Comments are back, and even comment replies! This is huge!

[–] rbn@sopuli.xyz 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Agreed! Comments on comments were the last reason I sometimes went back to the original YouTube app!

Yup, now the only reason for me to occasionally switch to the actual YouTube page is to give videos likes and subscribes (that actually count for the person and aren't just bookmarks for myself)

Aww, the broken comments were my favorite feature

[–] agrammatic@feddit.de 6 points 6 months ago

Truly an xkcd #1172 situation.

Finally! I switched to PipePipe before this update, since it somehow had the comments working.

I throught the app was being rewritten and that this version was only gonna receive fixes until the rewrite is over.

I thought the app was being rewritten and that this version was only gonna receive fixes until the rewrite is over.

That's correct. The "New" and "Improved" changes are mostly from pull requests that were opened before the rewrite announcement, or are important quality of life improvements.

NewPipe supports PeerTube and others, give it a try to lower your dependency on YouTube!

Why fdroid build is outdated?

[–] lemmyreader@lemmy.ml 14 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

NewPipe has their own F-Droid repository for users who want faster updates. https://newpipe.net/FAQ/tutorials/install-add-fdroid-repo/

If that is too much hassle then you can install Droidify https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.looker.droidify and simply click on NewPipe in the repository settings of Droidify but beware that Droidify does enable the IzzyOnDroid repo by default.

What is Izzydroid and why is it considered bad?

[–] toothbrush@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 6 months ago

IzzyOnDroid gets their packages by searching for Apks on github in a semi-automated manner and does basically no filtering on its own, so there may be low quality or malicious apps on there.

IzzyOnDroid is a popular F-Droid repository. It is not bad at all, but if you don't realize that it gets enabled by default in Droidify you will have a lot more "duplicate" apps to choose from to install, and some people like myself prefer to only use apps from the main F-Droid repo when they can.

[–] mp3@lemmy.ca 7 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

F-Droid always lag behind a bit since it needs to build all the apps they distribute from source in their CI servers.

Your question has been mostly answered, though if you're wondering why v0.26.0 is missing as well, it's because of some issues with reproducible builds that should hopefully have been resolved now.

Does anyone know if there is a way to do one-time donations to Newpipe without signing up for Libera Pay? E.g. did the team publish their IBAN or PayPal account?

[–] Crotaro@beehaw.org 4 points 6 months ago

I'd love to know that, too. I understand craving the security of a monthly "paycheck", but I avoid subscriptions whenever possible because all those individual "Giving that cause/software/YouTuber 2€ per month is barely noticeable" do become noticeable at some critical mass

[–] yessikg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 months ago

You can do one-time donations in libera pay, just select the manual donation renewal reminder option

Hopefully Tubular updates soon too
