I cannot possibly imagine not doing this job in a fully sealed deep diving suit with a hepa filter and chainmail from head to toe.

Silicosis is a fucking nightmare on par with mesothelioma and emphysema.

[–] NegativeInf@lemmy.world 34 points 4 months ago

Honestly, this is actually one of the times where the satirical word pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is actually applicable!?

Yeah, the N95's are a good step, but probably not enough. Some people weren't wearing masks at all.

Also, It didn't look like any of the saws had good safety stops, the angle-grinders were taped down, and the guy cutting the balls seemed to be really close to getting a (gloved) hand sucked into the saw.

Definitely not the worst safety, but people are definitely getting hurt at this job site. And this is what they considered good enough to show on Youtube, so probably worse than we think...

Very cool balls though.

… what's the chainmail protecting against?

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Puncturing the diving suit, and also psychological reassurance being near that massive saw.

[–] custard_swollower@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Chainmail does not secure against punctures, only cuts.

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Anecdotal but a kitchen I worked at used it for shucking oysters, i.e. specifically to prevent puncture of skin.

[–] dactylotheca@suppo.fi 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

They meant puncture as in stabbing the chainmail with a pointy thing vs cutting it. They do offer some protection but it's easier to get through; more force in a smaller area

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That makes sense. I suppose that’s what plate was for?

[–] dactylotheca@suppo.fi 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Yeah it's all about tradeoffs, really. Plate's great but it does weigh and cost more so you wouldn't see as much of it in the field – although it's not nearly as clunky as popularly portrayed because you had to be able to fight in that thing. A lot of the time throwing some mail and a gambeson on a peasant is Good Enough™ for the mass of your army

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 2 points 4 months ago

I recall a tour guide at the armory museum in Boston describing accounts of (presumably well-to-do) armor wearers showing off their suits’ mobility by doing cartwheels. Still difficult to imagine, but yeah fighting in clunky armor sounds like it could easily be more dangerous than none at all.

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Depends on the mass of the projectile and the size and material of the rings of the mail.

[–] nicknonya@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 4 months ago

errant knights

[–] Gigasser@lemmy.world 25 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Does volcanic glass really look like that? Perhaps it's just glass slag from a factory.

[–] Plum@lemmy.world 28 points 4 months ago
[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

The only type of (natural) volcanic glass found in appreciable quantities is obsidian. I don't know of any others at all.

Thumbnail looks dope, here’s the URL without Google’s shady little tracker if you wanna edit it in:

Edit: this is so cool

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Misleading title, but fascinating video nonetheless.

[–] gibmiser@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I wasn't sure if this was a community that removes posts if you change the title.

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Understandable, I would have left the original title intact as well. A real enjoyable video, thanks for posting.

[–] Skanky@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago

My lungs itched after watching that video.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 6 points 4 months ago

Why do we need crystal balls?

Not making a future pun.

[–] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

A de-gloving injury just waiting to happen.

[–] Etterra@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Okay NGL, I would love to have blood red gravel to decorate... Something. If I owned property.

[–] aodhsishaj@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Blood red gravel that draws red blood....Doom Guy vibes in landscaping

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

... Huh? No, we don't have that, but we do have "oh shit!" as in "Oh shit I lost another finger!"

[–] Waraugh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 months ago

Do they have an Etsy?

[–] masquenox@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

There must be easier (and safer) ways to make novelty bowling balls.
