If that blond kid can manage to eat all that ice cream by himself, he deserves the tummy ache he's bound to get.

If we can't all be at the top, then we should drag everyone down to the bottom instead. I mean fair is fair.

Counterpoint: don't drag everyone to the bottom; make the bottom not be a horrible struggle for survival. Make it decent and cover basic survival needs. There will still be unfairness and inequality, but more on the level of luxury than survival.

Way easier to drag everyone down. It's where the "crab mentality" comes from.

[–] frezik@midwest.social 2 points 9 months ago

My crab claws can't reach the billionaire crab.

Wait 'til you see us dance.

"Sirens of Titan" by Kurt Vonnegut talks about this. There is a group that tries to even out natural unfairness with self imposed handicaps. People with great eyesight wear glasses that make them blinder, people with naturally athletic builds tie weights to themselves to slow their movement and so on.

Is that the one where they start flying and someone shoots them with rocket launchers?

Also a Stanislaw Lem novel about a similar premise.

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

Had to check the spelling of Stanislaus National Forest

Never saw the naturalistic fallacy so well illustrated! Very nice!

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

The "unjust world, but actually it's fine" fallacy.

[–] lugal@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago

That's kind of a subset. The naturalistic fallacy is confusing the "is" for a "should be", observation with normativity

There's for sure lots of talent in sports but nobody is born strong. Building muscle requires discipline.

You can’t just be born good looking to be showered with money.

Gotta say a couple lines on TV or put up with a rich old spouse or something.

If only moms ran the economy.

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Be the mom you want to see in the world.

But with guillotines instead of grounding.

Remember to keep the contact surfaces sanded and waxed for smooth slicing

Mom says it's my turn with the capital!

Fair <> Just <> Equitable

Don’t take this comic as a lesson on fairness, it isn’t.

"And if you're gonna keep talking, I want them both."

We also don't want people to waste whatever luck give them.
The point is not about removing the gift from gifted people, the point is making sure anyone, regardless of luck, can have a good life.
That's the kind of fairness we want.
