This is insane pressure on Biden to step down. I hope it gets through to him. I dread to think of what happens with such division in the party going into the nomination process.

Depends:

  • Biden on the ballot? We have a chance, albeit slim thanks to all the hand-wringing making people stay home (remember, that's what the cons want)

  • Biden off the ballot? FAILED EVERY OTHER TIME, SO WHAT'RE WE THINKING?!?

Perfect doesn't exist except in the doubts of Good Enough.

I would not call it “insane” pressure.

Prominent sitting congressmembers publicly asking for the presumptive nominee and incumbent president to step down is... very outside of the norm. It is an incredible and unprecedented pressure.

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The norm sucks. The fucking norm got us into this mess by discouraging people from primarying a sitting president. If we'd had a robust primary we'd either be fully on board with Biden or we'd have dropped him already.

Fuck norm. He was like the worst character on Cheers.

Ha, I wanted a Cheers reference and so I dropped that one but it also did cause me pain. Norm is exceedingly chill.

Not enough hyperbole dude. I don't have time to do the research, but its not clear to me that a situation where the incumbent president and presumptive nominee is being asked to step down by effectively ALL of the rest of party leadership, with only the fringe block (progressives) maintaining support.

I think i can recall a vaguely similar situation with maybe Grover Cleveland and the mugwumps? And iirc that was all about currency (gold vs silver vs fiat vs a historical aside: land based currency; worth reading on)..

Who’ll be her vp

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Good. Biden needs to fuck off into the sunset.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I, for one, am calling on Rep Schiff to withdraw from Congress.

Shoe's on the other foot, bitch.

He can fucking quit if he wants to doom democracy by foolishly switching candidates when that's never worked ever.

[–] oyo@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago

And in those few other cases, have both candidates ever been so overwhelmingly unpopular?

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I can't wait to hear about how Adam Schiff is now a trumpet...

It seems like the only people left explicitly supporting Biden, are the people Biden has appointed to run the DNC...

And I'm sure it's a total coincidence that if a Dem besides Biden wins, they'd get to replace the DNC chair and all the other seat Biden got to appoint in 2020...

But if Biden runs and loses they maintain control of the party again for next election.

(...) for next election.

Oh boy have they got a lesson coming.

Kinzinger

You just are not going to get any modern Republicans to cross the line. There is no point in catering or marketing to them. The same is true with Democrats. Both parties "identifies as" bases are immobile.
