*PM says Trump is trying to make it easier to annex Canada — but it won't work *

An unbowed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that Canada will hit back hard at the U.S. after President Donald Trump launched a North American trade war by slapping devastating 25 per cent tariffs on virtually all Canadian goods.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference on Parliament Hill, Trudeau said Trump is trying to prompt "a total collapse of the Canadian economy" because he thinks that will "make it easier to annex us."

But Trudeau said that will never happen because "when it comes to defending our great nation, there is no price we all aren't willing to pay."

Trudeau said Canada will not back down from a fight in the face of "completely bogus and completely unjustified" trade action that has the potential to ruin bilateral relations and prompt job losses, economic devastation and higher inflation on both sides of the border.

I mean, it is also designed to collapse the US economy too.

But yeah. Trudeau's speech is 100% essential listening. It is so rare that a politician just tells it like it is and he completely did.

Trudeau’s speech is 100% essential listening.

A link to that would be appreciated.

USA has become the enemy of democracy, NATO and traditional allies. But I'm sure EU and UK will be happy to strengthen relations, trade and even defense cooperation.
It may not be as convenient as having a big neighboring friend, but hopefully dampen the cost to Canada, while USA will have no such opportunities that I can see.
As long as this continues, it means the USA is an enemy, not just Trump and his administration, but USA as a whole.

I recommend that Canada block all oil exports to USA, this will increase gas prices at the pump, and Americans hate that.

[–] werefreeatlast@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Its $4.50/gal at the pump right now. Let's see that sucker go to $10.00 and let's see Mr T defend removing electric vehicle chargers from anywhere.

Oh no!!! $10 would make the whole country explode. We just want a new administration, not chaos. 😋

PS: American gas prices makes my head hurt, how many liters are in a gallon?
Ah well here we go:

1 gallon is 3.79 liter.
1 USD is 0.941 Eur

So 4.5 x 0.941 / 3.79 = €1.12 per liter.

That's almost half of here, so bringing it to $10 would only make it slightly more expensive than most European countries.
I think Canada can do that. 🍻

$60 bucks per fill up for a hybrid would suck. That's hobby money.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Last time I filled her up, shew was almost empty, and it was about 800DKK = $114 USD.

This is probably by American standards a fuel efficient car, with a 60 liter tank or almost 16 gallon.

Can we leave Mr. T out of this, the man who goes by that name still has my respect :)

[–] WoodScientist@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mr. T famously advocated for people to not drop out of school with the phrase, "I pity the fool who don't stay in school." I always imagined him taking this to absurd degrees. I imagine him harassing and shaming people to endlessly stay in school until they're enrolled in doctoral programs they have no interest in.

"Leave me alone Mr. T, I don't want to do a post-doc!"

"I PITY THE FOOL WHO DON'T STAY IN SCHOOL!"

He also stopped wearing most of his gold after being down in New Orleans helping clean up from Katrina. Said he felt it was wrong to be displaying such wealth when he was staring at people who had just lost literally everything.

It's designed to isolate the US from its allies, along with everything else Trump is doing

Good. Use the small words that Donnie can understand. Make the pissbaby throw another tantrum.

Murica is that shitty dog owner at the dog park who is sitting on the bench looking at their phone while their dog is running around bitting and trying to fuck the other dogs.

GET CONTROL OF YOUR FUCKING DOG!

We're an angry drunk running down the street with a shotgun trying to pick fights. Dangerous and repulsive, but all reasonable people can do is try to get out of the way until police arrive. Except there is no police in this geopolitical metaphor.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

The angry drunk is actually the police man

[–] Kaput@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Maybe everybody should go in the washroom together like that little town that had a bully problem.

[–] merdaverse@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Trudeau said he had a message for the president: "Donald, you are a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do."

When you have to talk to a fucking toddler

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

The way he switched to toddler-talk when adressing Trump was masterful.

Sorry for messing around with this post. Lemmy.world has a weird bug(?) where posts with CBC articles won't federate. Had to trick it.

[–] Late2TheParty@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

Well, joke's on you, Mr. Prime Minister. It's prolly gonna destroy ours first! So nyah!

😢

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

I'm glad the gloves are being thrown and they call it for what it is. That delicate diplomatic dance that lead up to this was clearly not working.
