TLDR: I am looking for more diverse non-meat options than your average restaurant or supermarket provides. Because they don't quite work for me as well as I'd like.

I am not a picky eater, I enjoy vegan food and non-vegan food alike. I've noticed most "vegan" advertised products are just meat imitations that taste like seasoned cardboard.

Too darn often do I see cooks and stores trying to replace the visuals of meat, rather than finding something that tastes satisfying in it's own way. I'd be eating more vegan food if the options available had a similar convenience and filled me up properly.

Which may sound stupid, but I've tried going vegan and I did not feel great. I guess beans and tofu are not for me. Now I realise I may sound like an uninformed dingus who doesn't know how to find decent ingredients and recipes... That's because I am.

But I would really like to find some options that work for me. And I'm fine with trying 20 things over the course of a month and deciding only a few work for me.

Does anyone here have any advice?

Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)

The beautiful open vistas and bountiful plants and animals described by early European explorers were not an untouched wilderness in which humans played no role. (...) Native people created the landscape that Europeans encountered: “Lands adapted to them as they adapted to landscapes.”

Fires, many of them intentionally set, also shaped much of California’s vegetation before European colonization.

Native communities treated fire as an ally to increase biodiversity, improve basket materials, encourage healthier berries, control pests and diseases, enhance the growth of grasses and bulbs, germinate seeds, encourage mushroom growth, and reduce the chances of high-intensity fires.

According to Hankins and other experts, Western methods of fire suppression are largely to blame for California’s catastrophic fires that are becoming increasingly common every summer. The removal of Indigenous people and their land-tending practices, such as intentional burning, went hand in hand with misguided fire-suppression policies.

Unofficial sources have been stated to suggest that at least 100 people have died in one township as a result of the devastating earthquake that hit Tibet’s Mt Everest county of Dingri in Shigatse City on Jan 7 morning, casting doubts on China’s official claim of a total of 126 known casualties thus far. The doubt is reinforced by China’s total ban on access to the affected region for everyone, including the independent media, except for government dispatched rescue groups.

Suggesting that at least 100 deaths had occurred in the county’s Dramtso township alone, which has ten villages – including Senga (Zingkar, the Township headquarter), Gurong (Guring), and Chajiang – the Tibetan service of rfa.org Jan 10 said, based on Tibetan sources, that it was among the worst affected. China’s official media had mentioned the epicentre Tsogo (with seven villages) and Chulho too among the worst affected townships in Dingri county.

[...]

While determining the exact death toll is currently very challenging, “everybody is sceptical of the official death toll, but we have no way to know the actual figures,” [...] a resident of Tibet’s capital Lhasa [is] saying.

[...]

The available pictures of the disaster, which show rescue personnel actively helping victims, are mostly, if not all, those taken and released by China’s official media. This is because China is reported to prohibit individuals from taking pictures or videos, with police being deployed to monitor aid workers to ensure compliance. Independent media continues to remain banned from Tibet.

[...]

Tibetans from across the region attempting to rush assistance were being blocked at various newly set up checkpoints, with authorities requiring permits for entry. They are said to be required to hand over to Chinese authorities all aid materials for distribution, leaving volunteers unable to directly provide support to those in need. As a result, mountains of relief and aid materials donated for the earthquake victims are stated to be piled up at the government’s local disaster relief management centre in Dingri county.

A $10 billion cyclone and flood reinsurance pool was set up in 2022, in a bid to bring down home and business insurance premiums in northern Australia

The big question that really needs answering is: How do we move people away from areas that are disaster prone?"

The former shows why the latter is impossible. Quite the opposite of encouraging people to move away, it allows people and local authorities to be lackadaisical about climate enhanced risk.

This segues to another recent article

The air conditioner is going 24/7," she said. . "The last two years it's been a hell of a lot hotter," she said.

Yes, once again the former making it worse. Those that can't afford AC (6-7 billion or so around the workd?) can just die ?

It's seems that's all we do, make it worse.

BRUSSELS, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Six European Union countries called on the European Commission to lower the $60 per barrel price cap put on Russian oil by G7 countries, arguing it would reduce Moscow's revenues to continue the war in Ukraine while not causing a market shock.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Sea Turtle Inc. helped 190 sea turtles affected by the recent cold stun. The organization announced that with improving weather conditions and the affected sea turtle's health, they hope for a quick recovery and potential release.

According to the National Park Service, a cold-stunned sea turtle is one that has become hypothermic due to severe cold water or weather. If water temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit a sea turtle can become lethargic and are unable to swim.

An unreleased Atari 2600 prototype has been found on a backup tape from Atari's Coin-Op Division. The game, titled 'Fish', is now available for anyone to play and explore.

The filename of the game is simply listed as Fish. Little is known about who programmed it or how it ended up on a VAX system. The only available information is that the potential build date was December 22nd, 1983, although this could also be when the game was copied onto the backup system.

In terms of gameplay, 'Fish' is surprisingly simple. Players take control of a small fish and must eat various creatures on-screen to progress through different waves. However, bigger fish will often appear to try to swallow you. The challenge lies in eating as much while avoiding being devoured.

See the original article for links to the download and YouTube gameplay footage.

What do you think about the significance of such a find for retro gaming and our understanding of early game development?

Almost 185 years later, Trevor Lithgow, a biochemist at Monash University, and a student in his charge visited that same lovely stream, bent down at its bank with an empty flask attached to a broom pole, and retrieved a double shot of water. They bundled the sample into a bag and drove it back to examine at their laboratory.

There, they mixed the sample with a culture of Klebsiella pneumoniae, a rod-shaped bacteria, prevalent in nature, and one that colonises human stomachs and lines our intestines. It forms snot-like colonies, gobbling up and fermenting lactose to fuel itself. Usually, Klebsiella is harmless.

But in certain situations, Klebsiella can establish itself outside the gut – and then it becomes a threat. “You would not want to have an infection that’s driven by Klebsiella,” Lithgow says.

Klebsiella is defined by the World Health Organization as a “priority pathogen”. Some prefer to call it a “superbug”. It’s a bacteria that poses a major threat to global health because some strains have evolved to evade our most potent drugs, in a process known as antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

First, this seemed to be the best community to place this. Second, this is an older article [February 2024] but it is very interesting nonetheless.

I want to get a head start on the technique d'informatique college course i am going to take next (school) year, and i figured comptia A+ is as good a place as any to start.

The title is self-explanatory, but i would like to add i would much prefer a book than a video. I am fine with paying for it, but then it would have to be physical. Video recommendations are also welcome though, because they could help anyone else who is asking themselves the same thing.

<>Mods, please remove this if it isn't open-ended enough
