeing that the person has such a severe physiological and/or neurological disability as to be tragically incapable even of self-care. It might not be the most-popular view, but I said it.

physiological and/or neurological disability

... people with severe forms of disorders like asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, and ALS have low intelligence?

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 10 points 7 months ago

Don't accelerate into brake lights.

[–] GlitterInfection@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I have an electric car and I enjoy the way the extra torque feels on my body. I don't mind getting to the red light and waiting sooner and I'm not accelerating above the speed limit or doing anything unsafe.

[–] sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

That's not your actual opinion. You're just upset about bad drivers.

[–] Fyurion@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

We have a mind reader over here. Do me next!

[–] Osa-Eris-Xero512@kbin.social 3 points 7 months ago

You have to buy them dinner first

[–] suodrazah@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Behaving like this only becomes valid if you are in heavy traffic. Moving to the next zone swiftly lets more cars also clear the previous zone behind you.

Of course, there is balance. It's pretty easy to see who understands this, and who is simply a binary driver.

[–] LemmyIsFantastic@lemmy.world -5 points 7 months ago

Nah time and place. You can get to the front of the lane or in front of a particularly slow driver, or even just have fun mashing then gas in a fun car.
