Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

This isn't unpopular.....this is just facts. Youtube celebrities are just celebrities with a much lower ceiling of celebrity.

They come in, they're popular, they get views, and then they're gone with nobody remembering who they are. I assume my niece, who is 13, knows who Tom Hanks is. I'm unclear if she's ever seen his movies, but I would feel confident that she knows who he is. When you think about it, Tom Hanks hasn't had any big movies the past 10 years. But the movies he is known for are generally classics.

Now compare that with the annoying orange, or "HEEEY IT'S FREEEDDDDDD". I assume she'd look at me with a tilted head if I asked her about them. Technically she was alive for them, but she was probably still in diapers. And they've left no lasting impression on pop culture.

But all this drama on social media? Yeah....it's the same thing. Just the same as two popular in their school 6th graders having drama. Sure, they're popular in their school, but do you think anyone outside that school cares what Josh and Edward are beefing about?

Same concept, even smaller ceiling for celebrity.

I assume my niece, who is 13, knows who Tom Hanks is.

So one of my “oh shit I’m old” moments, 10 years ago was a 19 year old friend of my neighbor who had no idea that the Jackson 5 were related to Michael Jackson. He thought they were “Michael Jackson and his 4 black friends”. So, check that assumption lol

Won't upvote because I can't believe this is unpopular!

I think you're right, but you're just doing it by classifying popular YouTubers as not celebrities.

I would argue that fame from social media alone (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc) is still fame and enough to make a person a celebrity. It's the same picture.

Just like a person can be made bitter and angry by the clouds over head as they shake their fist at them and yell.

Oh I'm ABSOLUTELY angry by the rain clouds! But only one specific historical rain cloud. November 2nd, 2016. Those rain clouds fucking still make me sad! Screw you, Chicago! Bringing your damn rainy weather clouds!

As someone who is involved in that space, I agree and don't find that to be an unpopular opinion. Most people ive talked to about it understand they are one in the same, they just find youtube drama more interesting because some of them really are just normal people.

Ngl, this is kinda my favorite form of trash TV somewhat these days. I watch a lot of YouTube content but don’t really keep up with specific creators so much.

However, there is a channel I used to follow called Illuminaughti and she got ousted for being a scumbag. I got drown into watching that whole debacle and now I do follow a couple of YouTube drama channels. Good to throw on for some mild entertainment in the background occasionally.

I've heard similar a lot. Not necessarily the exact phrasing you used, but close enough when it wasn't essentially a difference in which term was used instead of "stupid"

But I agree. Pretty much any drama is stupid to at least a small degree, because drama is stupid. You handle a problem, or you don't; drama is just being loud for attention, be it from the people involved, or hangers on.

The scale doesn't even matter. Small scale family drama is just as stupid as drama around a singer, or some YouTube talking head.
