They're more than good enough though. The like-to-dislike ratio it shows always lines up with what you'd expect the video to have.
But on the other hand, you're only getting data from a very niche demographic. Nerdy tech types.
Which is a perfect proxy for me.

I would say that it is just like random sample from statistics. You won't really get accurate count, but you will get a ratio beetween likes and dislikes.
But iirc return YouTube dislike extrapolates only for the videos where it doesn't have enough data. So for new videos it can record the amount of dislikes through the extension, which makes it far more accurate (although the sample size is still a little bit smaller than it was on YouTube).

And I would have been happy with 80%
YouTube seems more interested these days in telling you what to watch, then letting its user express any opinion, wouldn't be surprised if comments were hidden next from everybody.
The dislikes were hidden specifically to protect the images of brands. Think of things like game trailers or movie trailers that would get overloaded with dislikes if people perceived them as bad. I don't think Disney really pays attention to their dislikes. They and other companies prefer them to be hidden however, so that when Nintnedo pulls another super Mario Wonder for $70 that the haters feel alone about it.
YouTube is so fucking weird. If they would've focused on a good platform 5 or 10 years ago, they would be the netflix, hbo and amaxon combined. Vut somehow they are more concerned to tell people what they can do and don't. For some reason all of YouTube has to be suited for 5 year olds. Their algorithm keep telling me to watch mr.beast or some assholes who eat food for 5 people like a bunch of animals.
I have a theory, that some of the things they do is blackmailing to prevent companies from pushing for the copyright directive that the eu got, in the u.s is it far fetched?
Maybe I'm just on YouTube too much but my algo knows better than to recommend me that stuff.
I distinctly remember Activision running to hide the dislike from some World of Warcraft videos, what with how shit Shadowlands got, especially towards the end. I don't remember the exact video, but it had something like a 84% dislike
The World of Warcraft videos and not the Call of Duty ones? Which makes me wonder, might Activision have the most videos with the most dislikes on YouTube?
In theory, it can also be used by the recommendation algorithm to show you less such videos. Who knows if it's actually used like that though.
I think it's even the other way around. If you dislike, you interacted with the video, be it because it made you furious or what ever. The algorithm cares about engagement, not about liking. At least that's what I have heard
The creator can still feel like shit for making a bad/unpopular video when they see the number of dislikes, so it still has a point for me.
Maybe it affects the algorithm or something. And it allows the users to at least feel like they're expressing their feelings, without outright denying the option like Facebook used to do.
Algorithm favors videos that are highly upvoted or downvoted. Anything that gets emotion/reaction out of you - doesn't matter whether positive or negative - is brought to the top.
imo its not about feelings, but about the image.
having for example a massively disliked trailer,
turns into more negative press.
so youtube protects its big buisness customers,
and pretends its a change to protect creators in general.

Doesnt it also refine the content that gets recommended? Not nure if there is really any utility in seeing likes or dislikes of other people (maybe your own). One mans trash...
If people cannot see the dislikes they feel more people will watch the videos.
Same thing with combining the scores on Reddit and Lemmy. It's a false picture of user feedback.
If you use Libretube or Piped, the dislikes can still be viewed.
There is an addon to reactivate the dislike display. I see dislikes but there are much less than before obviously
