Unpopular opinion maybe, but I would end AI

[–] celeste@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago

unpopular indeed

Currently building an omniscient AI that tortures copies of people who take Roko's basilisk seriously.

[–] flamingos@feddit.uk 23 points 4 days ago

Roko's basilisk is just Pascal's wager for people who think computers can solve racism.

[–] Amputret@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 4 days ago

Such a stupid modern day fairy tale.

[–] fracture@beehaw.org 4 points 3 days ago

However, there are differences between the two thought experiments. Roko's basilisk is so named because, if valid, it presents an information hazard: the basilisk only punishes those who knew about it but did not contribute. But ignorance of Pascal's wager does not protect one from divine punishment in the same way that ignorance of Roko's basilisk ensures one's safety.

bemused by how this portrays AI as at least somewhat more kind and understanding than it's equivalent diety

The concept of Roko's Baslisk is personally a "meh."

The concept that an idea/thought can be damaging as a whole, and potentially show no benefit whatsoever, doing only harm as it spreads... that's terrible to think about, and my brain can only handle so much dissonance.

Also, I've heard someone list out why they attend church/label themselves as religous, and it was literally just Pascal's wager. Ugh.

I guess I'm just stuck being completely ok with death as a concept, and have to assume most people are horrified by it, by default. It's pretty awkward when someone mentions that human brains continue to function several seconds after decapitation, to be an edgelord, and my genuine fascination with the concept makes them uncomfortable. 😮‍💨

I kinda hate knowing that the end just feels like nothing though, to be honest. It's kinda disappointing. Sorry if that just ruined any death enjoyer or hell connoisseur's day. At least there's like... idk life or some shit before that part, I guess.

I hate Rokos Basilisk. One of the few thoughts that can probably break your brain.

Not really "one of the few." Variations of this idea have existed for millenia. It's just eternal judgment for atheists.

Oh, didn't realize the thought already had an established name

look up Pascal's Wager, and compare and contrast with Roko's Basilisk.

"atheists" partaking in a cult revolving around the idea of magitech homonculus gods, at least.

Okay, the meme is true, but the Wikipedia page read like nonsense?

[–] universalfriend@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

and the theory itself was dismissed as nonsense, including by Yudkowsky himself.[1][6][7]

[–] araneae@beehaw.org 1 points 2 days ago

Yud dismissing it makes it seem more plausible in retrospect
