Daniel Craig laughed off a question asking him who he would love to see play James Bond next.

I'd like to see period adaptations of the original books. Do it as a streaming show, 6 episodes per book or something like that.

Some of the movies have been pretty close. Dr. No, Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, Casino Royale...

Others were LAUGHABLY off the mark (cough) Moonraker (cough).

[–] dustyData@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'd love that too. But those books have become essentially a parody of themselves in today's context. Without the 60's mental POV, they're nonsensical, racist, rapey and sexist. You'd end up in a unironical Austin Powers. I mean, the books are literarily fun fiction to read. But let's not pretend they're not cringey white male power fantasies. Spies were the coldwar's mall ninjas. I'd rather revisit the spy kids universe.

How many of the books have you read?

[–] dustyData@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

All of them* and seen all the films as well. I'm an extraordinary fan of the series. But I'm also not delusional and can hold a critical view of the entertainment media I consume and regard them from the POV of the context that produced them. Casino Royale is still my favorite. Thunderball is still the goofiest shit Fleming wrote.

Now you tell me your five favorite songs by the famous band and prove you are not a poser. /s

  • I haven't read any of the post-Fleming books yet.

Were those books even good? I always thought the character outgrew its source. I never heard they were more than fairly straight forward spy novels but nothing special

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I found them eminently readable. They have a book to book continuity missing from the films.

“Please stop asking me!”

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Can he put in a good word for me? The world needs a Bond that's an overweight but otherwise average-looking guy with an American accent, right?

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 days ago

You're a shoo-in for the next Felix Leiter.

I just want James Bond to be fun again. Casino Royale and Skyfall are absolutely amazing, but the other three are HUGE stinkers. Even when past James Bond movies sucked they usually were super fun to watch, like A View to a Kill or Die Another Day. Quantum of Solace, Spectre and No Time to Die are easily the worst James Bond movies because they suck and have NO fun in them.

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

No Time To Die was solid, but it was patching issues as a sequel

[–] turkalino@lemmy.yachts 0 points 5 days ago

By “fun” you mean Bond being a chauvinist pos? Yeah nah, I don’t think “why do Chinese women taste different” would do well

[–] teft@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I thought Idris Elba was going to play Bond next.

I think he would be an amazing James Bond. He’s suave and handsome enough.

[–] johannesvanderwhales@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I think that was just a fan casting. He'd be a good fit but I think that he's probably too old for it from the film exec point of view. They will want to get 4+ movies out of whoever they cast.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

Yeah, sadly I agree. Would still love to see it though. He would be brilliant in the role, even if it was only one movie

[–] Codilingus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

He's unfortunately too old, since being Bond is years of commitment. People who get heavily into guessing the new Bond figured that one out.

Guys please be positive. Lemmy reminds me of forum time internet, why so negative.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.cafe 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Feel free to have a look at !movies@lemm.ee for another movies community

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago

Thanks for the suggestion. I am subscribed to both.

[–] Artyom@lemm.ee 0 points 6 days ago

If it's not Lashana Lynch, then it kinda undermines half of the story of the final movie.

Not to say studios don't love ruining their own stories...

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world -1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

It will end up being someone lousy. The Bond franchise is like Star Trek films. You get good bond/lousy bond/good bond cycles over and over. They’ll go for someone pretty, it will flop after one or two movies, and then they’ll hire a good actor again.

Craig Good
Brosnan Bad
Dalton Good
Moore Bad
Lazenby Good
Niven Bad
Connery Good

Does not compute.

[–] grayhaze@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'd argue that every Bond has been good in their own way. What brought some of them down is the poor writing, not what the actor brought to the role.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago

*cough* Dr. Who *cough*

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world -1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)
  • Connery good
  • Lazenby awful
  • Moore good
  • Dalton bad
  • Brosnan good
  • ???
  • Craig good

I don’t really count Niven and I can’t explain the gap between Brosnan and Craig. Maybe it has something to do with switching on the superconducting supercollider. I’m also still disappointed Halle Berry as Jinx didn’t get a spin off movie.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Why would he care? He has an entire acting career that doesn’t revolve around Bond. He doesn’t have any sort of control over the franchise.

Why would anyone ask him?

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Because the media loves to pretend anyone is an expert on everything. Assigning outsized significance to someone's words if they've ever been mentioned in any other nedia before. And sometimes even if they haven't.
