Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Yes, it's called turning yourself in, and people do it because they feel guilty, or they know they're going to be caught anyways, and are hoping cooperation earns them a lesser sentence.

If you’ve committed a crime, you can always turn yourself in. If you really felt like it, you could even make them come out to you to pick you up.

A “citizen’s arrest” usually requires the suspect commit a crime (usually a felony,) in your presence and requires a certain amount of timeliness. (Ie you can’t later decide to arrest them.)

Basically, you’d only be allowed to detain them until cops arrived, and to be totally honest, is not something you really should be doing- just let the perps go. It’s safer for you, and there’s legal risks if you fucked up and what they didn’t wasn’t a crime or wasn’t a serious enough crime.

Yes, a person can decide to hand themselves over to the police.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

True.

But I mean less like a surrender, more like they call the law on themself and then handcuff themself..

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I mean, why?

At most I could see the value of locking yourself in a room for protection as waking up from a psycotic episode where you have attacked others and fear for your own life.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

There's no why, just figured I'd ask a silly question. Bored I am..

You can do anything to yourself, with few exceptions.

Werewolfing comes to mind.

If you know you're gonna do something bad/stupid/dangerous/etc you can sequester yourself in an attempt to prevent it.

Getting high is a popular way to werewolf yourself.

✅ Check

Technically speaking, I think to arrest someone you must take them into your custody. You can't take yourself into the custody of yourself since, as an individual, you're already in your own custody by the nature of free will.

[–] egrets@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

"Am I being detained?", my inner monologue screams.

[–] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Surrender? Citizen arrest mean one citizen arrest another to turn them to police, to arrest oneself is to surrender i guess.

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, I suppose.

But more like crazy person level, like call the cops on themself for stealing a candy bar or something similarly stupid, then handcuff themself to a bench or light pole or something..

[–] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Technically speaking it's still umm citizen arrest but in general I think it still count as surrender. Different term for different situation i guess.

[–] orcrist@lemm.ee 5 points 2 weeks ago

The specific rules vary by state. Where do you live, what are you going to do, and can you stream it for us?

[–] spiffy_spaceman@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

One of my old bosses once went to the police station when he was drunk or high (or both) to complain about something crazy, and maybe about a crazy person trying to drive his car that he was actually driving. I think they talked him into spending the night while they checked it out. He had issues.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

"Hey man, yagottahelpme....hic.......there's a crazy guy, good guy, smart guys, who's really really drunk, and he's trying to drive his car....my car.....a car.......he's trying to drive, and that's a bad idea. He can barely walk, and I just really gotta pee ....He's gotta pee so bad! And he's wearing a red shirt, and has a kissable face. This guy FUUUUUCKS, but right now shouldn't drive...."

"Yeah. Hey, let's get you nice and situated on this here bench, inside this cell. Don't worry. You and your red shirt will be perfectly fine...."

"Zzzzzzzz.......Zzzzzzzz......Zzzzzzz"

[–] spiffy_spaceman@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Honestly, this is probably almost exactly how it went down

[–] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

If you citizens arrested yourself then the criminal would also be holding the arrester hostage.
