Meanwhile I'm getting pulled over multiple times for my loud exhaust because my muffler fell off and I don't have the money to fix it.

Then the cop pulling me over has to stop talking as a motorcycle drives by so loud he can't even hear himself.

That's because the law wasn't made because rich assholes, but because broken exhausts, wether by design or by negligence, are a god damn nuisance.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 39 points 1 year ago (5 children)

And yet the people who's cars are loud by design are largely ignored because fuck the poor.

"Hey I see your muffler is broken"

"Yeah I don't have the money to fix it"

"Well now you'll have even less money, here's your $150 ticket"

Compared to straight pipe, you would have a short pipe. Being so much closer to the engine, you'd get more noise. Even straight pipe dampens the noise a bit.

In Germany its usually the fast cars that get pulled over for being too loud, my exhaust pipe on my old car was completely rusted through and I drove through a police check where they pull everyone over.

They didnt say anything regarding the exhaust.

I replaced it before the next inspection, because I would have never passed with it rusted through.

[–] kaesaecracker@leminal.space 8 points 1 year ago (6 children)

at least in Germany there is an inspection...

The problem is that loud pipes are CHEAP.

Literally straight-piping your car is one of the cheapest mods.

You actually have to pay more money if you want more performance and for it to be (relatively) quiet. That's one of the reasons loud vehicles are so common because and best solution for more performance is also the cheapest.

(It is more complicated than that, but this isn't the car community to where the nuances matter)

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yup. When my exhaust fell off, I replaced it with straight pipe because it was the cheapest option. I also don't rev my engine through neighborhoods, so no body cares. I can't tell much of a noise difference in or out. I think the turbocharger did most of the damping.

[–] ClassyDave@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

In a lot of places a turbo is considered a muffler or sound damping device which allows for exhausts to be straight piped after the turbo legally.

Is there a car community on Lemmy yet?

[–] Reddit_Is_Trash@reddthat.com 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So far I've only seen the very vocal anti car community

There's a mechanic advice page but not many have asked for advice. This is a shameless plug bc somehow I ended up being a part of that place and would love to see it active

No and with how most of the users lean, I have a hard time believing a car enthusiast community wouldn't be brigaded 24/7

Just put a vuvuzela in the exhaust pipe.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just remove all the exhaust manifold and let the gases just exit the engine without any noise filtering.

After about a couple of hours of driving, the owner will probably come back and ask for louder pipes.

That's almost what the "whistle tip" phase was, but with a bit more of that super cool "constipated goose passing a load" sound to it.

Now we got DSG farts. Kind of like a shart in an empty coffee tin on each upshift. "Bplarhpth" in English.

This post is funny because it's true

[–] dlok@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago (5 children)

The funny thing is the loudest exhaust possible is probably the cheapest as it's basically just a pipe with no features

Or conversely, having bass boosters so strong that it's questionable as to how you car hasn't fallen apart.

[–] who8mydamnoreos@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (3 children)

It must be hard when your accomplishments are so little that no one notices you exist; i might be an obnoxious man child just to get people to notice me too.

Ironically enough nobody in the world has been deterred from loud exhausts because of the cost. You literally just cut the muffler off, you can do it for under $10 working from scratch

Please don't tell them.

I refer to them as “cool guys.”
