Hey Folks

Just a quick note to let you all know about some changes in the lemm.ee admin team. After discussing things with the other admins, we've decided to shuffle around our roles a bit.

Up until now, I’ve been the head admin at lemm.ee - handling infrastructure, maintaining rules and policies, and acting as the main contact person for the admin team.

However, I’ve come to realize that this role has taken a toll on me. While I still love the idea of Lemmy and everything it stands for, being an admin has slowly drained the joy I once had for the platform. The occasional negative experiences have been increasingly difficult for me to shake off. For the past several months, I’ve found myself hesitating to check my DMs or the moderation queue, simply because I’m bracing for some new drama that I no longer have the energy to manage.

After some conversations with the team, we’ve agreed on a plan to ensure my burnout doesn’t negatively impact the instance:
  1. I am stepping down as head admin of lemm.ee.
  2. The new main contact person for the admin team will be @EllaSpiggins@lemm.ee.
  3. I’ll continue to maintain and update the infrastructure behind the scenes.
  4. The rest of the admin team will now handle all moderation issues, managing our policies, and any general admin communications.

It’s been an honor to serve as your head admin, and I’m incredibly grateful for the amazing people I’ve met here. I’m excited to stay involved in a capacity that works better for me and allows me to enjoy this community once again.

See you around!

Delegation is important, and I respect how much work being both head admin and head tech would be. Good on you for prioritizing your health! And welcome to the role, EllaSpiggins.

It’s my unbiased opinion that .ee is the best place in the fediverse, and this is largely your doing. Keeping a level head, and applying consistent management is no small task.

So for what it’s worth, thank you.

And shout out to all the other moderators that do what they do, and to those who are stepping up to keep this place what it is.

Thank you for your service :) love the regular updates you do. Hope this instance keeps being financially viable for years to come :)

Thank you for all the support you've given to lemmy, and I'm especially grateful for the support you gave me when lemmy.zip had a wobble a while back. You're a top guy and you deserve happiness 😊

See you around lemmy!

[–] Sundial@lemm.ee 27 points 1 week ago

Sorry to hear how bad it's been affecting you. Thank you for everything you do and hope this change helps you.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 1 week ago

Yeah, this role requires a ridiculously thick skin unfortunately. So much drama flows up.

I hope you plan to still be around to "dogfood" the experience as that's quite important as well.

@sunaurus@lemm.ee I have really appreciated all of your hard work. I think you've been doing a great job and am happy to throw hands in the comments for you.

Do what's best for you and thank you for your service!

[–] fossphi@lemm.ee 18 points 1 week ago

Sucks to hear that, but completely understandable. Thanks a bunch for making this one of the better (if not the best) instances. Hopefully not too much changes on the moderation/federation policy :)

People don't realize how much work goes into us having nice things. Thanks for all you've done and will do.

[–] blind3rdeye@lemm.ee 14 points 1 week ago

This is a thoughtful and well motivated decision. Thanks for creating and keeping lemm.ee going. And thanks to Ella for stepping up for what is famously a pretty stressful roll, for the benefit of all of us ordinary users.

[–] crawancon@lemm.ee 14 points 1 week ago

you've done an amazing job and I'm sorry for the toll it's taken on you.

focus on you - the beauty of lemmy / defederation is that no one company or person can take it down. lemm.ee is a great instance that showcases at least some of the openness and maturity needed on the internet.

[–] FlihpFlorp@lemm.ee 14 points 1 week ago

Thank you! You take care and do what you need to!

[–] Vent@lemm.ee 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ceasing client relations to focus solely on building cool shit? Who can blame you??

I think you dropped this: 👑

Thank you for all the work you've put into creating and keeping this place the best run and maintained general-purpose Lemmy instance. Take care of yourself first and foremost and hopefully we'll see you around.

Good luck stepping into the new role EllaSpriggins!

[–] Foni@lemm.ee 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thank you so much for your work and I hope you find the joy of participating in the community again. It is a shame that people do not always value voluntary work in collaborative forums.

I would also like to thank @ellaspiggins@lemm.ee for taking on this responsibility, for my part, I promise not to cause any more problems than strictly necessary.

[–] EllaSpiggins@lemm.ee 11 points 1 week ago

Only necessary problems allowed pls

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago

Sorry to hear you were going through all that. Take it easy and at a comfortable place.

Just remember that one of the biggest reasons lemm.ee became such a cool place to hang out online is because of you, and that's not going to go away just because you're reducing your involvement. Thank you.

Ella take it easy too, even if you've got big shoes to fill I'm sure you'll do great!

[–] JudahBenHur@lemm.ee 11 points 1 week ago

[–] Jourei@lemm.ee 9 points 1 week ago

That's certainly relatable. Very good that you could switch around like this to a more comfortable duty!

I for one welcome our new ~~overlord~~ head admin.

[–] Twitches@lemm.ee 8 points 1 week ago

Than you very much for your work. Please take care of yourself.

[–] milicent_bystandr@lemm.ee 7 points 1 week ago

Thank you so much for setting this up for us and making it a great instance to be on!

Wishing you the best in taking a rest, and I think we all appreciate your honesty and decent human-ness - that you've neither given up and sent the thing down in flames, nor turned power-crazed and angry to deal with it all.

Cheers!

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 5 points 1 week ago

It's a sad day, but (mental) health comes first.

If I ever see you in the street, I'll buy you a beer or 2. If I still recognize your face from your avatar by then :)

[–] Chewget@lemm.ee 5 points 1 week ago

Burn out is a bad thing, don't get burned out. :)

[–] scytale@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

Thanks for making lemmee awesome and it’s good to hear that you’ll still be around in some capacity. I’m optimistic of your confident endorsement of the admin team so hopefully the quality of the instance stays the same (or gets better!). Good luck!

Love you, Sunaurus! (altho that's kind of an American expression which perhaps... doesn't mix culture-wise very well in terms of where you're from, haha *sweating*)

It’s been an honor to serve...

Myself, It's been a *total* honor to be part of your excellent (incredibly carefully-run) instance. For my part, I've tried to bring positive light to lemm.ee specifically, and Lemmy as a whole, across the last 15+mos. So thank you *SINCERELY* for giving me that chance, plus for expediently handling a couple of distressing issues that I barked about, here and there!

In terms of financial gratitude, it seemed like last time I tried, I wasn't able to get my PayPal to get y'all a donation (in retrospect I think I should have tried via GitHub?), but let me know if there's anything else (that or otherwise) I can do for you, please.

Also, via my occasional interactions with the new lead, I've had a quite satisfactory time interacting with @EllaSpiggins@lemm.ee, and I want to greatly thank Ella for that, too. ^^

Just... here it is:
thank you SO MUCH, you wonderful folks, you. ❤️

[–] vatlark@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

There are a lot of ugly details to make any good thing happen. Thank you, everyone, for all the hard work and take care.

[–] meep_launcher@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago

Thank you for all you've done! You should be proud of your work.

I had to step down as mod of the mapporncirclejerk subreddit for health reasons too. When I eventually moved over here, I decided to start up !cartographyanarchy@lemm.ee and now I feel better about moderating having had time to recoup.

If you are like me, remembering to rest can be a difficult thing to do. Just know that taking time off is so important to becoming your best you. ❤️
