Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Why do so many people try to use the all feed as their default? That's so rare everywhere else in social media.

I mean, I cannot imagine trying to use the waterfall of garbage I'd get if I defaulted to some kind of "all" feed on a place like reddit.

Where do you folks come from?

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I have a Home feed to things I subscribe to. But like to view All for new things. Just want to filter out the explosion of these topics from All. Lots of work to do here✂️✂️✂️you can disagree with my choices. That’s why I posted this here.

[–] Candelestine@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (2 children)

It's not a criticism of you specifically. It's just that this thread gets made very frequently by many different people, and I've yet to really get any kind of answer.

I ask this same question each time. I really do want to know where people come from that this route sounds like a reasonable and efficient way to approach the user experience. To me it just sounds like a whole lot of work that'll never end, because people will keep making new communities.

[–] seathru@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Lemmy is new. I don't inherently know what communities I want to subscribe to. How do I stumble across them without using all?

[–] Candelestine@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

All is solid. What I don't understand is putting in a ton of work to curate the all into something good. That's what the other feed is for. lol

https://lemmyverse.net/communities

You can see the most active ones, and also research based on your interests

No, not really. lol I mean yeah, life has a lot of work in it, but life doesn't have an optional "all" feed. Fortunately. That'd be even worse than a reddit all feed.

edit: I mean, even 4chan doesn't have an all feed.

[–] wahming@monyet.cc 4 points 9 months ago

All is a nice way to find and be exposed to new communities. I'm also on a small instance, so it's a tiny waterfall

[–] small44@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Especially when you have a way to block what you dislike only for you

[–] shani66@ani.social 2 points 9 months ago

Makes sense for a place a small as lemmy though.

[–] chris@l.roofo.cc 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

If you only want specific stuff, why don't you just subscribe to what you like? Your opinion is not unpopular, just wrong. It wouldn't be better. It would be better for you. That's an important distinction. Lots of people enjoy it as it is.

[–] CosmicApe@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago

But they don't just want specific stuff, they want everything except for a few specific things

[–] small44@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Why don't you wish that there is more diverse popular topics instead of wanting less content from what you fon't like?

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago

Ok I’ll wish for that. 🦄

Also regional, sports-teams and languages I don't understand

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

Yeah, in a system where anyone can create any sub, they need significantly finer-grained filters to improve discovery and prevent manual curation of block lists. Like you shouldn't be able to create an instance &/or sub without declaring a language (apparently the reason you see foreign language posts is because those instances/subs haven't set their language, or set it wrong). You should have to categorise what your sub is about, and have to set a location. These don't need to be hyper restrictive. They could be very open ended. They just need to simplify the experience for users to filter out all the crap they don't care about with minimal effort.

Did you try select only Undetermined and English in your account language settings?

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Yes, but the thing is that most people submit non-english content using the Undetermined language, defeating the purpose of filtering out other languages.

Another issue is that communities can disable some languages, but as a user you don't see which ones are enabled/disabled.

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Never hesitate to politely point it out to the community. I'm part of a few French speaking communities, we always make sure to only enable French and to indicate it in the sidebar

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Now I'm wondering, does that cause an issue when posting or commenting with a third-party apps, which might not have the ability to assign a language?

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

There are basically three options

  • user has all languages available, so French would be used as the common language with the community
  • user only has a few languages selected, including French, so same as above
  • user doesn't have French in their languages, in that case they usually ask in the support community (which allows every language) and see that it's a common issue
[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Can you do that in voyager or do you need the official website to do that?

[–] Blaze@reddthat.com 1 points 9 months ago

Not sure about voyager, the settings are available in the standard UI for sure

Furorem cacabo in te et is te merget. Delendus es, puer.

Would be nice if regional communities could be tagged by language, andnsports tags for sports communities. That would make it easier to find thosez and optionally block them by tags.

[–] seathru@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Would be nice if regional communities could be tagged by language

That option is there. It's just half-ass implemented and not enforced.

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 months ago

There is definitely some room for improvement.

[–] seathru@lemm.ee 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

If only there were tools that one could use to curate their feed.

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

They keep me very busy ✂️

[–] seathru@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

Same. I've basically turned All into my subscribed list.

[–] lvxferre@mander.xyz 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

What if we could tag communities, and use tags to sort out content?

[–] JimmyBigSausage@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago

Great idea! This needs to be shared!!
