So what does he want to be called? Just a rat? But - there are actual rats, which are already called rats. Unless those don't exist in this universe, "ratman" seems like a pretty reasonable term. He has both rat and humanoid features.

I came here to post this. Glad to see it's where it needs to be.

Definitely! Though I would say avoiding purposeful harm to their ego should be more than a nice gesture. That's just basic respect. Trying to avoid accidental harm, sure.

You already kinda said it—this is a problem with the relationship with your boss, not with the book.

With my boss, I can just say, "Honestly, this one was a miss for me. I appreciate the recommendation, and I wanted to give it a chance, but I didn't find much actionable substance in it. What did you get out of it?"

If you don't feel like you can do that, have a conversation with him about how he likes to receive feedback. If the answer is "he doesn't," it might be time to go boss shopping. But I doubt that will be the case.

The sound... the sound haunts my dreams

How is this unpopular? The company wouldn't exist if people didn't like eating there.

[–] MothBookkeeper@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yes. I am among the number that prefers it the way it is.

[–] MothBookkeeper@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

It could absolutely be implemented by Sync.

I will talk to rude people that harass the admins of a free service that way.

[–] MothBookkeeper@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You fucking donkey, did you read their comment before you replied to it? They aren't doing it just because they want to; there are legal implications.

[–] MothBookkeeper@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

SD slots aren't all that uncommon still.

"MothBookkeeper is the dictator of the world, and I completely trust his decisions."

Nevermind the logistics of that; power lives where people believe it does.

Then I could make multiple beneficial changes, such as:

  • Heavily taxing the rich
  • Enacting drastic climate policy
  • Banning paper stickers that rip as you try to take them off
  • Sending Mitch McConnell on a rocket into the sun

Would we hunt them?

In RIF, any time someone posted a YouTube video or a GIF from various GIF hosting sites, that was displayed directly in the feed, rather than needing to open the link. For articles, it would also choose an image from the article and embed that in the feed, so you could quickly get a sense of what the article was about as you were scrolling.

This is what I'm missing the most from RIF, more so than any button or setting, because it IS the core experience of browsing content in the app. It would open up Lemmy to a whole world of dynamic content, rather than just images and text posts.

I'm guessing this is also one of the more time consuming features to implement, and to that I say—devs, I don't have the skills to help you with this, but I will pay you for it. Right now, it's a barrier to fully enjoying Lemmy as much as Reddit, and I want to stick it to Reddit that badly. DM me if you're interested.

PS: All this is built on the assumption that this is a client-side problem. If it's not, I'll welcome a correction.

Welcome to Lemmy! Here's a simple guide for those migrating.

Lemmy is pretty much Reddit, with one major difference—it has instances. Imagine you could take all of Reddit's backend server code, copy and paste it, and host your own version of Reddit. Cool! Now you're an admin of Reddit 2. If the CEO of Reddit 1 ever does something mind-numbingly stupid, you and your users will be unaffected*. Reddit 1 and Reddit 2 are akin to Lemmy instances. Each instance has their own users and communities (subreddits).

Lemmy instances all work with each other*. Think of it like email. If I'm a Gmail user, I can still email Yahoo addresses, because Gmail, Yahoo, and all other email providers use a shared set of rules. All Lemmy instances also follow a shared set of rules (called a protocol, not that you need to know that). That means you can post to other instances, subscribe to their communities, upvote, downvote, and do all the things you can do on your instance.

The Lemmy app you use has a lot of control over how this is all laid out, so if you're finding it confusing, try different apps. As a former RIF user, I personally like Liftoff, which you can get in the Play Store, but other popular options are Jerboa, Thunder, Connect for Lemmy, wefwef, and Summit.

There's plenty more to say, but that should be enough to get started. Feel free to post questions in the comments! I may not know the answers to all of them, but I imagine others will.

*Oversimplification.

A couple things I'm struggling to do:

  • Search posts within a community (hence why I'm posting this, perhaps it's been answered before!)
  • While viewing a post on the home feed, go to the community it was posted in. I like viewing Everything so I can discover new communities, but if I find one I want to subscribe to, there doesn't appear to be any way to view the community. I'd expect it to be in the three-dot menu (it isn't), but tapping the name of the community in the header doesn't seem to work either; it only goes to the user. Is there any way to do this?

All the content, none of the Spez? Or, is it better if Lemmy stays distinct?
