Representative Clay Higgins has taken Donald Trump and J.D. Vance’s threat against Haitian immigrants to the next level.

Republican Representative Clay Higgins made a racist attack on Haitians Wednesday, referencing several racist tropes and the debunked pet-eating conspiracy from Ohio.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), the Louisiana congressman said, “These Haitians are wild. Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters … but damned if they don’t feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP.”

Higgins was apparently upset that a Haitian American nonprofit organization took advantage of an Ohio law allowing citizens to file affidavits for criminal offenses, and filed charges against Donald Trump and J.D. Vance for spreading the debunked rumor that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, captured and ate pets, ducks, and geese.

Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters...

That's literally Louisiana.

Source: I lived in Louisiana during my teens and college years.

Live in Lousy-ana, Can confirm.

What a complete wankstain

[–] Suavevillain@lemmy.world 58 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The only thing Trump has done for Republicans is give them the confidence to be openly racist in public.

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's really all they ever wanted, seeing how ravenously they support him

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Oh, they fucking love not having to pretend to be decent human beings any more. As long as he enables that, he has their undying loyalty.

Nice of them to keep going mask off in the last month.

[–] WoahWoah@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah because it doesn't matter. Republicans are a coin flip to win the house, win the presidency, and are already likely to win the senate. Why would they stop being awful?

Moral consternation on the left doesn't change the fact that half the country appreciates and endorses this kind of rhetoric. And the party that makes these comments is quite possibly going to run all three branches of government in a few months and already run the Supreme Court.

We're losing. In many respects, we've already lost. We're just going to lose more.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 8 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Defeatism is the first step towards losing. Personally, even if you assume that will happen, I'd suggest looking up guns that use NATO standard ammunition and getting some practice in while you still can.

The fact that their polls aren't tanking is a very bad sign for our democracy.

Surprised he didn't call them uppity. Racist pos.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

He did, in different words. Saying they "feel all sophisticated now" means the same thing.

[–] zephorah@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago (5 children)

I thought legal immigration was what they wanted.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ah, I see the source of your confusion and I’m happy to help clear it up! The mistake you made was believing a single word that comes out of the mouth of a Republican.

Hope this helps.

[–] zephorah@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

“Alternative facts”.

The moment Kelly Conwa said that 8? years ago I knew we were in the upside down.

[–] billiam0202@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

"Legal immigration" is the foot-in-the-door excuse they use to ban all immigration.

Just like how "returning abortion to the states" is trying to "ban abortion nationally."

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Absolutely! As long as immigration for non-white people is illegal.

With how hard Republicans project, I assume dog was served at the RNC.

[–] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 12 points 2 days ago

Not just dog—abducted pet dogs.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 60 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Well, maybe at the after party. RFK was hosting,

They're all butthurt about people getting up in arms at the South Dakota governor/VP hopeful.

[–] Myxomatosis@lemmy.world 90 points 2 days ago

our President and VP

Election isn’t until November, dumbass.

[–] Spitzspot@lemmings.world 42 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Epic POS. Louisiana, do better.

[–] ThrowawayInTheYear23@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That would require resurrecting Sherman.

Gerrymandering prevents that

[–] whotookkarl@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Citizen initiated ballot measure for a bipartisan drawn district map has helped fix that in other states. Definitely not easy but fixable.

[–] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Does Louisiana have a ballot initiative process?

Edit: They don't. I sense a trend in states with a long history of authoritarianism.

[–] newthrowaway20@lemmy.world 39 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

These white, Republican congressmen are wild. Cocaine fueled bingers, sex trafficking, Christofascism. Rape and disease. Nastiest leaders in the free world. Cults, wannabe gangsters. But damn if they don't feel emboldened now, attacking anyone they can.

[–] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago

"I can put up another controversial post tomorrow if you want me to. I mean, we do have freedom of speech. I’ll say what I want… It’s not a big deal to me. It’s like something stuck to the bottom of my boot. Just scrape it off and move on with my life.”

— Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA), quoted by CNN, digging in after deleting a post calling Haitian migrants “thugs” and “slapstick gangsters.”

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (3 children)

The Venn Diagram of Racist and repubs would be a circle with a slightly smaller circle inside it.

Not all repubs are racist, but damn if all racists are repubs. And yes, libertarians are included as repubs

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's because "libertarians" these days are just Republicans with a small sense of shame, or they wanna smoke weed.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Libertarians are repubs minus the religion

I'm sure there are a bunch of apolitical racists. Racists tend to be pretty dumb, and dumb people often think politics doesn't affect them.

Weird racist motherfuckers. The entire lot.

[–] WhatYouNeed@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (3 children)

It's voodoo, not vudu, you ignorant fuck

[–] troybot@midwest.social 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Actually he's referring to Vudu, the movie streaming app.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Those damn Haitians renting all the movies...

[–] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Actually, the Haitian version would be vodou. Voodoo is a related but distinct tradition that developed in the US.

[–] WhatYouNeed@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

You're both right and Higgins is the ignorant fuck. He was definitely referring to the US-developed tradition of voodoo, which is derived from vodou but not the same thing.
