Oh cool, anyone with foreign allegiances is going to oppose war, this is a good thing!

Oh it's a nazi. God dammit.

People elect representatives to represent them, not to compromise and pass the opposition's agenda.

It's forgivable if the representative failed to obtain enough power, but if they have literally any means at their disposal and don't use it, an unwillingness to use all the power the people gave them to do what they elected them to do is a betrayal of those people.

Even so, I’m not sure I can agree that the best solution to dealing with the right is to fight the centrists first

We aren't able to use electoralism to fight the right as long as the political platform and messaging of the democratic party is 95% the same as the republican's.

The criticisms of the dem party don't amount to "let the right win", they amount to "the DNC prevents any political resistance to the right, they either need to be coup'd or destroyed if we want to stop the right from winning"

Israel, and AIPAC is just an extension of the US government. The US supports Israel because it allows them to threaten the rest of the middle east and keep cheap resources and labor flowing out.

This is bad for the people who live in America (and the middle east), but it is good for the capitalist class the US represents.

I just have a fear I might mess up somehow and start a fire or something

It takes some effort to start a fire. Most oils flash points are >600 F, which you might get a pan to to sear a steak, but to heat a pan of oil for deepfrying or something to >600 F, which would be a dangerous situation, requires you to continue heating it after it started billowing smoke between ~350F and ~525.

In any case, if you manage to have an oil fire, say by spilling some on the burner, just let it burn out if it's a small amount or turn off the heat and throw a towel over it if it's like a cup's worth.

Minor burns aren't uncommon when you're learning, but that's just a very quick way to learn "wrap the handle of the cast iron you just took out of the oven with a towel so you don't grab it like a moron" or "use tongs to place things on hot oil so it doesn't splatter on your hand"

I think they’re suggesting that, if you think what you’re seeing now is “unlimited support,” you’ll have a pretty shocking 2025.

Every weapon congress allowed, the US sent to Israel, and the US used its standing military to prevent anyone else from stopping Israel. The Biden admin has done literally nothing to limit Israel's genocide and has used the military and diplomatic power to ensure that it continues.

We had a shitty choice to make

We didn't choose shit, the democrats made choices at every opportunity that lowered turnout. Genocide lowers turnout. Saying you're going to appoint republicans to your cabinet lowers turnout. Pledging to shut down the border and build the wall lowers turnout. Means testing all of your campaign promises lowers turnout. Like anyone who's been paying attention, I spent the last 4 years telling anyone who'd listen that if the democrats do this shit, Trump will win in 2024, and now somehow it's everyone's fault except the democrats.

Are you suggesting that if the dems won, they would have stopped the unlimited support for Israel's genocide?

Unless there's a coup in the DNC, we're going to see a repeat of this week in 2026 and 2028.

If the democrats had learned anything at all, they would stop all arms shipments and sanction Israel right now so they can credibly say to voters they want the same things.

you have been very intolerant in lots of cases. U have called for acts of violence to be enacted.

Violence to stop the harm of a marginalized group isn't the same as violence by a hate group against a marginalized group.

Or do you think fighting a transphobe is the same as a transphobe hatecriming a trans person?

I thought we'd established, tolerating nazis is intolerance.

Remember when Biden's admin said they'd cut off aid if Israel didn't let aid into gaza and stop killing humanitarian workers, but set the deadline for just after the election?

This proves it was a cynical ploy and they never intended to limit their support of Israel's genocide.

FEMA camps (lemmy.ml)
submitted 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) by alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml to c/showerthoughts@lemmy.world

Back during the Bush and Obama years, I remember hearing so many right-wing conspiracies about FEMA camps.

Why didn't anyone ask "If FEMA has the ability to set up camps and transport large numbers of people, why aren't they doing that every time there's a big hurricane or wildfire?"

Looks like it's having a measurable effect.

The bill in question is the one Biden tried to pass, but was blocked by republicans after Trump called it a bad bill, despite containing only things the republicans want.

It would enable the president to shut down the border and gives billions to ICE, CPB, US Marshals, etc to increase detention capacity, train additional personnel, etc. It also gave billions to Israel and Ukraine.

Kamala gonna have the immigrant vote locked up.

Among other changes to immigration law, the measure would make it more difficult to gain asylum in the United States and increase detentions and deportations of those crossing into the country without authorization. It would also effectively close the border altogether if the average number of migrants encountered by immigration officials exceeded a certain threshold — an average of 5,000 over the course of a week or 8,500 on any given day. The bill also would give the president power to close the border unilaterally if migrant encounters reach an average of 4,000 per day over a week.
