Notepad++. Tons of features, macro capabilities, plenty of useful plugins. Its a great all around multi tool interface for file editing.

np++ is still my go to for ad hoc note taking. there are a million beautiful apps for this purpose, but nothing beats the fast startup of np++. Plus you can rename tabs without saving them and just keep them indefinitely. For some reason, no other app lets you do this, they all require saving the file.
Why would you ever want to not save a file?
I do this all the time. I pull up an editor, take notes on something I'm doing because I can't always fit it all in my mind I don't need to save the note cause, it was just a temporary place to store data/info/thoughts.

Total Commander.
I don't imagine working with Windows without it. Advanced search, mass rename, copy/paste, archive/dearchive, FTP client, file view... It comes with so many options and can be further enhanced via plugins.
It's worth every money. Or, if one can't spare enough, there are good, free replacements like MultiCommander.
I second Everything, it's pretty great. One of the things that irks me if I have to go to a different PC.
