I miss when I could buy an FPS and just have it. Perhaps people have been trained to expect a game like this to shut down quickly, which might lead to a vicious cycle where they stop playing it and paying into it, expecting their money to disappear and that they could have spent that time getting better at a game that's going to last.

I know this is an old geezer comment but I miss FPS games where you could configure and host your own server. To this day I can still boot and find Unreal Tournament (1999) servers with active lobbies.

I wish we could go back to this. It would certainly increase the longevity of some games.

Does Halo Infinite let players do this now? Or are you "only" able to run your own game/lobby on a dedicated cloud server?

It's a fun game but an ultra competitive market. Either show you're in it for the long haul or most players will never give you a chance.

Multiplayer-only action games are either thriving or dead. There is no middle ground.

This goes double for games that won't let you host your own goddamn servers, since those can at least maintain small communities of dedicated weirdos. Presumably someone out there is still arranging Ricochet matches.
