Every time I see an unskippable ad, or a second ad, or fuck even 15 seconds of ads, or I just want audio, I open newpipe instead. Hopefully it keeps working.

Between SmartTube for my Chromecast, Vanced, and now ReVanced, I haven't seen an ad or sponsor on YouTube in years.

I don't know why, but it just doesn't work for me. Videos keep buffering at 10 sec mark when I'm logged in.

Edit: Thanks for suggestions guys. I updated the manager and microG and repatched and it works now.

[–] sylverstream@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 year ago

Happened to me too. I had to update Revanced, then it worked fine!

[–] Coeus@coeus.sbs 5 points 1 year ago

You need to download a newer version and repatch

[–] GroteStreet@aussie.zone 3 points 1 year ago

Last time that happened, either revanced or microG was out of date.

[–] J_C___@lemmy.place 0 points 1 year ago

Wait I thought that project was dead???

[–] Anamana@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

There's a Newpipe with Sponsorblock as well btw, on the izzyrepo. It's so convenient

[–] lemminer@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Let them make their move. We would come up with some solutions 😜

[–] Lazylazycat@lemmy.world 40 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Fuck Google. Fuck YouTube. Let's build the internet we want and deserve 🥰

[–] BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one 18 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Imagine a federated YouTube that load-balances server to server and every single individual instance was utilized for data storage and playback depending on the location of the viewer.

Everyone pitches in, servers have stats that can be looked up.

Imagine it.

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Everyone pitches in

Aaaaaand that idea is dead in the water.

Something like Youtube requires way more bandwidth, storage and processing power per user than something like reddit. Which is why they're trying to make more money.

Lemmy works because it doesn't take all that much in resources to run an instance, and having single digit percentage of your users chipping in can be enough. A decentralized YouTube would not work quite the same, and you'd have a hard time keeping the creators paid too.

[–] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

I have servers that are seeding massive torrents 24/7. I have hundreds of terabytes uploaded.

Let me load balance Peertube instances, damnit.

[–] Lazylazycat@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I sense endless buffering... and yet... I want it.

[–] Toribor@corndog.social 1 points 1 year ago

I think you might be underestimating the difficulty in delivering video at the scale of YouTube.

[–] krzschlss@lemmy.fmhy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

It’s not just the tools you use, it’s the social/economic system those tools create that needs to change. To destroy the current system of profit and exploitation we all need to use different tools. Like crowbars, baseball bats, molotovs… Otherwise the Power and Influence will sell you yet another distraction in form of political discourse or a war somewhere where you choose between imaginary good and evil.

[–] lemminer@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 year ago

Here comes the censorship

[–] Naich@kbin.social 21 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I never knew about this. Thanks, Streisand effect.

[–] briongloid@aussie.zone 11 points 1 year ago

There is also a fork that supports SponsorBlock

[–] zxo@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

NewPipe is one of my favorite apps, it is probably better than Invidious or Piped in my opinion because you don't have to worry about a server being rate limited.

[–] retrolasered@lemmy.zip 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I havent used google search in a few years now, duckduckgo for me

[–] kernelPanic@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Same, just the other day I googled piratebay on my friends computer and the original website is just not there. Such censorships are unknown to us

[–] marilynia@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

First time hearing of Newpipe. Looks really good!

[–] cakeistheanswer@lemmy.fmhy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

Good to see Streisand in full Effect!

[–] Affidavit@aussie.zone 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Did they backtrack already? newpipe.net is literally the first result when I Google it.

[–] J_C___@lemmy.place 3 points 1 year ago

Seems like it, same here

[–] nostalgicgamerz@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

FYI: it’s still on GitHub. It’s just the search results removed. Honestly…. I’m unsure why they did go full douche and do a DMCA on the GitHub.

[–] zxo@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 year ago

Good ol' enshittification. I'm glad that I haven't used Google Search for a couple of years now, things serm to be getting even worse on it than other search engines. Fuck Google.

[–] J_C___@lemmy.place 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

While I agree this is a horrible precedent to set, the real problem we will start to see as this post points out will be the clones popping up pushing malware APKs

[–] zxo@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

There's already a malware variant on Google Play (but I don't know how long it's been there).

[–] hyazinthe@feddit.de 12 points 1 year ago

Tool to bypass YouTube security measures allowing users to illegally download our copyrighted content.

Are there really security measures to avoid downloading youtube videos?

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

All the links seem to be there for me

[–] TwinTurbo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

To me it shows the GitHub repo (at the top of the results), but not newpipe.net.

[–] Melody@lemmy.one 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I would condemn Google; but it clearly states that a record label is targeting NewPipe; and not Google.

Is this a very chilling action for Google to take? You bet your ass it is! While I won't blame them outright for this; it is now blatantly evident that Google has stopped spending legal money to defend against DMCA actions against things that they or their parent company Alphabet clearly do not like.

This is a blatant violation of Google and by extension Alphabet's founding ethos; which is to "Do No Evil." The 'Enshittification of Alphabet' has reared it's ugly head again and it's evident that is running through the company unchecked.

I recommend people continue to use projects like NewPipe, Invidious and Piped as well as federated alternates such as PeerTube. I would also urge all large creators to begin archival of their footage on PeerTube itself if possible and to look into spinning up a PeerTube instance for their content to be hosted ON...so that their content does not vanish with Youtube as it steadily "Enshitifies" itself to death. Do this now while the Youtube monetization train is still chugging so that you can get your fans onboard and willing to fund the instance so they don't lose your content.

A note to creators: It will be easier to run off of Patreon and sponsors when on PeerTube; once Youtube has fallen.

DuckDuckGo to another search engine

sorry not sorry

[–] XpeeN@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Honestly I barely use bare youtube anymore, even with uBO enabled.

I can get why those greedy comp trying to fight. THEY CAN TRY

[–] UnknownQuantity@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Did Google asked for the DMCA against Newpipe? Just wondering.

[–] bxyrk@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 year ago

Of course I went and redownloaded newpipe because I was reminded of it's existence lol. It's been a pretty good option for a while now. I mean I DO have YouTube premium and almost always use YouTube music for listening to streaming music, but the extreme ease of downloading is always a plus. A lot of the content creators I follow I like to give their videos traffic, but for a download on mobile, works great

[–] Jackolantern@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (4 children)

I’m new to this. Is newpipe available on apple?

[–] retrolasered@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 year ago

Android only. Apple doesnt like good things under its umbrella

[–] zxo@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 year ago

There is a similar app named Yattee, but it's not exactly the same. It should still work well to watch videos privately, though.

[–] nostalgicgamerz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Kinda…. You need to be jailbroken or trollstore exploit and you can have uYou

[–] TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I’ve never heard of it until now myself, so I’m curious too.

[–] cavalleto@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago
[–] KrimsonBun@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can newpipe even take legal action? isn't the project itself against YouTube's terms of service? I say this as a newpipe user myself that depends fully on them to watch youtube.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

An illegal DMCA request is actionable. IDK how likely that anything actually comes of such actions financially, but there have been injunctions granted to reverse requests that aren't reasonable.

[–] yaaaaayPancakes@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

It appears to be resolved now. I'm getting newpipe.net, the Github repo, and the FDroid store entry as the top three hits. I am glad Louis posted this video for attention to the DMCA problem, but it appears that things are not as dire as he makes it out to be.

[–] wakamo@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

It has been resolved can search "Newpipe" and I get real site at #1 result.
