Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Are there any celebrities that are confirmed to be using lemmy?

I know celebs have used Reddit, have any followed us to Lemmy that are confirmed. For example I know Adam from mythbusters was an active redditor or Arnold Schwarzenegger etc. Do we know if any have came along with us

Appreciate where this post is posted, but I doubt we’ll see any celebs on lemmy ever. I mean who are we who are here? Tech interested nerds at best, incels and tankies at the worst. Only one I could think would ever bother being here because he’s a based nerd is Henry Cavill

[–] Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed. My SO is looking for an alternative to reddit but I have nothing to recommend her to. I don't even try to get her into Lemmy because there nothing here for her. This place is way more niche than most people here realize and the entire Lemmy as a whole is compareable in size and actvity to a single relatively popular subreddit.

[–] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

True. Apart from mediocre memes and the same news over and over there is not much to do here if you aren't into tech. It might actually be good if you spend too much time on reddit, but then again there's also a sense of community and, let's be honest, mindless relaxation in communities like makeup addiction, new parents, AITA or moldly interesting. They are all missing here. I had just discovered a bra that fits before the reddit shutdown. Now I will never find a bra that fits I guess.

I just hope to wait and see more ordinary people come along.

I get that, I'd be happy to have Henry here with us. Tbf to us all, I'm closer to technophobe than I am to tech interested but I do agree with what you've said. I've basically just followed links when Reddit api's shut down and here I am, so it's not a far shout for some celebrities to do the same but I'm still not holding my breath.

How many times do we have to go over this?

It's "esteemed Academy Award nominated character actress Margot Robbie".

[–] Acters@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

It's a more humble title than "Lemmy Android moderator"

[–] thefloweracidic@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I love Margot Robbie, she even commented on one of my comments here!

[–] Afghaniscran@feddit.uk 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Is it confirmed though? I don't want to seem like I'm being an arse but anyone can make a profile. I don't know how to ask this without being a dick in the end haha

[–] Xyre@lemmus.org 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] Afghaniscran@feddit.uk 7 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Again, I feel like I might be a total cynic here. I've actually interacted with this profile recently according to upvotes and replies I've actually typed myself but there's nothing confirming that it's not someone else impersonating Margot robbie. I feel like a tit for calling it out but this hasn't confirmed anything for me except that this person turned up early to get their username.

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 44 points 1 year ago (2 children)

My dude… it’s 100% not her

[–] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Sometimes I play her on TV though.

[–] Grunt4019@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah I went through the profile, doesn’t seem like her. And there’s no proof.

Quiet down you’re going to anger Margot Robbie

I've seen Margot Robbie on here. 😏

[–] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 28 points 1 year ago (3 children)

But have you talked to Margot Robbie here though?

[–] CmdrShepard@lemmy.one 8 points 1 year ago

Not yet, but maybe one of these days.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 8 points 1 year ago

I'm too shy 🥺

I thought it was a hallucination from eating too many raw hot dogs

[–] rufus@discuss.tchncs.de 23 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

They're on Mastodon. Quite a few. I think I'm subscribed to Stephen Fry and some others.

[–] Afghaniscran@feddit.uk 8 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Stephen fry is an absolute legend. Do you mind explaining mastodon for me? I never understood twitter so it could be a big ask.

[–] rufus@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, I'm definitely the wrong person to ask about Mastodon. I have an account and I scroll through some posts every few weeks or so if I'm bored. I don't really use it.

  • @stephenfry@mastodonapp.uk
  • @gretathunberg@mastodon.nu
  • @georgetakei@universeodon.com

google: "celebrities on mastodon"

Seems there are not that much celebrities around, and Stephen Fry's last post there is from early September. Idk. I guess celebrities post things on platforms like Twitter but don't exactly spend their time on link aggregators / discussion platforms like Lemmy. I've seen a few on Reddit. But even on the bigger AMAs they often had a seperate account or someone do it for them. But there are a few on Reddit. And we here on Lemmy only have like 40.000 active users. So judging by the statistics I wouldn't expect many celebs here.

If anyone, I guess we have Torvalds or Stallman. But if they were here, I doubt they be stupid enough to admit it.

[–] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As long as you have a blatantly AI generated profile picture and don't get verified, you can literally say any dumb stuff you want here and no one will ever try to cancel you for what you said.

I have finally solved social media!

That dude who didn't poop for three days is a celebrity to me

[–] whaleross@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

I think the beauty of this line of social media is that it is so anonymous in the sense that it doesn't matter who is behind the username. It can be the most basic bitch in Ohio, a shut-in from Italy, a porn star from Hungary or a chart breaking pop star from London. As long they have something interesting to contribute, it does not matter at all who they are. No need to prove anything. Everybody can just be.

[–] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I nominate you buddy! You’re the first Lemmy celebrity! Well wait wasn’t there that one person who talked about holding his poop? He might be in the #1 spot lol

[–] Afghaniscran@feddit.uk 5 points 1 year ago

Hahaha, I can't hold it that long although if I got a small fortune for it, I'd promise to hold it for as long as humanly possible and to donate any money to a charity of the donors choice.

[–] oroboros@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I think this is very interesting, and you should go pester ones like Stephen Fry on mastadon to come have a play with lemmy

Just as a homage to Stephen Fry in particular, here's a fantastic audiobook version of hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy on archive.org

I believe I've seen Margot Robbie pop in a few threads here and there

I once saw an user with the name spez. I heard he is pretty popular

[–] SatanicNotMessianic@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

I’d be pretty surprised if people like Cory Doctorow aren’t on here, but most celebrities engage for a reason (eg to be seen and maintain their brand). It’s happening somewhat on Mastodon and on Threads, but even on Reddit it was limited to the occasional AMA for the most part. If people were participating, they were mostly using aliases.

I don’t think we have enough organic users yet to make an AMA kind of thing happen regularly with random celebs, and I suspect most of them aren’t yet drawn to the content and format we have so far.

[–] governorkeagan@lemdro.id 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There’s one that I know of but I can’t remember her name. I think it starts with “A” and she might be Australian but don’t quote me on that.

Academy Award nominated character actress Argot Obbie.
