Kind of unpopular opinion but I think the shooting gameplay in FONV is absolute dogshit and I had the most fun in the game by dumping my stats into Charisma, Intelligence, Science, Speech, stuff like that, and letting my companions deal with killing stuff. FONV is secretly a semi-linear RPG after the fashion of FO1/2, and once I understood that it only looks like a Bethesda game, I think it became a lot more fun.

Not a place for gamer gate talk or other reactionary behavior. TERFs and incels get the wall.

I don't have a problem with this unless shooting is also the core aspect of the game. Like in Starfield, shooting is the game. Literally every quest, every problem is solved by shooting which sucks a lot.
They had a quest where you have to talk to a sort of rogue AI. You can do this quest just by talking which is nice. But it was a one-off. Also it was a bit pseudo-intellectual and creatively bankrupt but that is typical Bethesda.
- New Vegas is more accurately labeled an RPG with shooting mechanics as opposed to Fallout 4 and Starfield, which are shooters with some RPG elements.
There is quite a bit of combat, but you can beat the game without killing a single thing if you want.
- Some mods I use and recommend:
Necessary
NVAC (New Vegas Anti Crash) - Hard recommendation.
FNV 4GB Patcher - Hard recommendation.
NVSE (New Vegas Script Extender) -- Necessary for most mods.
YUP (Yukichigai Unofficial Patch) - Bugfixes.
Mod Configuration Menu - Lets you configure mods in-game.
New Vegas Stutter Remover - Hard recommendation.
Necessary for More Mods
JIP LN NVSE Plugin
lStewieAl's Tweaks and Engine Fixes -- Absolute ton of QoL improvements and options.
JohnnyGuitar NVSE
kNVSE Animation Plugin
Not Necessary, but I Like Em
More Perks -- Adds more perks and traits to the game. Not necessarily super balanced.
Fallout Character Overhaul -- Makes the game much less ugly.
New Vegas Enhanced Camera -- Allows you to view your torso and legs in first-person.
JVS (Just Vanilla Sprint) -- Allows you to sprint, using your AP as a sort of stamina bar.
Perk Every Level -- Definitely unbalanced when considering what the developers were shooting for, but I'd personally much rather have a perk every level than every two. Even better with More Perks.
There are more. I would recommend checking out New Vegas' most popular mods on NexusMods..
Plenty of other cool stuff, like new weapons, side-quests and companions. The game is genuinely great vanilla, too, though, and I wouldn't recommend anything too crazy for your first run.
Not so vanilla you go without the anti-crash and stutter mods, though. Great game. Runs like hot garbage.
Thank you very much. I am looking forward to finding out whether Bethesda have been irredeemable from the beginning or just have begun so lately lol.
New Vegas was made by Obsidian not Bethesda. But Bethesda used to make good Games until oblivion. I love to play The elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall and TES 3 Morrowind.
Generally I agree but I played oblivion so much I melted my first disk lol
Yeah oblivion was good! What they mean?
My hypothesis is that everyone absolutely adores the first new TES game that they encounter after discovering video games. Whatever game that is, they frequently disparage the later ones for being too dumbed down and the earlier ones for being too obtuse and archaic.
There was a hilarious old Usenet post I saw of a Daggerfall fan complaining about how Morrowind was such a tiny world and so dumbed down and simple compared to glorious gigantic Daggerfall.
I recently purchased Skyrim, and I had a ton of fun; but I had began to realize a plethora of issues from game balancing to unimpressive story-telling that finally compelled me to quit. I spent a little less than 93 hours on it, which speaks great volume of how enjoyable the game can be, however.
Here you dropped this hammer after hitting the nail on the head
Interesting hypothesis. I dunno if i have a favorite myself. I love Skyrim for the map, and ease of use on a controller. I love oblivion for the build-your-own spell system, but not the spellcasting. Sadly morrowind was missed as i had the notorious xbox version
Then how is Fallout 4 made by Bethesda? And why did Obsidian make Outer Worlds?
I think Bethesda owns the IP for the Fallout franchise since 3. Sometimes companies just license out sequels to another development studio.
Obsidian has made many sequels to popular RPGs from other developers like KotOR 2 (Bioware made KotOR) and Neverwinter Nights 2 (Bioware made Neverwinter Nights).
Obsidian also makes games based on it's own original IP like Pillars of Eternity, Alpha Protocol, Tyranny, etc. It's a great studio with lots of fun games!
Black Isle was the original Fallout developer. Before they shuttered, some of the most influential devs formed Obsidian, and years later Bethesda eventually ended up with the rights to Fallout. Bethesda made Fallout 3, 4, and I think 76 too unless that was a different external studio, Obsidian was contracted to make New Vegas using Bethesda's game engine.
there is plenty of combat and exploration, but also have lengthy nice dialog. much of it is influenced by yours skills. the quests are very diverse with multiple conclusions, unlike fo4 that you go somewhere shoot things get items and deliver it.
I've played FNV multiple times, on two desktops and a laptop without experiencing crashes and without using NVAC or the 4GB patcher. I can't help but wonder if the myriad of "stabilizing" mods end up making the game more unstable in the long run. This is anecdotal, of course, but I'd recommend that you play the vanilla game first then apply bugfix/anti-crash mod as (and if) needed.
With that in mind, for QoL mods I recommend the mod that adds fast-travel points in different shops around Freeside, because you have to get past loading screens to go from one area of Freeside to the other, and that's annoying. When you reach Freeside, do a couple of missions in there and you'll understand what I'm saying -- after that, search and download that mod.
I also recommend the mod that adds borderlands-style damage indicators because it helps me know exactly how much damage I'm dealing.
