Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Oh it could. It just wasn't.

No we haven’t been here. Last time was just prep work for this. And we didn’t dismantle that work. We’re primed to efficiently implement the wishes of tyrants.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 19 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Well, we have been here before, but they picked the wrong comparison point.

The correct parallel is the Weimar Republic in the early 1930s.

And yes: I’m saying this is likely the inception of the first American Reich (or whatever it ends up being called), only this time it’ll be theocratic too, so the hardcore fanatics will also know they’ve got god on their side. Wcgw.

Or Mordor...

While I don’t disagree, that’s fiction, not history. We’re talking about historical parallels.

Exactly, last time the question of "can we just shoot the protesters" was answered with "no".

This time the answer is "obviously yes".

[–] snack_pack_rodriguez@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The answer is we shouldn't be protesting we should be doing other things that im not willing to detail in a public form.

It's wise not to share the details, but the broad strokes are important: Information is the game. Getting it, distributing it, analyzing it. Successful authoritarian regimes always strive to keep people uninformed, terrified and unable to act.

Defend the information networks at all costs. Only with good information can we effectively do those things that it's not wise to detail in public.

Please tell me why we shouldn't all just collectively kill ourselves then? All of these comments on reddit and lemmy are making me think that none of it is worth even being alive anymore. Why shouldn't we just kill ourselves if it's going to happen and there's nothing we can do about it?

[–] LucidNightmare@lemm.ee 17 points 6 days ago

I think once we start seeing people being dragged out into the streets, put into camps, or whatever crazy shit they plan on doing, that will be the time to make this kind of decision. Right now, there may be some kind of response that we can take that might help. It's a toss up right now, but just know, your life is valuable, and to not doing anything drastic until the first signs of the regime come into light.

For what it's worth to you, I do have a last ditch plan for myself if I truly do see this death march in action, but I will not enact it unless it is truly the last option I have.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 11 points 6 days ago

At least take out a few Nazis with you.

[–] 7112@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Think of it like being diagnosed with cancer. It can be a death sentence but you can also recover with treatment.

We are facing the truth that nothing is permanent in history but change doesn't always mean death. It's very scary, but live your life. You have today, make it mean something.

[–] GhiLA@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Nothing is permanent in history.

Climate change: hold my beer

[–] Moobythegoldensock@lemm.ee 2 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Climate change isn’t permanent. It has changed before and will change again. This will all sort itself out in the next several million years, you’ll see.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

You're right, it will eliminate the life it needs to in order for the planet to continue living.

That means us.

[–] GhiLA@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

Unless you intend to live several million years, eternity might as well be 1000.

[–] djsoren19@yiffit.net 5 points 6 days ago

What use is there in taking your own life?

If you cannot flee, then prepare to fight.

[–] ElcaineVolta@kbin.melroy.org 3 points 6 days ago

a fair question

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Look into local mutual aid groups and do what you can for those around you. That will go a long way to help you and your mental health, plus having a strong network means you can help when things start to get bad.

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 2 points 6 days ago

You're going to spend time and resources setting up hot meal deliveries for the elderly in your neighborhood, and then Skip The Dishes is going to lobby the government to shut you and everyone else with the same idea down because the elderly should just be paying them to deliver their food, and what you're doing is anti-business.

You're going to google John Brown Gun Club and that'll be enough for them to put you on a list for closer monitoring. If you actually attend a meeting you'll be picked up in an unmarked van driven by hand picked agents from the department of corrections and ICE.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 49 points 6 days ago (1 children)

We’ve collectively and decisively lept into the arms of authoritarianism.

America will get what it wants.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 41 points 6 days ago (1 children)

And the rest of us will get what we don't want.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

Sounds like a follow-up to the announcement 🤦

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

We have never been here before. I keep having to remind people that the Supreme Court has granted the president essentially dictatorial powers. and now a rapist, a 34 time convicted felon, who’s jailed children, defrauded students, stolen from charity, stolen our national secrets, promised to release violent criminals, one who’s praised dictators, while expressing his intentions to be one, and promising his supporters that they will not have to vote again.

There are no checks and balances left, this man now controls all three branches of the government because the other two have both shown repeatedly that they will let him get away with anything.

Come this January, democracy is dead, we will be living under a trump dictatorship.
